Was Princess Diana murdered? The verdict(判决) is no. according to an inquiry(调查) held into the cause of her death over the last six months.
The big question was whether the deaths of Diana and her boyfriend Dodi A1 Fayed in a deadly car crash in 1997 had been accidental, or whether there was some kind of conspiracy(阴谋) to have them killed.
Dodi’s father Mohamed A1 Fayed, owner of London’s world-famous department store Harrods, has insisted for the last decade that the pair were murdered by spies of the British state who did not want them to marry. But his theories now look to have been blown out of the water. The court found that Princess Diana and her boyfriend were not murdered but killed due to the “gross, carelessness” of her driver and the paparazzi(偷拍的摄影记者). Her driver was drunk at the time of the crash and the paparazzi had been running after their car.
So is this the end of the Diana story? British taxpayers may hope so. The inquiry has cost them about £10m (140m RMB). “Thank God it’s over”, was the headline in The Guardian newspaper. UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown said it was time to “draw a line” under the death of the Princess. But Mohamed AI Fayed has refused to accept the judgment. He says the result will come as a “blow” to millions of his supporters around the world, and has not ruled out starting another investigation.
Whatever happens, next, the special place Princess Diana has in the hearts of people around the world is not likely to be forgotten.

As the proverb says,“No one knows the value of health until he loses it.”In other words, nothing is more valuable than health.
It is clear that health is the foundation(基础) of one's future success. If you become sick, it is scarcely possible to pursue(从事) your career effectively, much less make your dreams come true. On the other hand, if you are strong, you can go all out to overcome the obstacles(障碍) that lie ahead of you.
Health is the resource of our energy. What should we do to maintain(保持) our health? First we should exercise every day to strengthen our muscles. Second, we might as well keep good hours. If we get up early, we can breathe fresh air and see the sunrise. This habit can do wonders for our outlook on life. Third, there is a proverb that says,“Prevention is better than cure.”If you pay close attention to your health, you can avoid getting sick, or at least cure yourself of a disease while it is still in its beginning stage.
In conclusion, health is more important than wealth. Those who are rich but poor in health are no more fortunate than those who are poor, and healthy in body. If you want your wish to come true, health is the most important component(组成部分) of your success.

Even though he has been caught, the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is still causing trouble. His arrest has thrown up as many questions as it has answers. Top of the list is what should happen to Saddam now, closely followed by calls for information from him about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction(大规模杀伤性武器). He is currently being held by American troops at a secret place. The US says he will stand trial(审判) for his cruel actions during his years in power. This is likely to take place at a court set up two weeks ago by the US-backed Iraqi Governing Council(伊拉克临管会). The council's president Abdul Azizal-Hakim has warned Saddam could be executed(处死) if found guilty by the court. And the US supports this.“I think he ought to receive the worst punishment for what he has done to his people,”said US President George W. Bush, without directly stating that Saddam should be put to death. However, many nations, including Saddam's long time enemy Iran, believe he would receive a fairer trial in an international court. Even Britain, America's closest supporter, said it would not take part in any trial that could lead to Saddam's execution. The UN Security Council(联合国安理会) has yet to make its position clear. But UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan did say that“the UN does not support a death penalty.”Besides waiting for a trial of Saddam, the world wants to see if the US and Britain can find the banned weapons they gave as the reason for the war in Iraq. Asked if Saddam's capture could lead to a breakthrough in the hunt for the weapons of mass destruction, British Prime Minister Tony Blair said,“there's obvious possibility there. But I think we should carry on what we're doing in Iraq”.

52.Tony Blair's words implies that _____.
A.he is not sure whether they can find the weapons B.Britain will not take part in trial
C. Both A and B D. Neither A nor B
Young Japanese people are evolving a new lifestyle for the 21st century based on the cell phones that few are now able to live without.
While about one-third of Japanese primary school students aged 7-12 use cell phones, by the time they get to high school, that figure has shot up to 96 percent, according to a government survey released last month. They are using their phones to read books, listen to music, chat with friends and surf the Internet -- an average of 124 minutes a day for high school girls and 92 minutes for boys.
While the wired world they now inhabit holds enormous advantages for learning and communicating, it also brings a downside, say experts who point to a rise in cyber-bullying and a growing inability among teenagers to deal with other people face to face. "Kids say what's most important to them, next to their own lives, is their cell phone," said Masashi Yasukawa. "It's a very scary world," he said. "As they reveal personal information about themselves, children can become prey (猎物) of adults who cheat or are sexually attracted to children. "
Education professor Tetsuro Saito said a survey of 1,600 middle school students aged around 14 found that most middle school cell phone users rarely used their phones to talk. Children seemed to want the security of communicating with someone, without the bother of dealing with a real person.
"Communication ability is bound to decline as cell phones and other devices are now getting between people," he said. Tomomi, 18, said: "I send some 20 emails a day. There are people I don't talk with -- even if I see them at school, I just exchange mail with them. I guess we're connected only by a machine."
Saito's survey found that students can also use their cell phones as an emotional crutch (拐杖) , and the more problems they have at home, the more dependent they seem to become on their phones. More than 60 percent of students who said they do not enjoy being with their families send 20 or more emails a day, compared with 35 percent of those happy with their families.
And even if cell phones can bring comfort, it can come at a terrible cost.

