Nowadays, many people in China and Japan are racing against time. They put a lot of value in "being on time". However, in some countries of the world, people have different opinions on "being on time".

Germany

Thanks to its industrial past, in Germany you are expected to arrive at least ten minutes earlier for any planned meeting.

In Germany, being on time is risky enough because your hosts will probably already be there waiting, wondering how on earth you could be so stupid. What will you do if anything unexpected happens, like heavy traffic or a sudden rain? So remember to arrive early in Germany.

Saudi Arabia

Some countries care little about time and Saudi Arabia is one of them. It's because of their long history of desert living where time is not the first thing to think about. It could be that it's too hot to do anything on time. So don't expect them to be on time. Moreover, looking at your watch during an event is even considered as bad manners. So don't get angry with them, either.

Ghana

Most meeting times can be changed, even if an exact time is given, Ghanaians are very relaxed and easygoing. They think that if everyone is late, then no one is late. After all, what can't be done today can get done tomorrow. If you find it difficult to deal with, prepare to be unhappy. Otherwise, sit back enjoy the ride.

Russia

Patience is considered a very important quality in Russian culture but being on time is not. When doing business in Russia, do be on time. Otherwise, it will be considered disrespectful. But Russians won't hold themselves to the same standard. So, again, patience can be key.

Emperor penguins are the largest penguins on Earth. Each adult is over a metre tall, and can weigh up to 40 kilograms.

For many months each year, emperors live near the sea in large groups called colonies. However, in May, the weather gets colder and ice covers large areas of ocean. Each colony moves many kilomtres from the water.

    Sharing the work

There, each mother penguin lays just one egg. Then all the hungry mothers must walk back to the ocean to find food. The father penguins put their eggs on top of the feet, under a special piece of skin called the brood pouch. For two months, the father penguins keep the eggs safe and warm. Antarctica. Most animals leave for warmer places, but the father penguins stay. In this time, without food, a father penguin can lose almost half of his weight.

    New life

Then the babies begin to hatch! The mother penguin returns just in time to see her baby come out of its egg. The chick is then moved to her bored pouch. This can be difficult. If the chick falls, it can freeze quickly, so the penguin parents must be very careful! Once this is done, the father penguin can go back to the ocean to find food.

    Growing up

Over the next few months, penguin parents take turns to go to the ocean for food. They each make the trip several times, bringing back food for the chick. The chick grows quickly and is always hungry.

    Into the water

By December, winter is ending. The chick is five months old and can live on its own. Soon it enters the water for the first time. It will swim and eat until next April, and then return here. After a few more years, it, too, will start its own family.

There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls' rights to go to school.

Britons are well known for drinking tea. The average (典型的) person in the UK drinks around 1.9 kg of tea every year. That's around 876 cups of tea. Tea is drunk by all levels of society. But tea does not grow in Britain. Most tea grows in India and China. So, how did it become an important part of British culture?

Tea arrived in London in the 1600s. At this time, British ships were exploring the world and came across the drink in China. It was not long before green tea could be bought from the market. However, it was only for the rich people.

At the beginning of the 1700s, the amount(数量)of tea arriving in Britain increased rapidly. Black tea arrived at this time. At first this tea served exactly as it was in China. They soon discovered that it mixed really well with a little milk and sugar, giving the drink a special British colour.

In the 1800s, tea was still a product enjoyed only by people with money. At this time they began to have "afternoon tea". They drank tea with a snack around 4 pm to avoid feeling hungry between lunch and dinner. It is a tradition that is still going today but has become less popular in recent times.

In 1845, a deadly disease struck the farms of Ireland, killing all the Lumper potato plants. In another place or time, the death of single crop species (物种) might not have been so important. But in Ireland, in 1845, people depended almost solely on the potato for food. The death of one species caused a terrible famine(饥荒). Now, some scientists are worried that such a famine could happen again, but on a much wider scale.

Over the centuries, farmers have discovered thousands of different species of food crops. Each species has special qualities. Some can be grown in very hot or cold climates. Others are not affected by certain diseases. However, you won't find many of these species in your local supermarket. To feed the seven billion people on Earth, most farmers today are growing only species of plants and farming only species of animals that are easy to produce in large numbers.

For example, in the Philippines, there were once thousands of varieties of rice: now fewer than 100 are grown there. In China, 90 percent of the wheat varieties grown just a century ago have disappeared. Scientists believe that over the past century, we have allowed more than half of the world's food varieties to disappear.

One solution to this problem is to collect and store the seeds (种子) as many different plant varieties as we can before they disappear. The idea was first suggested by Russian scientist Nikolay Vavilov. In the 1920s and 1930s, he collected around 400,000 seeds from five continents. More recently, others are continuing the work he began.

In the U.S. state of Iowa, Diane Ott Whealy wanted to protect historic plant varieties, like the seeds her great ﹣grandfather brought to the U.S. from Germany more than a hundred years ago. She and her husband started a place called Heritage Farm, where people can store and trade seeds.

