We carry umbrellas on rainy days and, sometimes, sunny days. Who invented umbrellas? The Chinese invented them a long time ago.
Believe it or not, the Chinese used paper to make umbrellas. First, they painted birds an flowers on paper. Next, they put oil on the paper to keep off the rain. They used bamboo to make the head, ribs and handle. Then they used cotton thread to tie the ribs in place.
Some people used silk and bamboo to make umbrellas. There were beautiful pictures on them, too. Girls liked to carry them because they protected them from the sun. They were also great as decorations.
Nowadays, some people in China still use these umbrellas.
