As is known to all, the organization and management of wages and salaries are very complex.
Generally speaking, the Accounts Department is responsible for calculations of pay, while the Personnel Department(人事部) is interested in discussions with the employees about pay.
If a firm wants to adopt a new wage and salary structure, it is essential that the firm should decide on a method of job evaluation(估价) and ways of measuring the performance of its employees. In order to be successful, that new pay structure will need agreement between Trade Unions and employers.
In job evaluation, all the requirements of each job are defined in a detailed job description. Each of those requirements is given a value, usually in “points”, which are added together to give a total value for the job. For middle and higher management, a special method is used to evaluate managers on their knowledge of the job, their responsibility, and their ability to solve problems.
Because of the difficulty in measuring management work, however, job grades for managers are often decided without reference to an evaluation system based on points.
In attempting to design a pay system, the Personnel Department should compare the value of each job with those in the job market. It should also consider economic factors such as the cost of living and the labor supply.
It is necessary that payment for a job should vary with any differences in the way that the job is performed. Where it is simply to measure the work done, as in the work done with the hands, monetary encouragement schemes are often chosen; for indirect workers, where measurement is difficult, methods of additional payments are employed.
If a firm wants to establish a new pay structure, it is necessary to get the agreement between________.

A.the Trade Unions and the Personnel Department
B.the Personnel Department and the Accounts Department
C.the employees and the Trade Unions.
D.the employers and the Trade Unions

What does the words “monetary encouragement schemes” in the last paragraph imply?

A.They are plans in which much payment is encouraged.
B.They are encouraging money schedules
C.They are pay systems
D.They are pay systems to encourage workers in that the more work is done, the more money will be paid.

Methods of additional payments are adopted for indirect workers because________.

A.their work is not important B.they have low wages
C.the measurement of their work is difficult D.the company does not have enough money

Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?

A.In every company only the Accounts Department takes charge of the management of wages and salaries.
B.Management work and the job done by workers can use the same evaluation system.
C.If a job is done differently, the payment for the job should be different too.
D.An evaluation system based on points is usually used to evaluate management work.

The main purpose of the passage is to________.

A.explain the responsibilities of both the Accounts Department and the Personnel Department.
B.explain not to evaluate the performance of a job by points
C.tell readers how a company should adopt a new payment system
D.convince(使确信) readers that management work is more difficult to evaluate than the work done by workers

SOUTHPORT, ENGLAND—A British teaching union famous for strange ideas has supported a plan to employ dogs as classroom assistants.
At the yearly conference of the Professional Association of Teachers in Southport, northwest England, one person suggested properly trained dogs be able to keep order in primary schools. They can round up lost children and protect those who experience unfortunate “accidents”. Wendy Dyble, a Sheetland Islands woman who teaches children up to age seven, made it clear to her fellow friends that she was not “barking mad”. They obviously believed her, supporting her idea by 16 votes to 13, with a total of 63 abstentions(弃权).
She said big dogs could help round up children, keep them in line, lick up the milk they spill on the floor and provide the extra eyes that a teacher needs to keep order. “A big dog would also be helpful for stopping flights and look for lost property, like gym shoes or dolls,” Dyble said at the conference. “The dog will also be useful in sniffing out(find out) smells that children do not own up to,” she added. “It would be nice for the teacher not to have to go round sniffing each child to find the criminal.”
The idea was welcomed by the Dog Defense League but less by bigger teaching unions. A spokesman for Education Secretary, David Blunkett, who is blind, said his guide dog was always popular with pupils when he visited schools. The Professional Association of Teachers, with around 35,000 members, is the smallest teaching union in Britain. It has an honor for occasional strange ideas.
Earlier this week, its yearly conference here suggested stopping exams because they lead to stress and introducing selection at the age of 12 based on physical coordination(调整)and manual(手工的)skill.
According to the writer’s opinion, to employ dogs as classroom assistants ________.

A.is not a good idea
B.can improve the relation between children and animals
C.is beyond ordinary people’s imagination
D.can make some teachers lose jobs

What Dyble said at the conference ________.

