“Welcome, Mary,” I said. She raised her head and looked into my eyes. The smile on my face 36 . Dear God, I thought, what 37 has entered the life of this little girl?
After settling Mary into her new desk and 38 her, I went to the headmaster. She said, “Sit down and I’ll 39 you in. Mary’s mother who loved her very much was shot and killed in her 40 one night at their house. Mary, screaming, escaped to a neighbor’s. Then the child went into 41 . She hadn’t cried or 42 her mother since.”

Thank you, God, You’ve 54 us the miracle(奇迹). I knelt and put my arms around the child. Then the tears came, slowly at first, but soon she was 55 her heart out against my shoulder. The other children had tears in their eyes, too, but theirs—like mine—were tears of joy.

Have you ever imagined that you could be cloned(克隆)like Dolly, the sheep,in the not too distant future?
The news that a human embryo(胚胎)has been 36 cloned for the first time has caused mixed reactions(反应).
The 37 was carried out by scientists from the Advanced Cell Technology Inc(ACT),in Massachusetts,US. The group 38 the news on November 25.
This is not a cloned human being. “A 39 is alive,it walks,it breathes,”said Jamie Grifo,an expert on the study of cloning at New York University School of Medicine.
“This is a set of cells in a lab that will be used to 40 someone's life.”
Such research could lead to treatment for 41 such as heart disease,AIDS and even cancer, 42 scientists.
Despite high hopes from other scientists, the news 43 concerns immediately from religious and political leaders. Several 44 in the US do not allow human cloning. President George W.Bush also made it clear that he is 45 any type of human cloning. However, the 46 at ACT said they have no interest at present in developing an early embryo into 47 .
Animals have been cloned repeatedly since Dolly, the sheep, 48 in 1997.And there were no real technical 49 to stand in the way of scientists making a cloned human embryo.
This time the research group used traditional cloning technology with a human 50 . 51 it was given DNA from an adult cell, the egg began to 52 . 53 it was stopped from becoming a baby—at a stage in which it was 54 a ball of cells. The 55 technology has been used to clone sheep, cattle and monkeys.

You must know the “ding dong ditch”. Person A rings Person B’s doorbell, and then quickly runs away or hides before Person B answers. Person B hurries to answer the door, only to find that no one’s there. After the 1 thing is repeated several times, this is called “ding dong ditch”.
Sharon Mardis, a single mother of four, told ABC News that she 2 a “ding dong ditch” when she 3 to her door at 1:00 am last night.
“My doorbell started ringing, 4 I came to the door,” Sharon told ABC News. “There was 5 at the door. I went back in the house. I got ten or twenty 6 and the doorbell started ringing again. I came back to the door, still nobody at the door.” She got 7 and stepped outside, shouting, “Who’s that? What on earth are you going to do?” There was just 8 .
But after Sharon returned to the house, she 9 something. Smoke! Sharon quickly 10 her kids and the family pets and ran out of the house. Only then did she 11 how bad the fire was. The 12 of the house fell down; the house was quickly 13 by flames. The smoke detectors(探测器) had never 14 : they were out of batteries. Good thing for the doorbell.
The 15 is who had rung it. 16 found that the flames has fused(熔化) the wires of the doorbell together, causing it to ring. But 17 , the fire had nothing to do with the doorbell wiring at all. It had started in the bathroom, well down the hall. From there, the flames didn’t spread to the nearby 18 , where the children and Sharon were sleeping. 19 , they surprisingly reached the doorbell first, making it ring repeatedly, and 20 Sharon to avoid danger.
Sharon believes it happened that way thanks to an angel.

