(2013·福建卷)第二节 完形填空
We have been driving in fog all morning, but the fog is lifting now. The little seaside villages are       , one by one. "There is my grandmother's house," I say,       across the bay to a shabby old house.
I am in Nova Scotia on a pilgrimage (朝圣) with Lise, my granddaughter, seeking roots for her, retracing (追溯)        memory for me. Lise was one of the mobile children,        from house to house in childhood. She longs for a sense of        , and so we have come to Nova Scotia where my husband and I were born and where our ancestors        for 200 years.
We soon        by the house and I tell her what it was like here, the memories        back, swift as the tide (潮水).
Suddenly, I long to walk again in the        where I was once so gloriously a child. It still        a member of the family, but has not been lived in for a while. We cannot go into the house, but I can still walk        the rooms in memory. Here, my mother        in her bedroom window and wrote in her diary. I can still see the enthusiastic family        into and out of the house. I could never have enough of being        them. However, that was long after those childhood days. Lise        attentively as I talk and then says, " So this is where I        ; where I belong. "
She has        her roots. To know where I come from is one of the great longings of the human        To be rooted is "to have an origin". We need        origin. Looking backward, we discover what is unique in us; learn the        of "I". We must all go home again—in reality or memory.

My friend Tom came across an accident when driving in darkness. His legs were so hurt that he couldn’t move. What was            was that he found himself unable to ask for help—his mobile phone went out of        as a result of exhausted battery. Nothing could be done but           in the cold wilderness. It was 8 hours later that day broke and then the        of the rescue team.
It is almost           that he could stand the horror in the darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his        . “First of all I checked my    conditions and found myself not in danger. As there was no         to call for help, I leaned(斜靠)back in my seat trying my best to keep the wound from        . In this way I dozed(打盹)off.”
His story put an end to my regret for the          of an exploration that happened last year. Finally, they fell dead in fear and exhaustion. According to the        team that found them, the place where they got lost was only about 10 meters away from the        of the cave. Don’t you think that you can compare it with        itself? When you meet with difficulties in life, you are lost in darkness. Focus that it’s unclear to you yet and you needn’t put up struggle      . It seems to be a negative attitude,      a person who can do so must have foresight as well as a great         in the first place.

There are going to be moments in life when you must make very important decisions. You will find many people       to offer you advice if you ask for it (and even if you don’t), but always remember that the life you      is yours and nobody else’s. It’s important to decide for yourself what’s important to you and what you want before you       others. Because while there will be times       outside advice proves wise, there will be at least as many times when it proves completely      . The only way to really evaluate other folks’ advice is to first learn everything that you can about whatever challenge you are      . Once you’ve done that, in most cases you should be able to make a wise decision       anyway.
You were       with the ability to decide what is and what isn’t in your best interest. Most of the time, you will make the right decision and       the appropriate action, and in thinking for yourself, you will become far more successful than if you had gone against your own      .
Early on in my investment career, I made the mistake of       a few important business decisions on colleagues’ opinions instead of conducting the       necessary to make a wise decision. It wasn’t due to       on my part; no one could ever accuse me of that. But, being       to Wall Street, I intended to suppose that my more senior       knew more than I did, and so I       too much significance to their opinions.
You know what happened? Each of those investments ended in      . Eventually I stopped allowing myself to be influenced by       and began doing the work myself and making my own decisions. It took me until I was almost 30 years old to       this—it’s never too late for a person to change his approach both to       and to life.

A couple were having a wedding. All of their friends and family came to see the lovely     and all had a wonderful time. The bride was       in her white wedding gown and the groom was very handsome. Everyone could tell that the love they had for each other was true.
A few months later, the wife came to the husband with a     , “Each of us will write a list of things we find a bit     with the other person. Then, we can talk about how we can     them and make our lives happier.” The husband agreed. So they went to think of the things that annoyed them about the other.
The next morning, at the breakfast table, they decided they would go over their    .
“I’ll start,” said the wife. She took out her list. It had many items on it, enough to fill three pages. In fact, as she started reading the list of the little annoyances, she noticed that tears were starting to appear in her husband's eyes.
“What’s wrong?” she asked. “Nothing.” the husband replied,“    reading your list.”
The wife continued to read until she had read all three     to her husband.
“Now, it’s your turn and then we’ll talk about the things on both of our lists.” she said happily.
the husband stated,“I don’t have anything on my list. I think you are     the way that you are. I don’t want you to change anything for me.”
The wife     by his honesty and the depth of his love for her and his acceptance of her, turned her head and wept.
In life, there are enough times when we are disappointed, depressed and annoyed. We don’t really have to go looking for them. We have a wonderful world that is full of beauty, light and promise. Why waste time seeking the bad, disappointing or annoying when we can look around us, and see the      things before us?

