I have always been an independent person, but I have come to know that being independent does not mean refusing help. I may still be   16   with asking for help, but I try to accept. Furthermore, I will even   17   help and when my offers are refused, I am   18   willing to walk away. And all these changes came from a disaster on an island.
Sometimes a person’s independence is a   19   of pride, daring, stubbornness and luck. I used to be too   20   since I was little. I was once a traveler who never asked for   21  , choosing instead to struggle with maps and signs until I found my way.
Then one day on the island of Koh Phangan, in Thailand, everything   22  . I was swimming in the ocean with Sean, my fiancé, when he was   23   by a box jellyfish(箱型水母). He   24  within three minutes, 25 years old. Yet when onlookers and travelers asked if I wanted   25  , stubborn pride and force of habit   26   me accepting. But two young Israeli women stayed.   27   my protest(反对), they were with me even when the police tried to cover up the   28   of Sean’s death. It was listed as drunk drowning to avoid hurting the   29   industry. The Israeli women   30   have walked away.   31  , without even telling me, they   32   their schedule rather than leave me behind.
33   I didn’t realize it at that time, I would not have   34   the disaster without these great women. Actually, the person who needs help the most is usually the last person to ask for it. I have learned   35   is better than refusing because it not only helps you walk out of trouble, but also helps you know the real meaning of life.

I said to my son, “Keaton,   39   will pay any more attention to your scar   40   you do. If it does not bother you, it will not bother   41  .” He took my advice to heart and returned to school with his head  42   high — glad he was alive.
43  , everyone has scars and shortcomings. Some of you may spend much time thinking that people would like you better,   44   you looked different, or dressed differently, or could have a different and newer   45  .
But you see, like Keaton’s scar, people will only judge you by your looks, or your   46  , or your car, if you are judging yourself by these same false   47  .

My ears are recently full of joyous remarks from my friends such as, “Oh, Beckham is so handsome, so cool, that I can’t help falling in love with him!” or “What perfect skills he has!” Yeah, I agree 16 some degree, though I sometimes do want to ask them how much they 17 Beckham, apart from his appearance and how much they know about football 18 scoring goals. It seems funny that we are crazy for things, with which we are unfamiliar or 19 we are uncertain, but we all, my friends 20 I, consider this 21 .
We need these pleasures to brighten up our lives. But that doesn’t amount to craziness 22 nonsense. As an old saying 23 :“Don’t judge a book by its cover.” We should not 24 anything from its appearance. We should all know, it is one’s good character and great contribution that 25 one a star and unforgettable. Therefore we’d better say 26 about Beckham’s good looks.
If we close our eyes, 27 in deep thought, we can find that the things 28 us to be in truth happy, sad or moved 29 a clear meaning. If we don’t go deeper and just satisfied with superficial things, 30 we will find that we have not really gained anything 31 our first impression has blinded and misled us, and we’ll remain ignorant 32 we realize that and make some changes.
It is believed that thinking and going deeper than before is sign of great 33 .If one day we are willing to go deeper into everything, no matter how much it 34 us, we will finally prove how much we have grown up, how much more sensible, mature, and intelligent we have 35

No One Is Too Poor to Give
When Teresa,a widow with four young children, saw a notice from her church for all members to gather to deliver presents and food to a  16  family, she took $10 out of her savings jar and bought some ingredients to make three dozen  17  .She got to the church parking lot just in time to join the convoy going to the home that was to  18  the people’s help.
The route was  19  ,and she was astonished when the cars pulled up in front of her house. When the pastor saw her,he said,“ We  20  expected you to join us ,

Although she was   23   being the object of charity,Teresa didn’t want to  24  anyone so she  25  said,“ Well,at least I can share these cookies with our    26  .”

In a world where comparisons happen non-stop, it is difficult to look outside yourself and to ever be   21   with who you are. There’s always someone who’s a bit   22  . The only solution is to reach   23   and measure against what Warren Buffett calls your own inner yardstick. There is no more   24   measure for comparison than who your were yesterday, last week or last decade, when you were at your   25  .
Nothing useful ever comes from comparison to others .Either you see yourself as better than someone and you get   26  , or you see someone else as better than you and you feel like all your hard work is for   27  . It is a fool’s game. Not one of us is exactly   28  . The only direct and honest comparison is   29   yourself. Everything else is apples to oranges.
My opinion is that you are only   30   to compare yourself to someone else if their life  31   is the same as your own. Good luck finding that   32  . And one thing is for sure. No matter how hard you work and how dedicated(埋头苦干的)you are, there will always be someone who can run a little faster, jump a little higher, score a little better or look a little nicer in a swimsuit. And if there’s not, you can   33   someone is coming up fast   34   you. So how can you always win in life? Become your best   35  .
Having an image of your most recent past limits is the perfect thing to   36   you to the next level. If you ran 7 flights of stairs yesterday, then do 8 today. Who   37   if the guy next to you did 15? It doesn’t make a bit of   38  . You are a more   39   person today than you were yesterday. Your own   40   is all you need.

