Tips for Being a Good Neighbor
_______________
No one likes a noisy neighbor. Do you hold parties that last all night? Do you leave your dog outside to bark all day? Remember that not everyone has the same schedule as you do, so use some common sense. Keep noise to the lowest level. If you’re holding a party that’s likely to be loud, invite everyone within earshot.
_________________
It’s much easier to solve any problem with neighbors if you have a friendly relationship with those around you. Furthermore, you may realize that you have things in common and make a lifelong friend.
__________________
Once you know your neighbors, then you’ll also know if something seems out of place in the neighborhood. Are strange people carrying expensive things out of one neighbor’s house? Have several days passed since your elderly neighbor last collected his newspaper? The benefit of keeping an eye out for unusual behavior in the neighborhood is that others will do the same for you.
___________________
It never hurts to follow the Golden Rule: Do to others what you would like them to do to you. Treat your neighbors with respect. Offer to drive an elderly neighbor to the grocery store. Volunteer to collect mail while a neighbor is on vacation. The more often you lend a helping hand, the more likely that your neighbors will do the same for you when you need a little help.
_____________________
Don’t just limit your neighborly actions to your block or street. Remember that everyone who lives in a community has the ability to help make it a better place. Think about your passion and find a way to do it on a volunteer basis in your town. Volunteer at the local library. Enjoy working with kids. Consider becoming a scout leader. Whatever your passion is, there’s sure to be a thing suitable for you to help in the local community.

下面文章中有4个段落需要添加小标题,文章需要添加总标题。请从以下选项(A、B、C、 D、E和F)中选出符合意思的标题,并在答题纸上将相应选项的标号涂黑。选项中有一项是多余选项。
A. Keep Your Voice Low All the Time
B. Put Yourself in the Boss’s Position
C. Propose Your Solution
D. Don’t Go in When You Are Angry
E. Make the Issue Clear
F. How to Argue with Your Boss
_______________________
Before you argue with your boss, check with the boss’s secretary to determine his mood. If he ate nails for breakfast, it is not a good idea to ask him for something. Even without the boss’s secretary, there are keys to timing: don’t approach the boss when he’s on deadline; don’t go in right before lunch, when he is apt to be distracted and rushed; don’t go in just before or after he has taken a vacation.
_____________________
If you’re mad, that will only make your boss mad. Calm down first. And don’t let a particular concern open the floodgates for all your accumulated frustration. The boss will feel that you think negatively about the company and it is hopeless trying to change your mind. Then, maybe he will dismiss you.
_____________________
Terrible disputes can result when neither the employer nor the employee knows what is the problem the other wants to discuss. Sometimes the fight will go away when the issues are made clear. The employee has to get his point across clearly in order to make the boss understand it.
_____________________
Your boss has enough on his mind without your adding more. If you can’t put forward an immediate solution, at least suggest how to approach the problem. People who frequently present problems without solutions to their boss may soon find they can’t get past the secretary.
_____________________
To deal effectively with a boss, it’s important to consider his goals and pressures. If you can put yourself in the position of being a partner to the boss, then he will be naturally more inclined to work with you to achieve your goals.

根据短文内容,从下框的A---F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。 选项中有一项为多余选项。
A. Current reviews and suggestions
B. Commercial pressures on people in charge
C. Mixed views on current changes to museums
D. Collections of factual evidence
E. Interpreting the facts to meet visitor expectations
F. Fewer differences between public attractions

It was convinced that historical relics provide evidence about the past. Such conviction was, until recently, reflected in museum displays. Museums used to look - and some still do - much like storage rooms of objects packed together in showcases: good for scholars to study, but not for the average visitor, to whom it all looked alike.

Recently, however, attitudes towards history and the way it should be presented have become different. The key word in heritage display is now ‘experience’, the more exciting the better and, if possible, involving all the senses. On so called heritage sites computers will soon provide reality experiences, which will present visitors with a vivid image of the period of their choice, in which they themselves can act as if part of the historical environment. Such developments have been criticized by some experts, but the success of many historical theme parks suggests that the majority of the public does not share this opinion.

In a related development, the sharp distinction between museum and heritage sites on the one hand, and theme parks on the other is gradually evaporating(蒸发). They already borrow ideas and concepts from one another. For example, museums have adopted storylines for exhibitions, sites have accepted ‘theming’ as a relevant tool, and theme parks are moving towards more realness and research-based presentations.