A.gained some support from the members
B.frightened everyone present
C.interested everyone present
D.caused some trouble to trained dogs

The last paragraph of this passage ________.

A.has nothing to do with the topic of this passage
B.shows there are too many exams in British school
C.provides further facts about the teaching union
D.shows the writer’s anger to the union

What should you think about when you try to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others, These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at mental work or cookery(烹调术) and look for a job where you can improve these skills.
If you have had a part - time job on Saturday or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part - time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is bitter to face any weaknesses than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not feel sorry about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
The first paragraph of the passage is mainly about ________.

A.the indirect value of school work
B.the importance of being good at all subjects
C.knowing one’s strong or weak subjects at school
D.using school performance to help to choose a career

In the writer’s opinion, for a student to have a part - time job is probably ________.

A.a good way to find out his weak points
B.one of the best ways of earning extra money
C.of great use for his work in the future
D.a waste of time he could have spent on study

If a student’s school record is not good, according to the passage, he________ .

A.may do well in his future work
B.won’t be able to find a suitable job
C.may be a complete failure in the future
D.will regret not having worked harder at school

The whole passage centers around ________.

A.knowing oneself in looking for a job
B.developing one’s abilities useful in school
C.gaining much knowledge by working hard at school
D.choosing a career according to what one is skilled in

The Galapagos a far-away archipelago(群岛) and largely untouched by man, is now facing a problem. Its local people, who live on the island of Santa Cruz, want to develop the business and tourist potential(旅游资源)of the island. Recently, they are locked in a bitter struggle with the naturalists who work at the Charles Darwin Centre, also on Santa Cruz. The naturalists want to protect the island’s wildlife which is already suffering as a result of human activity.
The animals’ great threat used to be sailors who, hundreds of years ago, robbed the islands for food. They wiped out about 250,000 Giant Tortoises. For example, on Pinta, one of the smallest islands, there are no Giant Tortoises left at all. The last survivor, an 80-year-old Giant Tortoise called Lonesome George, lives under the protection of naturalists at the Darwin Centre.
Today, the island’s animals are no longer hunted for food. But other dangers have replaced the threat from sailors. Goats, for example, introduced over the years by man, have gone wild. With no natural enemies, their number has reached 10,000 on the largest of the Galapagos islands, Isabella. They are eating huge quantities of plants, and robbed the remaining Giant Tortoises of food. The problem is now so bad that the National Park Service has hired hunters to kill the goats in order to save the Giant Tortoise from dying out.
Today, you can find the Giant Tortoises on the island of _______.

A.Santa Cruz B.Pinta C.Isabella D.Galapagos

Which of the following shows the right relationship between the Galapagos, Isabella, Pinta and Santa Cruz?

A.The Galapagos>Pinta>Isabella>Santa Cruz
B.Isabella>Santa Cruz>the Galapagos>Pinta
C.The Galapagos>Isabella>Santa Cruz>Pinta
D.Isabella>the Galapagos>Pinta>Santa Cruz

We can learn from the article the greatest danger to the Giant Tortoises is from________.

A.sailors B.hunters C.goats D.the local people

From the first paragraph we can infer that _____.

A.the naturalists try to help the local people with their interest.
B.The local people pay more attention to the economic growth than the wildlife there,
C.The animals and plants are of great importance to the local.
D.The naturalists don’t care about the local people at all

Art is for everyone. Parents can help kids appreciate art by making it available for them. Unfortunately, many adults do not enjoy art simply because they do not understand the stories or context (背景). Actually, children can appreciate art as well as any adult. Here are some simple ways to encourage children to appreciate art.
Find art that will allow children to easily make a connection with their lives. Choose the material according to their ages. Pictures and sculptures of children, for example, or dogs and cats are easily understood, and it is easy to start a conversation about how the themes in the art are connected with familiar people and animals in kids’ lives. Music and dance are very important to children and should also be used.
Explore the stories behind famous, and not so famous, art. Encourage children to make up their own stories about paintings and then research the real story behind the paintings.
Create art with children. Teach them that art is not something that they must only observe but something that they can create. Discuss art with children. Encourage them to express their views on art. Let them know that it is okay to dislike something, and listen to their preferences when planning events.
Visit museums and performances. Explore the artwork in local museums that will interest them. Most cities have children’s theaters and music groups, and often free performances are offered. Many art museums have special tours for children.
Through a variety of artistic experiences, kids will learn how to appreciate art and will enjoy it.

