I’d meant to go to Miros that day. I’d packed my bag and was ready. The motor-boat in on time. The sky was cloudy, but the wind wasn’t too strong for the two-hour . I stood at my window, staring at the boat. Then I lost of her, an old light-house partly blocked my view of the harbor. A dozen passengers were their way there. I was about to join them --- when a man’s face at the light-house window.
This was strange, because the light-house had been empty, unused and for thirty years. It was stranger still --- because I’d seen that before. I couldn’t place it but it was, or had once been, familiar to me. I opened my window and across. “I know we’ve met before, but I can’t remember where.”
I him to open his if he could and answer me. He did neither. The face behind the glass motionless (静止). Seeing him more clearly now, I knew he was not looking at me. He seemed to be looking upwards, the clouds. How well I’d known that face, sometime, somewhere!
I again. “We met years ago. Was it in Athens in the 1950s? I used to live in Plaka.”
He didn’t reply nor give any that he’d heard. I went back further, to I was in the navy. “Perhaps we met at sea during the war,” and that thought at once him to mind. Commander Leftis! He was Commander Leftis of course! How could I have forgotten? I’d saved his life once. But surely he …
The motor-boat her bell. I turned my eyes. The wind had risen, but she was pulling . Laughing, I called, “Now I’ve missed her, and it’s your , Commander!”
As the boat drew away, the face at the window faded. minute it was there. Looking up, I could see the whites of the eyes. The minute it was gone.
Well, I didn’t rush to the light-house. I knew that Leftis was dead. He died at sea in 1963 or 1964. But there’s one other thing I ought to tell you: the motor-boat never reached Miros. It was lost in a storm, with all the passengers.

I was fifteen when I walked into Black Stump Bookstore in Liverpool. As I was looking at on the shelves, the shop owner asked if I’d like . I needed to start for college, so I said yes. I worked after school and during summers for the lowest wages, and the job helped my first year of college. I had worked in many other jobs: I made coffee in the Students’ Union during college, I was a hotel maid and I make maps for the Forest Service. But selling books was one of the most .
One day a woman asked me for books on women’s diseases. She seemed fearful. I showed her almost everything we had at that time and found other books we could order. She left the store less . I’ve always remembered the felt in having helped her.

Life is filled with challenges. As we get older we realize that those challenges are the very things that us and make us who we are. It is the same with the challenges that come with .
When we are faced with a challenge, we usually have two . We can try to beat it off, or we can decide that the thing the challenge isn't worth the and call it quits. Although there are certainly when calling it quits is the right thing to do, in most all that is needed is and communication.
When we are committed to something, it means that no matter how or how uncomfortable something is, we will always choose to it and work it through instead of running away from it. Communication is making a for discussion and talking about how you feel as opposed to just saying what the other person did wrong. you can say to a friend, "I got my feeling hurt," "You hurt my feelings," you are going to be able to solve the problem much faster.
In dealing with the many challenges that friendship will bring to you, try to see them for they are: small hurdles you need to jump or on your way through life. Nothing is so big that it is to get over, and hurt only to make us stronger. It is all part of growing up, it to everyone, and some day you will all of this and say, "Hard as it was, it made me who I am today. And that is a good thing."

When we read books we seem to enter a new world. This new world can be similar to the one we are living in, or it can be very 21 . Some stories are told 22 they were true. Real people who live in a 23 world do real things; in other words, the stories are about people just like us doing what we do. Other stories, such as the Harry Potter books, are not 24 . They are characters and creatures that are very different from us and do things that would be 25 for us.
But there is more to books and writing than this. If we think about it, even realistic writing is only 26 . How can we tell the difference between what is real and what is not real? For example, when we read about Harry Potter ,we 2 7 seem to learn something about the real world. And when Harry studies magic at Hogwarts, he also learns more about his real life than 28 . Reading, like writing, is an action. It is a way of 29 . When we read or write something ,we do much more than simple look at words on a page. We use our 30 --which is real—and our imagination—which is real in a different way --- to make the words come to life in our minds.
Both realism and fantasy(幻想) 31 the imagination and the “magic” of reading and writing to make us think. When we read 32 realistic, we have to imagine that the people we are reading about are just like us, even though we 33 that we are real and they are 34 . It sounds 35 ,but it works. When we read, we fill in missing information and 36 about the causes and effects of what a character does. We help the writer by 37 that what we read is like real life. In a way, we are writing the book, too.
Most of us probably don’t think about what is going on in our 38 when we are reading. We pick up a book and lose 39 in a good story, eager to find out what will happen next. Knowing how we feel 40 we read can help us become better readers, and it will help us discover more about the real magic of books.

positive through the cold season could be your best against getting ill, new study findings suggest.
In an experiment that healthy volunteers to a cold or flu virus, researchers found that people with a sunny characteristic were less likely to ill. The findings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, build on evidence that a “positive emotional style” can help the common cold and other illnesses.
Researchers believe the reasons may be both objective as in happiness increasing immune(免疫的) function and subjective as in happy people being less by a scratchy throat or runny nose. “People with a positive emotional style may have different immune to the virus,” explained the lead study author Dr Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. “And when they do get a cold, they may their illness as being less severe.”
Cohen and his colleagues had found in a study that happier people seemed less likely to catch a cold, but some questions remained as to whether the emotional tendency itself had the effect.
For the new study, the researchers had 193 healthy adults with complete standard measures of personality tendency, health-consciousness and emotional “style”. Those who be happy, energetic and easy-going were judged as having a positive emotional style, those who were often unhappy, tense and unfriendly had a negative style. The researchers gave them drops through their noses either a cold virus or a particular flu virus. Over the next six days, the reported on any aches, pains, sneezing they had, while the researchers collected data, like daily mucus(黏液) production. Cohen and his colleagues found that based on objective measures of nasal woes(鼻部的不适), happy people were less likely to develop a cold.

Coming home after working out for a whole day I had my purse lost.I it had slipped out my backpack as I was being .While it was probably very close to my apartment it still failed to come into and I had no but to cancel my debit cards.
I’d had the purse for more than a decade as it was a Christmas present ,which was a bright, red leather, Cheeky Monkey purse ,so probably not entirelyfor a 36-year-old but I was very upset to have lost it!
Everyone I spoke to I might get the purse back but the money and vouchers in it would very likely disappear.I had written off the of the purse and was even considering whether to move on and go “grown-up” when I was seeking a .
I came home late the following night and my monkey purse was on my mat! I checked the contents and everything was including anything of cash value.I was astounded when I read the note which read, “I came across this last night. It was too dark to it then ,so I came back tonight.I got your from your license.Sorry.Iain.”
Not only had this man returned my purse but he thought he me an apology for not bringing it back sooner!
I have told almost all my acquaintances, who almost responded with a similar standard answer, “It restores your in human nature” and it lots of stories about similar experiences.
There were no contact so I am unable to get in touch to say thank you to Iain, but I hope he will be of how grateful I am!
