Many people today are worried about the quality of the food they eat. This concern has led to an increasing number of organic products appearing on supermarket shelves. Some advocates of genetically modified foods consider such attitudes unjustified. I am one of them, and in this essay I will try to justify why I think concerns about GM foods have little value.

Contrary to the claims of those who oppose GM foods, there have not been any officially reported cases of such foods causing cancer or any other diseases. In fact, research into GM foods has been unable to confirm any harmful effects on human health whatsoever.

Climate change and rising fuel costs have led to global increases in the price of food, and as a result, many poor people are spending more money on feeding themselves. Many can hardly afford to buy food. GM plants are generally more resistant to droughts, floods and pests, and have higher production per hectare(公顷), which leads to more affordable food prices.
The world population keeps growing and is expected to reach eight billion by 2015. People in fast-developing countries such as India and China are consuming more energy and food. The only solution to the ever-increasing demand for food is to grow more GM crops. Unless scientists and governments come up with a better solution, GM foods are here to stay.
To conclude, people are free to eat the food of their choice, whether it is organic or not. However, I think that many people overlook major benefits of GM foods, and instead choose to focus on the unproven negative effects of such foods.

Manners nowadays in metropolitan cities like London are practically non-existent. It is nothing for a big, strong schoolboy to push an elderly woman aside to take the last remaining seat on the underway or bus.
This question of giving up seats in public transport is much argued about by young men, who say that since women have claimed equality, they no longer deserve to be treated with politeness and that those who go out to work should take their turns in the rat race like anyone else. But women have never claimed to be physically strong as men. Even if it is not agreed, however, the fact remains that courtesy(礼节) should be shown to the old and the sick. It’s necessary to use different ways to communicate for different purposes. Study, made by Jeff Hancock of Cornell University in New York, has found that people are twice as likely to tell lies in phone conversations as they are in e-mails.
Hancock made an investigation by asking 30 students to keep a communication diary for a week. He found that lies made up 14% of e-mails, 21% of instant messages, 27% of face-to-face interactions and an astonishing 37% of phone calls.
His results, to be presented at the conferences on human computer interaction in Vienna, Austria, in April, have surprised psychologists.
Hancock says it is very important and effective whether a conversation is being recorded and could be reread, and whether it occurs in real time. People appear to be afraid to lie when they know that they will be responsible for what they have said in the conversation. This is why fewer lies appear in e-mail than on the phone.
People are even more likely to lie in real time—in an instant message or phone call. Many lies are sudden or immediate responses to demands that they don’t expect.”
Hancock hopes his research will help many a company work out the best ways for their employees to communicate. For instance, the phone might be the best medium for selling their products where employees are encouraged to stretch the truth. But given his results, work assessment, where honesty is regarded as more important than others, might be best done using e-mail.

In ancient times, Peking Opera was performed mostly on stage in the open air, teahouses or temple courtyards. Since the orchestra played loudly, the performers developed a sharp style of singing. The costumes were a gorgeous collection of sharply contrasting colors to stand out on the stage lighted only by oil lamps. Peking Opera is a harmonious combination of the Grand Opera, ballet and acrobatics (杂技),consisting of dance, dialogue and martial arts.
The Peking Opera band mainly consists of an orchestra and percussion(打击乐器)band. The former frequently accompanies peaceful scenes while the latter provides the right atmosphere for battle scenes. The orchestral instruments include the Erhu, Huqin, Yueqin, Sheng, Pipa and other instruments. The band usually sits on the left side of the stage.