Devra Davis was an American epidemiologist (流行病学家) and writer. In When Smoke Ran Like Water, Devra Davis takes the reader from killer smoke to the serious problems of the present including breast cancer and climate change. Davis has been devoted to decreasing illness and loss of life from environmental pollution for decades. She is determined not to let figures and numbers hide the people whose lives are in danger.

Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.
The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situation-for example, family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.
The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic (the opposite of “temporary”) usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.
Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person’s social contacts, for example, friends, family members, co-workers, etc. we depend on various people for different reasons. For instance, our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their popularity.
Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease, while temporary and situational loneliness can be a sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.
How would you treat temporary loneliness according to the passage?

A.Chronic loneliness can cause family problems.
B.Chronic loneliness can cause serious illness
C.Chronic loneliness can not be overcome.
D.Chronic loneliness is incurable.

What is the best title for the passage?

A.Three kinds of loneliness B.Loneliness and disease

For many years, I was convinced that my suffering was due to my size. I believed that when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts, and rejections with it.
Many weight-conscious people also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything. Perhaps our worst mistake is believing that being thin equals being loved being special, and being cherished. We fantasize about what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal. We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we find ourselves there.
But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally fulfill its promise of everlasting happiness, self-worth, and, of course, love.
It took me a long while to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Beauty standards vary with culture. In Samoa a woman is not considered attractive unless she weighs more than 200 pounds. More importantly, if it’s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us strive hard to change our body, but in vain. We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with and cherish ourselves. When we change our attitudes toward ourselves, the whole world changes.
The passage tries to highlight the importance of _________.

A.body size B.attitudes toward life
C.culture difference D.different beauty standards

A recent study conducted by the Pine Street Foundation showed that a dog’s nose may have the ability to detect cancer. A dog’s nose, which was the “medical device” used as part of the research, is believed to be among the world’s most powerful olfactory(嗅觉的) sensors. The study was conducted with 169 subjects 55 of which had been diagnosed as having lung cancer, 31 have breast cancer and 83 control subjects——people without cancer. During the study, five professionally trained scent dogs were used to distinguish between the breath samples of cancer patients and those who were healthy. With an average of 90% accuracy, the research was deemed a success.
The Pine Street Foundation conducted its research on the belief that cancer cells give off a different type of metabolic(新陈代谢) waste product than normal cells. According to the study, the difference is so great that it can be detected by a dog’s sense of smell, including both early and late stages of the disease.
In the conclusion of the study the Pine Street Foundation said that even ordinary dogs may be trained to identify the presence of cancer with only a breath sample. The organization also said that dogs can recognize the disease with astonishing amount accuracy and, finally, that the dog’s detection was not hindered(妨碍) by the presence of age, smoking or stage of cancer.
The Pine Street Foundation plans to continue their research and is currently seeking funding to launch new studies.

Student participation in the classroom is not only accepted but also expected of the student in many courses. Some professors base part of the final grade on the student’s oral participation. Although there are formal lectures during which the student has a passive role (i.e., listening and taking notes), many courses are organized around classroom discussions, student questions, and informal lectures. In graduate discussions the professor had a “manager” role and the students make presentations and lead discussions. The students do the actual teaching in these discussions.
A professor’s teaching method is another factor that determines the degree and type of student participation. Some professors prefer to control discussions while others prefer to guide the class without controlling it. Many professors encourage students to question their ideas. Students who object to the professor’s point of view should be prepared to prove their positions.
In the teaching of science and mathematics, the controlling mode of instruction is generally traditional, with teachers presenting formal lectures and students taking notes. However, new educational trends have turned up in the humanities and social sciences in the past twenty years. Students in education, society, and history classes, for example, are often required to solve problems in groups, design projects, make presentations, and examine case studies. Since some college or university courses are “practical” rather than theoretical, they pay more attention to “doing” for themselves.
“Participation in the classroom is not only accepted but also expected of the student” in  ____
class.