Eleven leatherback turtles(凌皮龟) are swimming across the Pacific Ocean to the Galapagos Islands in a "race" that will be tracked online to draw attention to the serious situation of the endangered creatures.
The turtles have been attached with satellite communication devices that give their positions, as they head South from their nesting sites on Costa Rica' s Playa Grande beach to their feeding grounds near the Galapagos, about 1,500km away.
Online participants can choose a turtle and track its course at http://www.great turtlerace.com. The winner will be the one that travels furthest in two weeks of swimming.
There is no prize for the winner of the race, aimed at highlighting the dangers to a creature that has graced (美化) the oceans for 100 million years.
Environmentalists say 95 percent of leatherbacks in the Pacific Ocean have vanished in the last 20 years due to human activity like fishing, poaching(偷猎) of their eggs and building near their nests.
Thousands of leatherbacks nested at Playa Grande 10 years ago, but the number has dropped to below 100 in the last 5 years.
The leatherback race will not be live because the turtles left Costa Rica at different times. Instead, environmentalist group Conservation International will provide a day-to-day showing of the first 14 days of their journeys simultaneously as if they were racing.
The event will raise funds to protect Playa Grande. It is being organized by groups such as Conservation International and Costa Rica' s Environment Ministry.

After blogging regularly for two months, people felt they had better social support and friendship networks than those who didn’t blog. Blogging can help you feel less isolated, more connected to a community and more satisfied with your friendships. Both online and face-to-face, a new Australian research has found
Researchers James Baker and Professor Susan Moore from Swinburne have written two papers investigating the psychological benefits of blogging-regularly updating personal web pages with information that invites others to comment.
The first, published in the latest issue of the journal CyberPsychology and Behaviour. compares the mental health of people intending to blog with that of people not planning to blog. Moore says the researchers messaged 600 MySpace users personally and directed them to an online survey. A total of 134 completed the questionnaire. 84 intended to blog and 50 didn’t.
“We found potential bloggers were less satisfied with their friendships and they felt less socially integrated; they didn’t feet as much part of a community as the people who weren’t interested in blogging …”Moore says. “It was as if they were saying ‘I’m going to do this blogging and it’s going to help me’.”
And it seemed to do the trick, as the researchers’ second study shows. This study which is yet to be published, was conducted two months later. The researchers sent out questionnaires(调查问卷)to the same group of MySpace users, this time 59 responded Bloggers reported a greater sense of belonging to a group of like-minded people and feeling more confident because they could rely on others for help. All respondents, whether or not they blogged, reported feeling less anxious, depressed and stressed after two months of online social networking.
“So going onto MySpace had lifted the mood of all participants in some way,” Moore says. “Maybe they’d just made more social connections.”
Moore acknowledges this is early research and hopes to follow a larger group of people for a longer period time to test some of the research findings.

A. online social networking can do people good
B. only bloggers benefit from online social networking
C. not many potential bloggers became real bloggers
D. not all bloggers found the help they needed
70. The main purpose of people going onto MySpace is probably to _______.

One of the founding fathers of the internet has predicted the end of traditional television. Vint Serf, who helped to build the internet while working as a researcher in America, said that television was approaching its “iPod moment.”
In the same way that people now download their favorite music onto their iPods, he said that viewers would soon be downloading most of their favorite programmers onto their computers. “85 percent of all video we watch is pre-recorded, so you can set your system to download it at any time,”said Mr. Cerf, who is now the vice-president of Goggle.
“You’re still going to need live television for certain things--like news, sporting events and emergencies--but increasingly it will be almost like iPod, where you download content to look at later.”
Although television-on-demand has not yet become a main activity in the UK, the BBC, 1TV and Channel 4 have all invested a lot of money in technology which Mr. Cerf think will enable viewers to watch their favorite shows on their computers.
However, some critics(批评家)have warned that the Internet will collapse(崩溃)if millions of people try to download programmers at the same time.
Over the next four years, scientists think the number of videos watched over the Internet will double, with people moving from short chips to hour-long programmes.
Broadband companies claim that the service will cause“traffic jams”,which will cost millions of pounds to solve. Mr. Cerf dismissed these warnings, saying that critics had predicted 20 years ago that the net would collapse when people all around the world started to use it at the same time, “We’re far from exhausting (用尽)the capacity,” he said.“I want every one of the six billion people in the planet to be able to connect to the Internet.”