In 1972, I returned to Miami Beach High School to speak to the drama class. Afterward I asked the drama teacher        any of my English teachers are still there. Irene Roberts, he tells me, is in the class         down the hall.
I was no one special in Miss Roberts’ class — just another student who did okay work. I don’t recall any one special bit of wisdom she passed on. Yet I cannot forget her         for language, for ideas and for her students. I         now, many years later, that she is the perfect example of a         teacher. I’d like to say something to her, I say, but I don’t want to         her from a class. Nonsense, he says, she’ll be         to see you.
The drama teacher        Miss Roberts into the hallway where stands this 32-year-old man she last saw at 18. “I’m Mark Medoff,” I tell her. “You were my 12th-grade English teacher in 1958.” She        her head to one side and looks at me, as if this angle might remember me in her        . And then, though armed with a message I want to         in many words, I can’t think up anything more memorable than this: “I want you to know,” I say, “you were         to me.”
And there in the hallway, this lovely woman, now nearing         age, this teacher who doesn’t remember me, begins to weep; and she encircles me in her arms.
this moment, I begin to sense that everything I will ever know, everything I will ever pass to my students, is an inseparable part of a legacy(遗产) of our ancestors.
Irene Roberts holds me         in her arms and through her tears whispers         my cheek, “Thank you.” And then, with the briefest of looks into my forgotten face, she          back into her classroom,         to what she has done thousands of days through all the years of my        .
On reflection, maybe those were,        , just the right words to say to Irene Roberts. Maybe they are the very words I would like to speak to all those teachers through my life, the very words I would like spoken to me one day by some returning student: “I want you to know you were important to me.”

The airline had        her departure and standing near the security gate, they hugged and he said, “I love you. I wish you enough.” She         said, “Dad, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Dad.” They kissed and she left.
He walked over toward the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see he wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to        him, but he welcomed me in by        , “Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?”

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degrees of health and wealth and the other comforts of life, one becomes happy,         becomes unhappy. This         from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, and events, and the resulting effects upon their minds.
The people who are to be happy         their attention to the conveniences of things, the pleasant parts of conversation, the well-prepared dishes, the goodness of the wines, and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the         things. They are,        , continually unsatisfied. By their words, they complain about the pleasure of society, offend many people, and         themselves disagreeable (不受欢迎的) everywhere. If this turn of mind were founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up         by imitation (模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown         its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it are         its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and         them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of imagination, it has serious         in life, since it causes deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others, nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most         politeness and respect. This         puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at obtaining         advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step         speak a word to favor their hopes. If they cause themselves public objections (反对), no one will         or excuse them, and many         join to criticize their wrongdoings. These people should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing,         worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not,         will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient,         when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.

While attending a conference, I returned to my hotel room late one evening. The overhead light outside my door was burned out and I had        finding the keyhole. When I        to open the door, I        around the wall for a light switch. I found a plate where a switch was        installed... but no switch!
Not discouraged easily, I remembered        a lamp by the bed when I deposited my luggage       in the day. I found the bed in the        and then the lamp, but when I switched it on, nothing      ! I thought that perhaps if I opened the curtains I might be able to use whatever light comes in from the        to find another lamp. So I   my way slowly across the room to the curtains and... no drawstring(拉绳)! I finally stumbled(跌跌撞撞地走)around         I found a desk lamp which actually      !
That evening I discovered in a whole new way just how dark the world        be and how    necessary light is! But even more necessary than        light is the light that shines from people --the light of        and faith. Because, for many people, the world is a dark and        place. For someone today just may be stumbling in discouragement or sadness or fear and in         of some light. So let your light shine. Whatever light you        may be a beacon(灯塔) of hope and encouragement. And if you feel that your light is        a candle in a forest remember -- there isn’t enough darkness in all the world to        the light of one small candle.

My son Tom taught me a beautiful lesson today. He is three years old and it is amazing watching him grow up.
He called out to me today saying, “Papa, sit”. That usually means         everything and going next to him and sitting down to play with him. I did that, as he can be         and will not stop calling out until I         . He was playing with beads (珠子), pushing a string through them, which is a great exercise to help         fine motor skills. Then, after he finished playing with the beads, it was time to put them back in the box that they are stored in. I saw him         pick up each bead, look at it         it were made of chocolate and then placed it into its box.
With over a hundred beads to go, I was getting         . “What a long time it will take! Why cannot he          ten beads in one go and drop them in?” said my anxious mind. I noticed that he did this with as much         as he had while we were playing. I didn’t see any         between his play and his putting away the toy. Obviously he enjoyed both.
Then it suddenly         me that this boy was enjoying the whole         . The journey was his goal. For him the         was in the game and after the game, not just in the fun part. What a great perspective: to live each moment as it is the         moment; to do each task as it is the most awesome task. Nothing else        .
Looking at how         my son was putting beads into the box         me that the process was the goal. The joy of pilgrimage (朝圣) is not in getting there but in every         of the journey.
This is what living in the NOW is all         . Tom, my son, was showing me that it was about thoroughly enjoying every moment with         love and peace.