Last winter, when I was heavily pregnant(怀孕), I was visiting my sister and brother-in-law’s house. I had to park my car in a nearby parking lot because they didn’t have a place for parking. The snow was extremely heavy and there was lots of 1 on the ground, so not many people dared to go out that evening! When I left their house and 2 to my car around 11pm, I noticed that my car was the only one 3 .
Surrounded by silence, I rushed into the car nervously. When I finally tried to 4 away, my wheels began to spin(打滑). I realized I was stuck! I wondered what I should do. 5 , in my rear-view mirror(后视镜), I saw four teenage boys 6 my car. They were walking side by side in a line and behaved a bit like 7 ------ at least I thought that was what they looked like. My car was in a very 8 area and I was so frightened when I saw them. I was certain they were coming to my car to 9 me.
Terrified, I just froze. One of the young men tapped on my window 10 and said, “Excuse me, Madam, would you like some 11 ? You seem to have a problem with the car.” Still a little afraid, I said, “I am stuck.” And the young man said, “It’s okay. Stay in your car and we’ll 12 you out of the snow.” And they did! When they finally got my car out of the snow, they 13 and waved good-bye to me. I rolled down my window and thanked them, 14 to have judged them so poorly.
People like to judge the person they come across, and they are in turn judged by others. It’s natural that we judge others, but when we do this, we shouldn’t 15 the old saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

The afternoon on December 25 in the waiting room, I was the nurse on duty. When I felt sad about having to 1 on Christmas Day, a woman and four small children showed up at my desk.
“Are you all sick?” I asked. “Yes.” the woman said 2 and lowered her head. But when it came to telling me about their 3 , things got a little surprising. They all seemed to be well and there was nothing 4 with their body.
Why did they tell a 5 that they were all sick? I did not say anything but 6 that it might be a little time before a doctor could 7 them . The mother said, “Take your time. We can 8 here. It’s so warm.” When she finished the register chart, I noticed she didn’t write down their address----were they 9 ?
I looked at the 10 around the Christmas tree. The children were excited and 11 to be healthy. The littlest one was pointing at the Christmas tree and said something to the mother. Then I was sure that they came here not because of 12 but only for warmth.
I went back to the nurses’ station and 13 the homeless family. The nurses, 14 about working on Christmas Day like me, turned to feel sorry for the family and decided to 15 .We bought delicious food in the hospital restaurant and 16 a big dinner for our guests. We needed 17 . So we put apples in a basket and collected candies and clothes. Just as we were seriously prepared to meet the physical needs of the 18 , our team worked to meet the needs of a family who just wanted to be 19 on Christmas Day.
Later, as the family was to 20 , the youngest child ran to me and said, “Thank you very much. Good bye. ”

Known as the Animal Lady in this area which I lived in, I was always asked to lend a hand in animal 36 . One afternoon three little neighbor girls ran up 37 my door, saying a baby squirrel was on the sidewalk. I quickly 38 the kids and they led me to a tiny squirrel still with milk teeth. I 39 and held the little creature up gently in my arms to check it for 40 . It seemed fine. I figured the mother must have been killed, 41 it an orphan(孤儿). Now, the baby was pretty hungry for milk and then left its nest to 42 the neighborhood for help.
I was about to carry it into my 43 when I found several other babies starting to run down the tree from where their nest was. With the first squirrel hid into my 44 , I stood at the base of the tree and was 45 when three more babies ran right down into my hands. Those dear little creatures were so happy to feel safe and 46 ,and they all held each other close in my shirt. I took them home and 47 them bread and milk to eat. The poor starving things went 48 as they swallowed the meal.
I phoned a lady in the next town who 49 a small squirrel shelter. She had a big back yard with large 50 surrounded by a tall wooden fence. She assured me she was well 51 to care for the babies and provide a natural home for them when they were grown.

