My parents ran a small restaurant in Seattle. It was open twenty-four hours a day, six days a week. And my first real job, when I was six years old, was 36 the diners’ shoes. My father had done it when he was young, so he taught me 37 to do it well, telling me to 38 to shine the shoes again if the customer wasn’t 39 .
I was proud of working in the restaurant 40 I was also working for the good of the family. But my father 41 said that I had to meet certain standards(标准) to be part of the team. I 42 to be on time, hard-working, and polite to the 43 . I was 44 paid for the work I did at the restaurant. One day I made the mistake of suggesting to Dad that he 45 give me $10 a week. In a national spelling contest in America,an 11-year-old girl was asked to spell a certain word. But with her 36 voice the judges were not sure whether she spelled the word with the letter A or E. They talked it over and 37 decided to simply ask her what she had said. By now, the girl knew she had 38 the word. But instead of lying, she told the truth that she had said the 39 letter—so she lost the contest.
As the girl walked off the 40 ,the entire audience stood to their feet clapping to applaud her 41 . Later, dozens of newspaper reporters wrote about this 11-year-old girl’s honesty, even when it 42 her the contest. But the fact is that she 43 the biggest contest that day: the contest of her 44 .
Probably the biggest test of our character and honesty is that we would do if we knew we would never get 45 . This young girl could easily have 46 and nobody would have known it but herself. But that’s just it: She would know she did wrong. It’s been said, “If you 47 , you make yourself cheap.” This young girl was strong and smart enough to prize her own 48 and character more than the prize from a spelling 49 . Her respect for herself was more important than any 50 others might give her for winning a contest. She knew she would have to live with herself and the 51 she made in that moment will have long-lasting influence.
It’s so true that the choices you make today 52 what you are tomorrow. Our children will 53 our behavior much more than our advice. So if we want them to 54 to be honest,we must show them the way by being honest ourselves. Remember, our kids are 55 what we do and how we live even when we don’t think they see or know.

We took the bus from the suburb every early morning that summer 3 years ago. One of the passengers was a small 36 man who took the bus to the centre for senior citizens every morning. He walked with a stoop (佝偻) and a sad look on his face when he, with some difficulty, 37 the bus and sat down alone behind the driver. No one ever paid very much attention to him.
Then one 38 morning he said good morning to the driver and smiled before he sat down. The driver 39 guardedly. The rest of us were silent. The next day, the old man boarded the bus energetically, 40 and said in a loud voice: “And a very good morning to you all!” Some of us looked up, amazed, and murmured “Good morning,” 41 . The following weeks we were more alert (留意的). Our friend was now dressed in a nice old suit and a wide out-of-date 42 . The thin hair had been carefully combed. He said good morning to us every day and we 43 began to nod and talk to each other.
One morning he had a bunch of wild flowers in his hand. The driver 44 smilingly and asked:“Have you got yourself a girlfriend, Charlie?”and he nodded shyly and said yes. The other passengers 45 and clapped at him. Charlie bowed and waved the 46 before he sat down on his seat. Every morning after that Charlie always brought a flower. Some of the 47 passengers began bringing him flowers for his bouquet(花束).
The summer went by, and 48 was closing in, when one morning Charlie wasn't waiting at his usual 49 . When he wasn't there the next day and the day after that, we started wondering if he was sick or — 50 — on holiday somewhere.
One day, we learned from the staff working in the centre for senior citizens that the elderly 51 was fine, but he hadn't been coming to the 52 that week. One of his very close friends had died at the weekend. They 53 him back on Monday. How silent we were the rest of the way to work.
The next 54 Charlie was waiting at the stop, stooping a bit more, a little bit more grey, and without a tie. He seemed to have shrinked(缩小)again. Inside the bus was a 55 . All of us sat with our eyes filled with tears and a bunch of wild flowers in our hands.

After 17 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. She said, “I love you, but I know this other woman loves you and would love to spend some 36 with you.”
The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my MOTHER, who has been 37 for 20 years, but the demands of my work and my boys made it possible to visit her only 38 .
Then I called to visit her to go out for dinner and a movie. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she had curled her 39 and was wearing a nice dress. My mother took my arm 40 she were the First Lady.
During the dinner, we had an agreeable 41 —nothing extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each other’s life. We talked so much that we missed the movie. At last, she said,” I’ll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you.” I 42 .
Two days later, my mother died of a massive heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn’t have a 43 to do anything for her.

I wasn’t sure that I could be there; but nevertheless, I paid for two plates—one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night 45 for me. I love you, son.”

Because my family were not going to be helpful, I decided I would look for one all by myself and not tell them about it till I’d got one.

In 1956 Phoenix, Arizona, was a city with boundless blue 1 . One day as I walked around the house with my sister Kathy’s new parakeet (小鹦鹉)on my finger, I wanted to show Perky what the sky looked like. I took him into the backyard, and then, to my horror , Perky flew off. The enormous, blue sky swallowed up my sister’s blue 2 and suddenly he had gone, clipped wings and all.
I told Kathy about Perky's disappearance and I was anxious that she would blame me. But , unexpectedly, Kathy managed to 3 me. With fake optimism, she even tried to convince me that Perky would find a new 4 . But I was far too clever to 5 that such a thing was possible.
Decades later, I watched my own 6 growing. We shared their activities, spending soccer Saturdays in folding chairs with the 7 of the kids’ friends, the Kissells. The two families went camping around Arizona together. We became the best of friends. One evening, the game was to tell Great Pet stories. One person claimed(宣称) to 8 the oldest living goldfish. Someone else had a psychic dog. Then Barry, the father of the other family, took the floor and ___9___that the Greatest Pet of All Time was his blue parakeet, Sweetie Pie.
"The best thing about Sweetie Pie," he said, "was the 10 we got him. One day, when I was about eight, out of the clear, blue sky, a little blue parakeet just 11 down and landed on my finger."
When I was finally able to 12 , we examined the amazing evidence. The dates and the locations and the pictures of the bird all 13 . It seems our two families had been 14 long before we ever met. Forty years later, I ran to my sister and said, "You were 15 ! Perky lived!"

The monkey tried to eat them, but hurt his teeth. The apples were made of wood, but they were beautiful, and when the other monkeys said that they 38 them, he held onto them even tighter.
The monkey admired his new possessions proudly as he wandered the jungle. The two apples glistened (闪亮) red in the 39 , and seemed perfect to him. He became so attached to them that he didn’t even notice his 40 at first.
A fruit tree reminded him, but he felt the apples in his hands. He couldn’t bear to set them down to reach for the fruit. In fact, he couldn’t 41 , either, if he was to defend his apples. This proud, but less happy monkey continued to walk along the forest trails (小路).
The apples became 42 , and the poor little monkey thought about leaving them behind. He was tired and hungry; he couldn’t climb trees or collect fruit with his hands 43 . What if he just let go (释放)?
Letting go of such 44 things seemed crazy, but what else could he do? He was so tired. Seeing the next fruit tree and smelling its fruit, the monkey stopped. He 45 the wooden apples and reached up for his meal. He was happy again.