On some level, I always knew that I wanted to be a doctor--at least from the age of eight or ten years old, anyway.
Although my father wasn’t a doctor, he made his own brand of “house calls. I followed him as he brought a plate of my mother’s home cooking to an elderly man named Frank on all major holidays and when Frank was sick. As far as I know, their only connection was that Frank was an occasional customer at Dad’s small gas station. Frank’s home was a two-room house on the rough side of town with an old front porch(门廊) where you could fall if you weren’t careful. Frank had no relatives and as far as I could tell, no other visitors either. Through his attitude of caring, my father was teaching me to be a doctor, although neither of us knew it at the time.
When I was 13, my father developed lung cancer. He brought home a diagram the doctor had drawn showing where his cancer was and told me that he was going to die. He asked me to take care of my mother when he was gone. I was an only child. He said he loved me on the night when he died.
When you’re 13 and your father dies, you have some choices to make. You can use the situation as an excuse for letting your actions and grades go down, or you can honor his memory and try to do something positive with yourself. I focused my energy on my schoolwork and my goal of becoming a doctor.
56. What was the father’s“own brand of ‘house calls’”?

A. The author began to think seriously about his career.
B. The author was too sorrowful to go on studying.
C. The author used the situation as an excuse to quit school.
D. The author worked harder to achieve his goal of becoming a doctor.
59. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

B. In return for Father's help, Frank usually came up at his gas station.
C. The author had no sisters or brothers.
D. The author was deeply influenced by Father's doctor who treated his cancer.

Young drivers are over-represented in alcohol--related driving accidents. In recent years, people aged 16 to 24 were involved in 28 percent of all alcohol--related driving accidents, although they make up only 14% of the U. S. population. Young people are also over--represented in drinking driver injuries and deaths. Even when their blood alcohol contents (BACs) are not high, young drinkers are involved in driving accidents at higher rates than older drivers with similar BACs.
Fortunately, driving accidents have been declining among young people, just as they have among the general population. And deaths associated with young drinking drivers (those 16 to 24 years of age) are down, having dropped 47% in a recent 15--year period.
In contrast to popular belief, drinking among young people is dropping and has been doing so for many years. For example, statistics demonstrate that within a period of about 20 years, the proportion of American high school seniors who have ever consumed alcohol is down 13%;the proportion of those who have consumed alcohol within the previous year is down 15%.
Exaggerating the degree of drinking problems of young people may create an unexpected problem. When young people go to college falsely believing that most others are drinking heavily, then they may try to follow suit. Thus, those who exaggerate the problem of alcohol abuse actually contribute to the problem and make it worse. However, when students find out that most others don’t drink as much as they incorrectly believed, they are very likely to drink less and even give up. So, honest accuracy rather than dishonest exaggeration is the most effective way to reduce alcohol abuse and the problems it causes.
60. We can learn from the first paragraph that ____.
A. in the U. S. people aged 16 to 24 caused half of the alcohol--related driving accidents
B. young drinkers are more likely to cause accidents than adult drinkers
C. young drinkers are able to keep calm when their BACs are not high
D. people aged 16 to 24 make up a quarter of the U. S. population
61. It can be inferred from Para. 3 that ____.
A. high school seniors turn to alcohol to get rid of their pressure
B. it’s a fact that young people are drinking more nowadays
C. the number of high school students in the U. S is dropping
D. most people believe more and more young people are becoming addicted to drinking
62. The underlined phrase “follow suit” in the last paragraph means ____.
A. stop drinking

C. start drinking
D. hate what others do
63. Which of the following statements does the author agree to?

B. Many young people in the U. S. are acting totally irresponsibly.
C. The drinking problems of young people are turning for the better.
D. Students will stop drinking if they believe most others are drinking heavily.

On the day of my wedding, mum cried as if we would never meet again, while dad went out with a nasal sound.
From very young, I heard him saying, “Where have you been?” “When do you go home?” “Did you get oil for your car?” “No, I don’t agree.” Dad really knows nothing about showing love. Unless...

