Congratulations! You are about to start a multi-faceted(多面的) journey of exploration. You are about to enter high school as a freshman. And here are some tips on how to start a new year at a new school.
As a high school freshman, choose courses that suit you. I encourage you to take a few courses with the title “Honors”, because they are meant to be challenging and intellectually exciting. If you are hungering for knowledge, see if you can take Advanced Placement (AP) course(大学预修课)---courses that may allow students to earn college credit(学分) for performing satisfactorily in the AP exams held nationally every May. AP classes such as AP Environmental Science and AP Human Geography are well-known for being easy, so taking either of them would be a perfect way of getting yourself into the AP program deeply.
Try to find a balance between in-school activities and out-of-school activities. An imbalance will surely cause you to be stressed. If you love sports, consider trying out for the various sports teams your school offers. Exercise is a great way to stay in shape, learn proper time management, gain new friendships, and keep your mind away from school day stress. Also consider joining your school’s band or some other clubs your school offers. Most importantly, be a part of activities that you are fond of.
If you’re a high achieving student, you’re probably asking yourself, “ What should I do to get into a top college?” The truth is that when most colleges judge your college application, they don’t focus on your freshman year grades or extracurricular activities. Freshman year of high school is supposed to be a time of exploration—a time to find out your favorites and to develop them in the future. However, the method to apply to (申请)colleges is sometimes confusing, so you would benefit yourself by at least knowing the types of standardized tests you need to take before applying to college. The best resource for this is “ The College Board”, the company that creates the college entrance exams you will take in the future.
Your high school experiences will undoubtedly be very important to you. It is the last step before you begin your life as an adult. Freshman year of high school is the time to make your interests and activities to fit who you are. As a freshman, challenge yourself in and out of classroom. Stay positive , work hard and remember to have fun!

Anger(生气) is a very common human emotion and at some time or another we all experience it. From young children to old people we all feel angry in various times and for various reasons. There is nothing wrong with this. It is only when you lose control of your feelings and begin to shout and complain unnecessarily about something unimportant that it is seen as a problem. Since it is a natural emotion, you do not have to try to get rid of it completely. You only have to control it.
The first thing you should do is to improve your self-image. This will be of great help to you in your management of anger. You will find that when you are in a situation where you would normally get angry and shout, you will have the self-confidence to put your case forward without displaying anger to cover up your emotions. This will give you a better image of yourself and help you to feel good about yourself. Remember that others think of you what you think of yourself.
A good idea is to think about what makes you angry while you are in a good mood. It is no use asking the question once your anger has been aroused (激起). What situation is it that can make you lose your temper in a second? It is usually not even very big issues that can make you do this. It is usually just the fact that things are not going in your own way. By avoiding these issues you can control your anger.
Make a list(清单) of the things that cause you to get angry. Discuss your list with your family and they will give you their help in any way they can. They will be so pleased that you are trying to be different that you can be sure that they will do everything they can to make you happy.
There are many reasons for people to lose their temper in everyday life and that is why it is so important to learn to manage it. There is nothing wrong with getting angry about something if your anger is controlled. Saying what you think is necessary but never raising your voice in anger or becoming threatening to the person you have directed your anger at is what you are supposed to do.