I used to hate being called upon in class mainly because I didn’t like attention drawn to myself. And 1 assigned(指定)a seat by the teacher, I always 2 to sit at the back of the classroom.
All this 3 after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the basketball team. At first I thought it was a crazy 4 because I didn’t have a good sense of balance, nor did I have the 5 to keep pace with the others on the team and they would laugh at me. Without the teacher who kept insisting on my “ 6 for it”, I wouldn’t have decided to give a try.
Getting up the courage to go to the tryouts was only the 7 of it! When I first started 8 the practice sessions (练习赛), I didn’t 9 know the rules of the game, not to mention what I was doing. Sometimes I’d get 10 and take a shot at the wrong direction—which made me feel really stupid. 11 , I wasn’t the only one “new” at the game, so I decided to 12 on learning the game, do my best at each practice session, and not be too hard on myself for the things I didn’t 13 “just yet”.
I practiced and practiced. Soon I knew the 14 and the “moves”. Being part of a team was fun and motivating. Very soon the competitive 15 in me was winning over my lack of confidence. With time, I learned how to play and made friends in the process (过程) — friends who respected my 16 to work hard and be a team player. I never had so much fun!
With my 17 self-confidence comes more praise (赞扬) from teachers and classmates. I have gone from “ 18”in the back of the classroom and not wanting to call attention to myself, 19 raising my hand—even when I sometimes wasn’t and not 100 percent 20 I had the right answer. Now I have more self-confidence in myself.

About one year ago, a couple with three children moved into the apartment next door to me. I never heard any noise from the children, but I often heard the parents 26 shouting at the kids, not in a nice tone, but in a (n) 27 one.

I forgot to tell her how 37 I was for her kindness. I wrote a note saying how much her act of kindness had 38 an old man’s heart.
The next day there was a (n) 39 on my door and it was the little girl and her father. She was quite 40 of her behavior and thanked me. Then I noticed her mother was there, too. Her parents 41 me, too.

Last night there was a heavy snow. I looked out at my car and 43 how I was going to keep my doctor’s 44 because I could only walk for a short time. This morning when I opened the front door, all the snow was removed.
Isn’t it 45 that the small kind act of an 8-year-old girl can change so many things for the better? It is said that good tings come from small acts.

When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of 6 at him, giving him a lecture, or punishing him, she said: “Robert, what a 7 and wonderful mess you have made! I have 8 seen such a huge pool of milk.Well, the damage has already been done.Would you like to 9 down and play in the milk for a few minutes 10 we clean it up?”
Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said: “You know, Robert, 11 you make a mess like this, you have to clean it up at last and 12 everything to its proper order. So, how would you like to do that? We could use a sponge (海绵), a towel, or a mop.Which do you 13 ?” He chose the sponge and together they 14 the milk.
His mother then said: “You know, what happened just now is a 15 experiment in how effectively to carry a big milk bottle with two 16 hands.Let’s go out in the backyard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can 17____ a way to carry it without dropping it.” The little boy 18 that if he held the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it.
This scientist then 19 that it was at that moment that he knew he didn’t need to be afraid to make 20 .

Long long ago, human beings used to walk barefoot. A king happened to travel 16 into the countryside. He was greatly troubled by the 17 roads where gravel(砾石) and broken stones pricked(使刺痛) and numbed(使麻木) his 18 . When he returned to his palace he issued an order that all the roads be 19 with cattle hide(牛皮). He thought it was beneficial not only to 20 but also to his people and hoped 21 would no longer be a painful thing
But 22 all the cattle in the kingdom were killed there 23 not be enough hide to get the work done. Evidently it was a stupid 24 . As it was an imperial order people could do nothing but shake their heads and 25 . At this juncture a clever servant in the palace 26 to make a suggestion. "Your Majesty, why don't take an easier way? You don't have to mobilize(调动)so many people, to have so many oxen killed, nor so much money 27 . What you have to do is simply to cover each of your feet with a piece of hide." Surprised and 28 , the king immediately changed his mind and adopted the 29 .
This is said to be the origin of using 30 to make shoes. Though it sounds 31 and strange, it inspires us to think. It is much easier to change oneself than to change the world. 32 it will be much better for one to change oneself before one 33 an attempt to change the outer world. Why don't try to put yourself on the 34 of the person you deal with? You will find it easier to solve a problem 35 you change your way of thinking.