Theme parks are undergoing other changes, too, as they try to present more serious social and cultural issues, and move away from fantasy. This development is a response to market forces and exhibits must be both based on artifacts and facts as we know them, and attractively presented. Those who are professionally working in the art of interpreting(诠释) history are thus in a difficult position, as they must manage a narrow course between the demands of ‘evidence’ and ‘attractiveness’, especially given the increasing need in this industry for income making activities.

It could be claimed that in order to make everything in heritage more ‘real’, historical accuracy must be increasingly changed. For example, in the Museum of Natural History in Washington, Neanderthal man is shown making a commanding gesture to his wife. Such presentations tell us more about contemporary understandings of the world than about our ancestors. In fact if the professionals did not provide the interpretation, visitors would do it for themselves, based on their own ideas, misconceptions and prejudices. And no matter how exciting the result, it would contain a lot more bias(偏见) than the presentations provided by experts.

Choosing to Study Overseas
Every year, thousands of students choose to study in another country for a semester, the summer, or a year. Studying overseas can be an exciting experience for many people.

Living in another country can help you to learn a language, and about another culture.
Overseas study may also look good on your future resume. Many companies today want employees who speak a second language, or have experienced living or working in another country.
Making the right choice

A. Travel as often as possible
B. Provide great value to the world
C. Work hard and face great challenges
D. Make the very best of every situation
E. Spend time with friends who improve you
F. Work on something every day that moves you

Everyone hopes to live a long life. But how can you make your long life happy and meaningful? You can read on to find answers.
Go traveling wherever you want and go to see one part of the world you’ve never seen before. You will not regret it. Traveling has less to do with seeing things, as it does with experiencing them. It has less to do with discovering something, as it does with discovering yourself. You run into all the good things and bad things about yourself on a daily basis if you travel to new places, and you are provided with the opportunity to grow far beyond your years.
You can go through life and make new friends anytime, but no one can take the place of those persons who truly improve you. They are the most important people you will ever meet because they tear down the invisible walls you have built in your mind. In other words, they come into your life and help you develop your potential that you would never have been aware of without them.
The road to greatness is far from easy. You can be absolutely certain that when you feel you are getting weaker from struggle, you are in fact growing stronger than you ever have been before. The more difficulties you meet and solve on your lifelong journey, the more meaningful your life story will be.
One of the great secrets of happiness is freedom, and the secret of freedom is doing the best you can with what it done to you. It’s all about how you choose to respond to different situations. This simple choice makes a world of difference. If you find your situations tolerable, by all means tolerate them; if you find them intolerable, break through them. Eventually you are free because you alone are responsible for your thoughts and how you use them to improve your growth.
The best way to get ahead in this world is not to complete with others, but to serve them. If you want to get a promotion at work, be good to your boss. If you want to build a successful business, be of service to your potential customers. Provide unmistakable value. Value is what makes relationships, businesses, and personal efforts grow. At any age, in any situation, for every possible life path, there is value you can provide. Success and happiness will come when you choose to work for the world.

There is distinction between reading for information and reading for understanding. _________
The first sense is the one in which we read newspapers, magazines, or anything else. _________ Such materials may increase our store of information, but they cannot improve our understanding. And clearly we don’t have any difficulty in gaining the new information, for our understanding was equal to them before we started. Otherwise, we would have felt the shock of puzzlement.
The second sense is the one in which we read something that at first we do not completely understand. Here the thing to be read is at the first sight better or higher than the reader. The writer is communicating something that can increase the reader’s understanding. __________ Otherwise one person could never learn from another. Here “learning” means understanding more, not remembering more information.
What are the conditions in this kind of reading? First, there is inequality in understanding. __________ Besides, his book must convey something he possesses and his potential readers lack. Second, the reader must be able to overcome this inequality in some degree. And he should always try to reach the same level of understanding with the writer. If the equality is approached, success of communication is achieved.
__________ It is the least demanding and requires the least amount of effort. Everyone who knows how to read can read for entertainment if he wants to. In fact, any book that can be read for understanding or information can probably be read for entertainment as well.

A.The writer should have a better communicating skill.
B.Such communication between unequals must be possible.
C.We can get access to the content of those materials easily.
D.The writer must be “superior” to the reader in understanding.

