There is a wonderful story about a young girl who had no family and no one to love her.
One day, feeling very sad and lonely, she was walking through a grassland     she noticed a small butterfly caught in a thorn (荆棘) bush. The young girl carefully released the butterfly. Instead of    (fly)away, the little butterfly changed into     beautiful fairy(仙女).
“For your wonderful kindness,” the good fairy said to the girl, “I will give you any wish        can help you get what you want.” The little girl thought      a moment and then replied, “I want to be happy.” The fairy leaned toward her, whispered in her ear and then disappeared.
As the little girl grew up, there was no one in the land      (happy) than her. Everyone asked her about the secret of happiness .She would only smile and answer, “The secret of     happiness is that I listened to a good fairy when I was a little girl.”
When she     (die), the neighbors all gathered around her, fearing that her      (believe) secret of happiness would die with her. “Tell us, please,” they begged, “Tell us      the good fairy said.” The lovely old woman simply smiled and said, “She told me that everyone, no matter how secure they seemed, no matter how old or young, how rich or poor, had need of me!”

Life gets noisier every day and very few people can be free from noise of some sort or another. It doesn’t matter   you live — in the middle of a modern city, or a faraway village — the chances    you will be disturbed by jet airplanes, transistor radios, oil-powered engines, etc, are almost everywhere. We seem    (get) used to noise, too. Some people feel quite lonely    background music while they are working.
Scientific tests have shown that total silence can be very    (frighten) experience for human beings.    , some people enjoy listening to pop music which is very loud, and this can do harm to    eardrums (耳鼓). The noise level in some disco is far above the usual safetylevel for heavy industrial areas.
One recent report about noise and concentration     (suggest) that although a lot of people say that any noise disturbs their concentration,     really affects their ability to concentrate is a change in the level of noise. It goes on to say that a background noise,     doesn’t change too much (music, for example), may even help people to concentrate.

Directions: Complete the following passage by filling in each blank with one word that best fits the context.
When kids in parts of the world want to play, they often make soccer balls out of trash tied together with string. “     the areas used for playing fields are often rough and rocky, millions of real balls go flat (变瘪)       24 hours,” says Tim Jahnigen, a California businessman. Determined to solve this problem,        created an indestructible ball called the One World Futbol.
The ball is made of     special material, ethylene-vinyl acetate foam. It’s lightweight, it’s flexible, and—   important—it holds its shape.
The One World Futbol needs no pump       won’t wear out, even on rough surfaces. When tested,     withstood (经受住) being crushed by a car, and even being chewed on by a lion.
Although it costs more to produce      a typical soccer ball, Jahnigen estimates the One World Futbol can last 30 years. So far, it’s been given to kids in 143 countries.  (154 words)

When you read a story in English, do you read it for the story         for the English? This is a question         is not so           (fool) as itmay seem, for I findthat many students of English payfar more attention to the story than to the English. For example, they care for           the mystery(谜) in the story           (solve), but do not remember a singlesentence in the story and cannot tellwhat preposition(介词) is used before            certain wordin the speech of a certain character.
Of course, if you want to know the story only, you need not bother (麻烦) about the language. But a student of English is different          a student of stories or what is called the general reader. As you may also have learnedfrom the above, you ought to read not only very carefully but also aloud            you learn the passage by heart and can reciteit as if it          (be) your own. On            hand, this will teach you many usefulwords and phrases; on the other hand, it will help you to avoid many errors and faults in expression.