It was a sunny summer day last year when I got the news that I was admitted by the university.
Soon the news spread all over the village. Hearing the news, my parents were more than(不止) happy: big smiles formed on their faces. But behind their happiness and pride for my success, I noticed my parents worries about the heavy financial burden on their shoulders. I kept being calm.
In order to prepare for my study expenses, my parents worked hard day after day all that summer. And the day finally came when I had to go to school which was far away from my hometown. I still remember it was in the morning that we arrived at the bus station. My parents had helped me get everything ready. It was so hot that day: the scorching sun baked the ground dry. The heated air was filled with the crowds’ noise and all kinds of smells coming from the station. Sweat streamed down my parents’face. I took my seat on the 11 AM bus and looked at my parents through the window, waiting for the bus to start. Two minutes to 11:00! My heart leapt (强烈跳动). I suddenly recalled all the efforts they made for me, all the energy and all the sweat they spent on me. They were so selfless! I almost burst into tears! While I kept my tears back, I turned around, for I didn’t want them to see me crying…
The last moment came. The bus started and was moving further away from my parents. They waved at me and I turned toward them, watching their shadows disappearing gradually into the sea of people. I, an 18-year-old girl, who had never left my hometown, began my long trip to my school.
I didn’t know what would the future be, but I knew that I would have a long way to go, and I believe I could be brave enough to take up all the challenges in my future life with my family’s love, their wordless and selfless love.
I will be always thankful for this love.

I sit at my kitchen table, while my daughter, Anna, sits next to my mother. On the wall hangs a photo of my father.
“When is Rick going to be here?” My mother asks, referring to my husband.
“I don’t know, Mom,” I answer patiently. “He’ll be here for dinner.”
I sigh and get up from the table. This is at least the tenth time she has asked that question.
While my mother and daughter play, I busy myself making a salad.
“Don't put in any onions,” Mom says. “You know how Daddy hates onion.”
“Yes, Mom,” I answer.
I scrub(洗擦) off a carrot and chop it into bite-size pieces.
“Don't put any onions in the salad,” she reminds me. “You know how Daddy hates onion.”
This time I can’t answer.
My mother had been beautiful. She still is. In fact, my mother is still everything she has
been, just a bit forgetful.
I cut off the end of the cucumber and rub it to take away the bitterness. Cut and rub. This is a trick I have learned from my mother, along with a trillion other things: cooking, sewing,
dating, laughing, thinking. I learned how to grow up.
And I learned that when my mother was around, I never had to be afraid. So why am I afraid now?
I study my mother's hands. Her nails are no longer a bright red, but painted a light pink.。Almost no color at all. And as I stare at them, I realize I am feeling them as they shaped my
youth. Hands that packed a thousand lunches and wiped a million tears off my cheeks.
Now my hands have grown into those of my mother's. Hands that have cooked uneaten
meals, held my own daughter's frightened fingers on the first day of school and dried tears
off her face.
I grow lighthearted. I can feel my mother kiss me goodnight, check to see if the window is
locked, then blow another kiss from the doorway. Then I am my mother, blowing that same
kiss to Anna.

Someday my daughter will be standing in my place, and I will rest where my mother now sits.
Will I remember then how it felt to be both mother and daughter? Will I ask the same
question too many times?

Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers advised," Barbara, be enthusiastic (热情的) ! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience. "How right they were!
"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It isthe paste that helps you hang on there, then the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers, "I can do it!" When others shout, "No, you can't!" It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock, a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted, yet she didn't stop working on her experiments. Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.
We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder and it is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such youthful air, whatever their age. At 90, Cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes. An author and poet Samuel Ulman once wrote," Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. "
Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money or title or power. Patricia Mellrath, retired director of the Missouri Repertory Theater in Kansas City, was once asked where she got her enthusiasm. She replied, "My father, a lawyer, long ago told me, 'I never made a dime until I stopped working for money.' "
If we can't do what we love as a full-time career, we can as a hobby. Elizabeth Layton of Wellsville Kan, was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended periods of depression that had troubled her for at least 30 years, and the quality of her work led one critic to say, "I am tempted to call Layton a genius. "
We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after "what-can-be". We need to live each moment whole-heartedly, with all our senses--finding pleasure in the sweet smell of a back-yard garden, the simple picture of a six-year-old, the beauty of a rainbow.

One day the employees of a large company in St Louis, Missouri returned from their lunch break and were greeted with a sign on the front door. The sign said: "Yesterday the person who has been hindering ((阻碍) your growth in this company passed away. We invite you to join the funeral (葬礼) in the room that has been prepared in the gym."
At first everyone was sad to hear that one of their colleagues had died, but after a while they started getting curious about who this person might be.
The excitement grew as the employees arrived at the gym to pay their last respects. Everyone wondered: "Who is this person that was hindering my progress? Well, at least he's no longer here."
One by one the employees got closer to the coffin (棺材) and when they looked inside it they became speechless. They stood over the coffin, shocked and in silence, as if someone had touched the deepest part of their soul.
There was a mirror inside the coffin: Everyone who looked inside it could see himself. There was also a sign next to the mirror that said: "There is only one person who can set limits to your growth: it is YOU."
You are the only person who can revolutionize (彻底改变) your life. You are the only person who can influence your happiness, your realization and your success. You are the only person who can help yourself.