E. Thus, we can employ the word “reading” in two distinct senses.
F. Reading for entertainment is capable of increasing our understanding for information.
G. Besides gaining information and understanding, there’s another goal of reading—entertainment.

How to Avoid Weight Gain Over Holidays
Do you love the holidays, but hate the pounds that follow? You are not alone. Holidays are times for feasting and celebrating. Many people are worried about their weight.    Whether you are celebrating at the office party or sitting down for the traditional family dinner, regard eating as a time for tasting a variety of foods. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don’t have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy.
Here are some tips for preventing weight gain and maintaining physical fitness:
Don’t skip meals.
Before you leave home, have a small, low-fat meal or snack.
Control portions.
Use a small plate (about 10 inches) and put aside the large ones that may encourage you to “load up.”   Once you have your “tasting” serving, move away from the dining table. Doing so will make it less tempting (吸引人的) to be eating constantly as your appetite is inspired by the sight of food.
Begin with soup and fruit or vegetables.
Fill up beforehand with water-based soup and raw fruit or vegetables. Or drink a large glass of water before you eat to help you feel full.
Stick to physical activity.
_A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn off additional calories.
__ Dishes that look oily or creamy may have a large amount of fat. Choose lean meats. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables. Use lemon juice instead of dressing or butter.

A.This may help to avoid getting too excited before delicious food.
B.You had better turn your attention away from delicious foods.
C.With proper planning, though, it is possible to keep normal weight during the holidays.
D.You should be most comfortable eating an amount of food about the size of your fist.

E. Avoid high-fat foods.
F. Don’t let exercise take a break during the holidays.
G. You’d better remember the Dos and Don’ts for keeping fit and slim.

Teen peer pressure
Teen peer pressure is the influence a teen's social group has on him or her. As adolescents enter the teen years, they usually begin to focus more on their peers or friends.    Peers influence most aspects of a teen's life, including how teens dress, what music they listen to, and what kind of activities they are involved in.
Good friends can encourage teens to do well in school, get involved in positive activities, volunteer, eat healthy foods, and avoid drugs, alcohol, and other risky activities. Friends also help teens learn good social skills and better ways to communicate and work out problems.
Negative peer pressure is when teens feel pressured to do something they know is wrong, such as smoking, drinking, stealing, or cutting class.   This is because they want to be liked or fit in, they are afraid of being made fun of, or they want to try something other teens are doing.
It is important for teens to learn how to deal with peer pressure. There are a lot of things a teen can do to handle it.  Good friends use positive peer pressure to help you be your best self.  Also you need to think about the consequences of your decisions and actions, such as if an activity might harm your health or get you into trouble.  Or you can talk to your parents or a trusted adult about the kinds of peer pressure you face and listen to their advice. Remember that if just one teen stands up against negative peer pressure, usually others will join him or her, and learning to handle peer pressure gives teens more confidence.

A.Peer pressure is not always bad.
B.They always give teens good advice.
C.Teens may give in to negative peer pressure.
D.Why it is important to deal with negative peer pressure?

E. First of all, teens need to recognize negative peer pressure.
F. For example, you can choose good friends who share your values.
G. The desire to fit in with peers can be a very strong influence on teens.

America is a country that was established by all the immigrants that came to settle there. The original settlers in America are the Indian-Americans who have been living there for thousands of years already, even before Christopher Columbus discovered it. Many people wonder the answer to the question why Mexican immigrants came to America.

The first answer to the question, why immigrants came to America is that most of them came to be saved from getting persecuted from a religious and get freedom. The Irish immigrants were just like some of the Mexican immigrants who came because they were afraid of getting persecuted(迫害) by the England church.

The second answer to the question, why Mexican immigrants came to America is to escape famine(饥荒)from Mexico. A big famine happened in the eighteenth century. A lot of people had no food and were starved to death so that they had to leave.

The third answer to the question, why Mexican immigrants came to America is to find good opportunities for a job. Many workers were needed when America was starting because many infrastructures were needed to be built. Many of them became farmers and carpenters. The fourth answer to the question, why Mexican immigrants came to America is that they wanted to seek adventure. Many people from other countries including Mexico had heard of the new found land and they wanted to see it for adventure. Many of them liked what they saw in America and decided to settle there permanently.