A.the humanities and social sciences B.the science and mathematics
C.the theoretical lessons D.the strictly controlled courses

From the passage we know that education in the humanities and society __________.

A.has not changed much in the past twenty years
B.pay attention to students’ studying instead of teachers’ teaching
C.is much more important than that of science and mathematics
D.has become more practical than theoretical.

The reason why some professors ask students to make presentations and lead discussions is that __________.

A.these professors are often not well prepared before class
B.these professors want to stress “doing”
C.these professors want to test the students abilities
D.these professors are not willing to teach theory

Which of the following sentences is true according to the passage?

A.Student participation is not common in many courses like society and history classes.
B.Some professors want to control the classroom discussion.
C.Some of students are wanted to attend the lecture of science and mathematics.
D.New educational trends have turned up in the teaching of natural sciences such as

It is difficult for parents of nearly every family to teach their children to be responsible (有责任的)for housework, but with one of the following suggestions, you really can get your children to help at home.
If you give your children the impression that they can never do anything quite right, then they will regard themselves as unfit or unable persons. Unless children believe they can succeed, they will never become totally independent.
My daughter Carla’s fifth - grade teacher made every child in her class feel special. When students received less than a prefect test score, she would point out what they had mastered and declared firmly they could learn what they had missed.
You can use the same technique when you evaluate (评价)your child’s work at home. Don’t always scold and give lots of praise instead. Talk about what he has done right, not about what he hasn’t done. If your child completes a difficult task, promise him a Sunday trip or a ball game with Dad.
Learning is a process(过程)of trying and failing and trying and succeeding. If you teach your children not to fear a mistake of failure, they will learn faster and achieve success at last.
The whole passage deals with ________.

A.social education B.school education
C.family education D.pre - school education

The author thinks that________.

A.there is no way to get children to help at home
B.the more encouragement and praise you give, the more responsible and helpful children will become
C.it is very difficult to make children responsible for housework
D.children can be forced to help with housework

The article gives us a good suggestion about how to evaluate(评价)your child’s work at home. That is to ________.

A.praise his success B.promise him a trip
C.give him a punishment D.promise him a ball game

The author advises readers to________.

A.learn from himself, for he has a good way of teaching
B.take pride in Carla’s fifth - grade teacher
C.do as what Carla’s teacher did in educating children
D.follow Carla’s example because she never fails in the test

Having read the last paragraph, we can conclude that ________.

A.pride goes before a fall
B.practice makes perfect
C.no pains, no gains
D.failure is the mother of success

Rumour(谣言)is the most primitive way of spreading stories--- by passing them on from mouth to mouth. but civilized countries in normal times have better sources  of news than rumour. They have radio, television, and newspapers. In times of confusion(混乱), however, rumour appears and becomes widespread. At such times the different kinds of news are in competition: the press, television, and radio against the grapevine.
Especially do rumours spread when war requires control on many important matters. The normal news sources no longer give out enough information. Since the people can not learn through legal channels all that they are anxious to learn, they pick up "news" wherever they can and when this happens, rumour grows.
Rumours are often repeated even by those who do not believe the tales. There is an interest about them. The reason is that the cleverly designed rumour gives expression to something  deep in the hearts of the victims --- the fears, doubts, forbidden hopes, or daydreams which they hesitate to voice directly. Pessimistic(悲观的)rumours about defeat and disasters show that the people who repeat them are worried and anxious .Optimistic rumours about record production or peace soon coming point to self- satisfaction or confidence---and often to over- confidence.
