Animals, including insects, don't have a "language" like ours. They do not "talk" to each other in words and sentences. But if we watch them, we can see that they do have their ways of communicating with each other.
Can you see the rabbit's tail? When rabbits see this white tail moving up and down, they run away. They know that they are in danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal.
Many other animals use this kind of "language". When a cobra is angry, it raises its head and makes itself look fierce. This warns other animals. When a bee has found food, it goes back to its home. It cannot "tell" the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance. This tells the bees where the food is.
Some animals "say" things by making sound. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs when it is pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning. Sometimes we human beings speak in the same way. We make sound like "Oh" or "Ah" when we are frightened or pleased or when we drop something on our toes.A rabbit uses its tail to ________.

China's first moon rover (月球车), Yutu, set off from the lander(登陆车) early on December 15, several hours after the Chang'e-3 probe (探测器) soft-landed on the moon surface.
The 140 kg six-wheeled rover touched the moon surface at 4:35 a.m., leaving deep lines on the loose moon land. This was recorded by the camera on the lander and the images were sent to the earth, according to the Beijing Aerospace Control Center. After that, the rover and lander will take photos of each other and start their own science explorations.
Earlier this morning, engineers made final checks of the environment of the landing area and the situation of the probe(探测仪). Yutu, reached its solar panel (光板) and started to drive slowly to the moon at 3:10 a.m.. It took Yutu nearly a whole hour to complete the simple task.

Would you like to adopt an animal? Although this sounds very unusual, some children have done just this. The Natural Zoo has given people the chance to adopt animals by paying for all of its food for one year. One of the animals that needed parents was a young tiger named Brocky. The people at the zoo said that it would cost about $900 a year for the food for Brocky.
Not many boys and girls have $900 to spend. That is why several hundred children and grown-ups each have sent a little money to the zoo to help pay for Brocky’s food. Some children sent in only a quarter because that was all the money they had. Other children sent in more money than that.
Since so many people sent money to the zoo to help pay for Brocky’s food, he now will be able to eat as much as he wants. Brocky surely must be a happy tiger to know that he has so many adopted parents. Many children must also be happy to know that they have helped to feed him. It really will be thrilling for those children to go to the Natural Zoo to visit their adopted tiger Brocky.

The engineer Camillo Oliver was 40 years old when he started the company in 1908. At his factory in Ivrea, he designed and produced the first Italian typewriter(打字机). Today the company's head office is still in Ivrea, near Turin, but the company is much larger than it was in those days and there are offices all around the world.
By 1930 the company had 700 workers and it turned out 13,000 machines a year. Some went to offices and homes in Italy, but more typewriters were sold to other countries.
Camillo's son, Adriano, started working for the company in 1924 and later he became the boss. The production(生产) line was improved a lot and some top engineers in technology and design fields worked for him. The company developed new and better typewriters. More and more people became interested in their products. In 1959 it produced the ELEA computer system. This was the first mainframe(主机) computer designed and made in Italy.
After Adriano died in 1960, the company had a period of financial(财政) problems. Other companies, especially the Japanese, made faster progress in electronic technology than the Italian company.
In 1978, Carlo de Benedetti became the new boss. Olivetti increased its marketing and service networks and made agreements with other companies to design and produce better office equipment(设备). Soon it became one of the world's leading companies in information technology and communications. There are now five companies in the Olivetti group---one for personal computers, one for other office equipment, one for systems and services, and two for telecommunications.

The Vieira family moved to the United States in 1981. At that time, they decided to stop speaking Spanish at home and only communicate in English. This was because they were now living in an English-speaking country.
Now the Vieira children are adults, and they sometimes travel to Spain to visit their family and friends. But they cannot communicate with them. Unfortunately this is common. When people move to new countries, they often leave their own customs and mother language behind. This is a mistake because there are many benefits to knowing more than one language.
One advantage of speaking more than one language is that you can communicate directly with more people around the world. You do not have to depend on others to talk for you, so you’re more independent. People who know only one language must use others to help them communicate.
Furthermore, speaking a second language also allows people to experience other cultures and customs more effectively. Local expressions, vocabulary, and even jokes can have a powerful effect on a person’s understanding of another culture. So, knowing more than one language increases your knowledge of other cultures.
Finally, having more multi-language speakers improves relationships between countries. If people from different countries can communicate well, the world can become closer. Countries will then have more respect for each other and better understand each other’s problems.
The benefits of knowing more than one language are clear. In fact, there are no disadvantages. It is very sad that many people don’t try to learn another language. It is even worse when people let themselves forget their mother language and become silenced.
What is the passage mainly about?
A.The benefits of learning other languages. |
B.The reasons why people come to America. |
C.The importance of learning English. |
D.How to learn another language. |
The passage begins with the experience of the Vieira family in order to_______.
A.discuss the need for teaching a new language |
B.introduce the passage’s main characters to the readers |
C.describe the advantages of moving to another country |
D.show the problems of speaking only one language |
The underlined phrase “multi-language speakers” (Paragraph 5) means “people who know ______.”
A.their mother language | B.a new language |
C.more than one language | D.body language |
According to the passage, if you can speak more than one language, you can____.
A.find a better job |
B.make more friends |
C.better understand history |
D.communicate more independently |
Based on the last paragraph, which of the following is the worst?
A.Not knowing another language. |
B.Forgetting one’s mother language. |
C.Refusing to learn another language. |
D.Failing to communicate with others. |
My friend, Victor, is a zoo keeper in the National Zoo. His work is very interesting but it is hard. Sometimes it is dangerous, too. Every morning the zoo keepers have to get up at five to prepare the food for the animals. Each kind of animal is given special food. For example, the lions must be given meat; the deer must be given grass and leaves; and the parrots must be given fruit and nuts. Sometimes some animals won’t let the others eat their food. If this happens, each of them must be fed separately (分离地).
Every morning each cage must be washed by the zoo keepers. This can be dangerous, especially with lions and tigers. To make the work easier, the animals are locked in the sleeping compartments (隔间) while the cages are being washed. When the animals are sick, the zoo keepers must look after them. Each sick animal is kept in a separate cage and given medicine. Sometimes they must be given injections. It is not easy to inject a sick lion!
All the keepers live near the zoo. Each of them has a small house. There he lives with his family. They do not have holidays on Sundays and public holidays. Instead, each of them has a day off during the week. Each keeper has a holiday on a different day from that of the other keepers.
The most important job of the keepers is to look after the safety of the visitors. People must be prevented from doing dangerous things. Many people have been injured because they did careless things, like putting their hands into the lion’s cage.

However, we human beings are polluting water seriously. In some areas of China, people are still in great need of clean water. Dirty water is one of the world’s biggest healthy problems. It’s harmful to our health. When water from the rain and melting(融化) snow runs through roads, it picks up some dangerous chemicals and other things along the way.