In the United States, engineering is a profession that has been dominated historically by men. Even today, it’s still true that few women become civil or chemical or mechanical engineers, but that’s something www.EngineerGirl.org aims to change. Young women who visit the web site can find out about a great career choice they might not have considered.
“Women are very much underrepresented in engineering and in engineering education programs and then of course, down the road, in the engineering workforce. So only about 20 percent of engineering undergraduate degrees go to women, and then only about nine percent of working engineers are women.”
Mary Mattis in the National Academy of Engineering, says the EngineerGirl website aims to reach young women around ages 11 through 14, when they are just getting old enough to start thinking about their futures.
“We know from the research that middle-school girls are at a critical point in their lives, and that it’s a time when we need to reach them, both with an understanding, increasing their awareness of interesting fields in engineering, what a wonderful productive and exciting career you can have as an engineer. But we also need to reach them at that time because you have to take certain courses, and you can’t start thinking about taking those courses when you’re a junior in high school.”
Engineering is a demanding course of study ---there is a lot of science and mathematics, for many girls and even boys, that can be challenging. But Ms. Mattis says that the EngineerGirl website stresses that engineering can also be fun and exciting.
“It’s about designing things. It’s about changing the world for people. It’s about making a difference. And, in addition, you can make a good living, you can be independent economically by becoming an engineer. All of those things are messages that girls need to get.”
While most engineers go into traditional fields such as mechanical and electrical engineering, the EngineerGirl site also highlights unusual engineering careers in fields such as sports engineering and --- believe it or not --- chocolate engineering.
“There’s a section called ‘why be an engineer,’ and that talks about the many opportunities and increasingly different opportunities like with bio-engineering and environmental engineering, some fields that might appeal to girls who want to make a difference or have a meaning for their careers beyond earning an income.”
Even if you are not a girl in the target age group, there’s a lot of interesting information on the site, including biographies of some notable women engineers.

Time, a faithful company of our life, is a universal topic. People are always curious about what it is, how it travels and who it meets.
Stephen Hawking, one of the world’s smartest physicists, once said. “I’m fascinated by time.”
Many of us are, and the popularity of time travel novels, movies and TV series has proved that. After Palace and Startling by Each Step achieved astonishing ratings last year, Palace 2 aired on January 20, attracting time travel fans back to TV.
Woody Allen’s movie Midnight in Paris achieved great success. It was nominated for Best Picture, Directing, Original Screenplay and Art Direction for the 2012 Academy Awards.
Dream of heroism
Time travel TV series and movies connect both today and the past, thus offering room for imagination. Imagination creates a chance for the young to fulfill a dream that is hard to achieve in reality.
Chinese writer Xi Juan is a pioneer of time-travel stories in China. In 1993 she published a love story about a young woman time traveling to ancient times. The leading role’s modern personality and perception of love help her win the heart of a cool, handsome martial art master. Such a plot satisfies female fans’ love fantasy.
Starting from the late 1990s, novels about men traveling back to the past prevailed (盛行), with a Step into the Past as the most popular example. In these stories, the male leading roles accomplish great things with their modern skills and wisdom.
It is usually “a dream of heroism come true”, along with enviable romances.
Eye candy
“I’m hooked by the shows because they are characterized by dramatic and poetic love and have eye-pleasing actors,” Xia Xiaoyan, who works for a foreign-owned enterprise in Shanghai, explained her love for time travel TV series.
Her comment echoes a 2011 survey by Creat Marketing Research Co Ltd in China. When asked about what is so appealing about time travel TV series, 21 percent of respondents answered, “These attractive characters.”
A bigger reason behind the popularity of time travel stories, however, is the relaxation they offer, according to the survey.
Cai Yinong agrees. “Many people are facing tremendous pressure in their fast-paced lives, so this genre is more relaxing than other shows as it provides people with a terrific outlet to escape reality,” Cai told China Daily.
Cultural homesickness
“Which dynasty would you like to live in if you could travel to the past?” asked a survey launched by Shanghai University and Shanghai Social Sciences Association last December.
About 60 percent of the 2,543 respondents chose Tang Dynasty, while Qing Dynasty, and the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods were the other top two destinations.
The survey results reflects people’s definition of the good days: prosperous economy and culture, steady society, fair and uncorrupted politics, and opening up to the outside world.
As for the movie Midnight in Paris, it features modernity versus cultural homesickness. The New York Times commented, “The past seems so much more vivid, more substantial, than the present. The good old days are so attractive because we were not around, however much we wish we were.”