More importantly, the people at Heritage Farm don't just store the seeds; they plant them. By doing this, they are reintroducing foods into the marketplace that haven't been grown for years. These food species are not just special in terms of appearance or taste. They also offer farmers food solutions for the future, from the past.

(1)What is this passage mainly about?

A. The need to protect different food species.

B. How to increase the number of food species.

C. The fact that many food species are dying out.

D. How to prevent food species from disappearing.

(2)Why are some scientists worried that such a famine could happen again?

A. Because people depend on certain species of food crops.

B. Because the same deadly disease may attack crops again.

C. Because the world's population is larger than that in 1845.

D. Because farmers grow the same potatoes as those in the past.

(3)The following sentence would best be placed at the end of .Meanwhile, thousands of other species are dying out.

A. Paragraph 1

B. Paragraph 2

C. Paragraph 3

D. Paragraph 4

(4)What can we learn from the passage?

A. The disease spread very quickly and killed thousands of people in Ireland.

B. Around 80 percent of the rice varieties in the Philippines have disappeared.

C. People have been storing seeds to save plane varieties for less than 100 years.

D. Heritage Farm is the first place in the U.S. for people to store and trade seeds.

Each year on Feb 21, UNESCO ( 联合国教科文组织) holds an International Mother Language Day (IMLD ). The event is to help people to pay attention to the disappearance of the world's languages; many of them are disappearing each year. UNESCO sees this as a terrible fact.

What happens when a language dies out? Something great is lost﹣not just sounds and marks but the way that people understand the world and communicate with each other. We keep different cultures and traditions through languages. Kill a language and all these are killed too.

alive are not limited to the past. Many young people design apps and use social media to support their activities. They "spread the word " to save the world.

One cannot discuss Chinese music without mentioning the Chinese seven﹣string zither (七弦琴) , also known as the guqin, one of the four arts ﹣ along with go, calligraphy and painting. It first appeared over 3, 000 ago and represents China's solo musical instrument tradition.

Both language and music play a huge role in our culture. Here are some of their similarities.

(1)Both language and music have a writing system.

In English we record language using letters. Similarly, we use notes to record music. Just as you are reading letters and find meaning in them, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music. So just as you read English, you can read music. Even if you don't like British pop music, you may love the energy of Latin American salsa music.

   (3)Both share feelings.

How do you know that I am angry? Of course you can see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words, Similarly, music can show you exactly how the composer (作曲者) was or is feeling. When I'm happy, I want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate my happiness; and I listen to slow and quiet music when I'm feeling down. I think we have all used music to express our feelings, often combining (结合)it with language in the form of song lyrics.

Do you shop online with websites like Taobao? The money you pay doesn't go directly to the seller. Instead, it goes through Alipay, which keeps your money for a while. After you receive your goods and click the "confirm receipt" button, Alipay then gives the money to the seller.

The process is called "third party online payment". There is a transfer station, or a third account, between sellers and buyers to make online shopping safe.     Bangladesh(孟加拉) is an agricultural country between India and Burma. Storms from the Indian Ocean sweep across the country every year, and large areas of farming land are flooded(冲毁). The people are very poor.

Fewer than half of the country's children complete their primary education. When they are six or seven years old, many children leave school to work in the fields or at home. The rest of their "education" consists of looking after cattle, collecting firewood or doing household jobs.

Not long ago, an experimental school was opened near the capital, Dacca, to help poor children. There are only 120 children in the school, which has three classrooms. In each class, forty pupils are divided into four groups of ten. Each pupil is free to decide which group he or she wants to join.

The most able pupils do a great deal of the teaching. They act as group monitors. Their duty is to ensure that all pupils in their group understand and practice what the teacher has taught.

There are a number of unusual features in the Bangladesh school. Children do not move up a class automatically when they grow older. Each group is promoted (升级)only when EVERY pupil in it has succeeded in getting to the right standard. As a result, all members of a group work hard to help the less able pupils. Nobody is left behind.

Lessons are extremely practical and include work on farming, carpentry, health and running a home﹣as well as lessons on the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic. At school, pupils prepare for adult life by learning to carry out almost all the tasks which they will face when they grow older.

If pupils have to look after cattle or young children, they are allowed to bring them to school. If a child has to stay at home to help his parents, there is no scolding or punishment (责罚) at school. Children enjoy their lessons and the school is cheap to run. It is so successful that other schools in Bangladesh are beginning to imitate(模仿) its methods.

Visitors are even coming from other agricultural countries to see if they can use a similar method.

(1)Many people in Bangladesh work on farms.

(2)Most children in Bangladesh complete their primary education.

(3)In each group, the biggest or oldest pupil is made a monitor.

(4)At the end of each school year, all the pupils move to a higher class.

(5)At school, pupils learn to do almost all the tasks needed in adult life.
