One cold night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home around one o’clock in the morning after a  1 practice at the theatre. With the opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines by heart. I was having   2 handling my part-time job at the bank in the daytime and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about  3 both acting and San Francisco. I had  4 too much of city life.
As I walked down the  5 streets under the tall buildings, I felt very small and cold, so I began  6 both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my  7 , I heard a sound behind me. I   8  quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me  9 ,so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I   10 what the noise had been. It had been my wallet  11 to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk   12 for 15 minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to quit the  13 , I heard the garbage truck stop to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice came from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened and out jumped a small blonde man with an  14 look in his eyes. “Is this what you’re looking for?” He asked, holding up a wallet.
It was already 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I couldn’t get much sleep, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some  15 of city life. I realized the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

I once had a friend who grew to be close to me. Once when we were sitting on the edge of a swimming pool, she  21  the palm (手掌) of her hand with some water and  22  it before me, saying, “You see the water  23  contained in my hand? It stands for love.”
This was how I saw it:  24  you keep your hand carefully open and allow it to  25  there, it will always be there. However, if you  26  to close your fingers round it and try to  27  it, it will spill through the first cracks(缝隙) it  28  .
Now I see this is the biggest  29  that people make when they meet  30  …they try to possess(拥有,占用) it, they demand, they  31  …and just like the water spilling out of your hand, love will  32 from you. Give, but don’t expect. Advise, but don’t  35  . Ask, but never demand.
It might sound  36  , but it is a lesson that may take a lifetime to  37 . It is the secret to true love. To truly practice it, you must sincerely feel  38  expectations from those who you love.
If you love something, set it free; if it  39 , it’s yours; if it doesn’t, it  40  was.

Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do. Her name is Mrs. White.
I don’t remember much about what we learned in her   36  , but my mother once told me we used to   37   a lot. And I would   38   what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many   39  , but no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a “Good”! That made my heart filled with   40  , but worried my mother. So one day when she met Mrs. White. She asked her why she never   41   my mistakes; why she never red-penciled in the wrong   42   of words or pointed out grammatical errors.
My mother said Mrs. White said “The children are just   43   to get excited about using words, about   44   sentences. I don’t want to dampen that   45   with red ink. Spelling and grammar can   46  . The wonder of words won’t …” And maybe she didn’t   47   it exactly like that because it was a long time ago and   48   my mother told me was just what she could remember.

Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to  26  in order to pay the high tuition for my brother and me. They don’t act in the  27  ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too  28  for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more out of   29  .
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt. I sat down beside her. “Mom, I have a question to ask you. Is there  30  between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice. She didn’t answer immediately. She  31 her head and continued to sew the quilt.

“Susan,” she said thoughtfully, “Look at this thread.Sometimes it  34  , but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt   35  . If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen     36  , but it’s really there. Love is  37 .”
I listened carefully but I  38  her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly  39  seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. “Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.

Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and  44 . But from this experience, I understand that love is just  45  in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

Britain and Ireland
The British Isles is made up of two large islands: One is called Ireland and the other __16  . Britain, or Great Britain, is the larger of these two islands, and it is17  into three parts: Scotland, Wales and England.
The United Kingdom is that 18   of the British Isles ruled over by the Queen. It is made up of Scotland, Wales and England, that is, the 19   of Britain, and also about one sixth of Ireland, the Northern part. The  20  of Ireland is self-governing. The 21  name of the United Kingdom is  22   “The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”.
23  is larger and richer than Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and has the largest  24   of the United Kingdom, so people often use the 25  “England” and “English” when they  26   “Britain” and “British”. This sometimes makes the Scots and the Welsh a little 27  . The Scots in particular are very  28  of their separate nationality. The Welsh too do not regard   29  as English, and have a culture and even a   30 of their own.
Ireland became part of the United Kingdom in 1801, but for forty years the “Irish  31   ” was the greatest headache of the United Kingdom.  32  , Ireland is divided into two: Northern Ireland still  33 to the United Kingdom, and in 1922 the rest of Ireland   34   to found an Irish Free State, later called Eire and now the Republic of Ireland.
The Republic of Ireland does not regard itself as part of Britain, and is not now even a supporter of the Commonwealth of Nations (英联邦). Unlike the major Commonwealth countries it did not lift a finger to   35 British in the Second World War and now wants the whole of Ireland to be a republic.

Last weekends, my kids along with few other kids from the neighborhood volunteered to help me wash my car. My 10-year-old daughter came up with the idea of   31   other people’s cars as well. It was pretty   32   outside and I had no plans to   33   to be in the bright sun. She   34   wanted to give lemonade(柠檬汽水)to passersby for free. I had seen little kids  35   and sell fresh lemonade for a small cost but not free. Although I felt   36   , I decided to help her.  37  she asked me, “What if we   38   this a smile car wash?” I couldn’t hold back my tears and   39   her and the other kids to go outside the house and come up with   40   ideas. While I kept myself busy in drying the car, the gang walked up to me with a(n)   41   with beautiful images of smiles. All that seemed   44   and came right from their heart. Nothing seemed to   45   to them: their playtime, the heat outside—they just wanted to   46   others and do something nice in the community!
I helped them make some fresh lemonade and brought out some additional   47   to help clean cars. The passersby were   48   and one even shouted back to them saying “God Bless You, my kids…” One of them even tried giving them 5 dollars, which they refused. A pretty heartwarming   49  ! That was the  45  of James’s odd-job (零工) business. For three months he worked every day after finishing his homework. He was surprised by the  46   jobs that people found for him to do. He took dogs and babies for walks, cleared out cupboards, and mended books.