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, only to find his 5-year old son for him at the door.
“Daddy, may I ask you a question?”
“Yeah,_____ , what is it?”replied the man.
“Daddy, how much do you make an hour?”
“That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?”the man said .
“I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?”pleaded the little boy.
“If you must know, I make $20 an hour. ”
“Oh,”the little boy replied, with his head . Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I please borrow $10? ”
The father was furious,“if the only reason why you asked that is that you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to . Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day for such childish behavior”
The little boy quietly went to his room and the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy that $10 and he really didn't ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.
“Are you asleep, son?”He asked.
“No, daddy, I'm .”replied the boy.
“I've been thinking, maybe I was too on you earlier,”said the man, “It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here's the $10 you asked for.”
The little boy sat straight up, smiling.“Oh, thank you daddy!” He yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills. The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at his father.
“Why do you want more money when you aready have some?”the father grumbled.
“Because I didn't have , but now I do, ”the little boy replied.“Daddy, I have $20 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.”
Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:
1. Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
2. Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
3. Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
4. Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
5. Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

Experiencing bad dreams every night can be horrifying for anybody. Bad dreams can disturb the sleep and make a person feel stressed throughout the next day. That’s why one should take steps to stop them as soon as they become an everyday occurrence.
Before knowing how to get rid of bad dreams, we need to understand what can result in them. Researches have shown that when a person is under some sort of physical or mental stress, he is more likely to get bad dreams and disturbed sleep. So, to stop bad dreams, it’s necessary to find out the causes of physical and mental stress in your life and remove these. For instance, if you’re overworked, learn to take things slow. Don’t be ambitious to the point that it starts affecting your health.
Besides, some trauma(损伤) that a person might have experienced recently or in the past which they’re unable to get over can make the person suffer from bad dreams. Death of a very close family member is often seen to be the reason behind recurrent nightmares. In such a case, taking therapy and dealing with the trauma is the only solution to stop bad dreams.
Eating fatty and high-protein foods in dinner is also known to cause bad dreams in some people. So, bad dreams occurring because of these reasons can be stopped if the diet is changed. Taking a light dinner of soups and salad is the best, both for the health and for stopping disturbed sleep in some cases.
Besides these, there are many other things a person can do to have a good night’s sleep. For example, your bedroom should be the most comfortable place in the world. So, get rid of all electronic gadgets including television. In addition, if you have negative thoughts, it can have side effects on the kind of dreams you have. So, from now on try to be a happy and positive person.

D. R. Gaul Middle School is in Union, Maine, a blueberry-farming town where the summer fair finds kids competing in pig scrambles and pie-eating contests.
Gaul, with about 170 seventh- and eighth-graders, has its own history of lower level academic achievement. One likely reason: Education beyond the basic requirements hasn't always been a top priority for families who've worked the same land for generations. Here, few adults have college degrees, and outsiders (teachers included) are often kept at a respectful distance.
Since 2002, Gaul's students have been divided into four classes, each of them taught almost every subject by two teachers. The goal: To find common threads across disciplines to help students create a big picture that gives fresh meaning and context to their classwork -- and sparks motivation for learning.
Working within state guidelines, each team makes its individual schedules and lesson plans, incorporating non-textbook literature, hands-on lab work and field trips. If students are covering the Civil War in social studies, they're reading The Red Badge of Courage or some other period literature in English class. In science, they study the viruses and bacteria that caused many deaths in the war.
Team teaching isn't unusual. About 77 percent of middle schools now employ some form of it, says John Lounsbury, consulting editor for the National Middle School Association. But most schools use four- or five-person teams, which Gaul tried before considering two-person teams more effective. Gaul supports the team concept by "looping" classes (跟班) so that the same two teachers stick with the same teens through seventh and eighth grades. Combining teams and looping creates an extremely strong bond between teacher and student. It also, says teacher Beth Ahlholm, "allows us to build an excellent relationship with parents."
Ahlholm and teammate Madelon Kelly are fully aware how many glazed looks they see in the classroom, but they know 72 percent of their eighth-graders met Maine's reading standard last year -- double the statewide average. Only 31 percent met the math standard, still better than the state average (21 percent). Their students also beat the state average in writing and science. And in2006, Gaul was one of 47 schools in the state to see testing gains of at least 20 percent in four of the previous five years, coinciding roughly with team teaching's arrival.