What is it that you love to do but never feel that you get it quite right? Perhaps you don't even try any more because you think what you do is not  36   enough.
Discouragement seems to follow us a good part of the time,   37   whatever it is that we work so hard doing, it seems that there is    38    someone else who can do it much better.
I have always enjoyed music and it is    39    to me that every musician has a    40   of their own. My father__41    several instruments and when he played with others, it was not difficult to ___42   his sound in a group. Whether it was guitar or another instrument, he had his own  43  sound.
I  44   read of a music teacher who commented to a discouraged student, “   45    else can make the sound that you make. The sound that you make may not be the same as someone else's but who is to say which is     46    . ” It is said that, “   47     is in the eye of the beholder(观看者), ” perhaps it could be said that “a delightful sound is in the ear of the    48    . ”
Every person has a different tone of voice that     49   only to them,     50     we all know people with an unforgettable laugh or a way of     51     that is unique to them. It might not be the sound of your music or your voice at all. It      52     be the way you whistle or the sound of your footsteps.
Each person has a(an)   53  on the world in some way. Someone else can do what you do, but they cannot do it   54   the same way that you do it. The next time you feel   55  , remember “Nobody else can make the sound that you make. ”

A man and his girlfriend just got married. The husband didn’t talk much but he was a steady man. The wife was pretty and dreamy.  Everyone could tell that the love they had for each other was true.
A few months later, the wife came to the husband with a proposal, “I read in a magazine about how we can  36   our marriage. Each of us will write a list of the things that we find a bit   37    with the other. Then, we can place them on the table to discuss how we    38    them together and make our life even happier.”
“Are you sure you are about to do this?” the husband sighed and    39   . So each of them went to a(n)   40    room and thought about the things that annoyed them about the other for the rest of the day.
The next morning, at the breakfast table, they decided that they would go over their    41    .
“I’ll start,” offered his wife eagerly. She    42    her list. It had many items on it, enough to fill 3 pages. She read all three pages to her husband and seemed to be quite pleased with her hard “work”. After hearing that, the husband stated   43   , “I don’t have anything on my list. I think that you are perfect the   44   that you are. I don’t want you to   45   anything for me.”
The wife, touched by his honesty and the depth of his love for and his   46   of her without any conditions, turned her head and wept. At that moment, she came to understand the saying: “Beauty lies in the lover's eyes”.
In life, there are enough time when we are disappointed, depressed and annoyed. We don’t really have to go  47   for them. We have a wonderful world that is full of beauty, light and promise. Why waste time seeking the bad, disappointing or annoying when we can look around us, and see the wonderful things before us? If you are accustomed to judging people, you have no time to love them.

When I was a child, my parents taught me the difference between good and bad behavior by showing me specific examples. My mother told me that you don’t   36   other kids because you would not like    37   if they hit you. That makes   38    . But, if my mother told me to be “nice” to someone, it was too vague for me to   39  . But if she said that being nice                40    delivering daffodils to a next door neighbor, that I could understand.
I believe that doing practical things can  41    the world a better place. When I was in my twenties I thought a lot about the meaning of life. At the time, I was getting started in my  42     of designing more humane facilities for animals at big farms and slaughterhouses(屠宰场). Many people would think that to even work at a slauterhouse would be inhumane, but they   43   that every human and animal   44   dies. In my mind, I had a(n)   45    of a way to make tht dying as   46   as possible.
Back in the 1970s, I went to fifty different feedlots and big farms in Arizona and Texas and       47   them work cattle. I cataloged the parts of each facility that   48   effectively. I took the best loading ramps, and other components and  49     them into an ideal new system. I get great   50   when a farmer tells me that my corral (畜栏)  51   helps cattle move through it quietly and   52  . When cattle stay calm, it means they are not scared. And that makes me feel I’ve    53   something important.
Some people might think if I could snap my   54   I’d choose to be “normal”. But, I wouldn’t want to give up my    55    to see in beautiful, precise pictures. I believe in them.

Who is setting your standards for you ?
A true story has it that one elder man   36   to jog around the local high school football field. As he huffed and puffed(气喘吁吁) along, the team was   37  . The players soon started running sprints (断距离疾跑)up and down the field. The man told himself “I will   38   keep running until they quit.”
So he ran. And they ran. And he ran some more. And they kept running. And he kept running until he   39   finally run no more. He stopped in   40  . One of the players, equally out of breath, approached him and said in a crying voice, “Boy, I am so glad that you finally stopped.  41  told us we had to keep running   42   the old guy who was jogging !” He was watching them. They were watching him. He was letting them set his   43  , on the contrary, they allow him to set  44  .
My question is this: Are you keeping   45  with somebody else in your daily life? Are you  46   people to set your standards for you? What about your standards, or   47   , for moral behavior or even your way of building up your own characteristics ? Or guidelines for what kind of life   48   you want? Negative or positive? Do you keep pace with those   49   you, or do you decided yourself just  50   you will live your life? The true is that only you are   51   to determine what your standards will be.
Set your standards to low, and you will know only   52  . But set high standards and you can live an immeasurably full and   53   life. For only when you   54   the best that is within yourself, will you experience great living. Just as an old saying goes: “Think big   55  , and win big success.”
