You might not think much about where your garbage goes. But now you might want to know.On July 1,Shanghai introduced a new garbage﹣sorting policy (垃圾分类政策).People there need to put different kinds of garbage into different bins. Other cities in China will do the same soon.
Garbage sorting is a big problem because there is too much garbage these days.It is bad for our environment. In fact, we can make use of some garbage again. But first, we need to sort it.
For example, if you put an old battery (电池) into the "harmful waste" bin, people can use it to make new batteries. But if you don't, the battery will end up somewhere else. Then, it will pollute the environment.

Japan: A truck playing music comes to people's doors to pick up their garbage. There are eight or more kinds of garbage. If you sort any of them wrong, you will get a notice on your door.
Indonesia: People can take buses for free if they give plastic bottles to bus stations. An hour﹣long bus ride costs three large bottles.
Four kinds of garbage in Shanghai

In the eyes of many foreigners,Chinese are the best hosts and the worst guests in the world. They're not really bad guests, but because the guest﹣host relationship(关系) in China is much different than in some western countries. It seems that they are not nice guests. And western guests sometimes look rude in the eyes of Chinese guests.
In China, guests are almost like gods(上帝).Whenever I enter a Chinese person's home, there is always fruit on the table for me,and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the west, generally the guest is not a god.Acting according to(根据) the host's way of doing things is usual behavior for a guest.
My wife's mother,a very kind elderly Chinese lady, doesn't smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house,as a non﹣smoker,I feel unhappy.Usually I want to stop them directly(直接地),but I must realize that in China,to be a good host, she must not do that.In most North America homes,if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At the very least, you could ask,"Is it OK if I smoke?"But don't besurprised if the hosts say,"No,you can't smoke."In our culture,if you smoke in their home, you are a bad guest, but if they don't allow you to smoke in their house, they are not a rude host.
Guests in China also have special habits. Some western people may not adapt tothese habits very soon.Thankfully my wife is Chinese,so whenever we visit a Chinese family she tells me to buy them a gift. However, giving a gift to a host is not always necessary in my country. So,if you invite international guests to your home, don't be too surprised if they don't bring you a gift.
In China, you probably won't need to change the guest﹣host relationship very much because you will probably only be the host, and Chinese are naturally very good hosts. If western hosts invite you to their house, try not to be too surprised if their style of treating you is not what you have expected.

Smoking is a bad habit. |

What's in a Name?
Many American names come from England. But where did most English names come from?
Centuries ago, most people in England had only one name﹣﹣their first name.In the 11th century, five
or six of the 50 people in a village might be named William, and it was easy to get confused. But in the Middle Ages, people found a way to describe each person exactly. If there were four Williams in one village, one might be referred to as William the son of John.A second might be called William from the hill.A third,William the blacksmith(铁匠).And a fourth,William the brown haired. In conversation, people might refer to the four Williams as William John's son,William hill,William smith, and William brown.
It was 300 or 400 years before the extra ( 附加的) names gradually developed into last names,or
surnames. They were passed on from generation to generation.By the 1300s,Robert,the son of William
smith, had the name Robert smith, even if he was not a blacksmith like his father. As the last name became widely accepted, the first letter was capitalized,as in Robert Smith.By the 15th century, most people of the upper and middle classes had surnames.
Many surnames were based on father﹣son relations. The"son of"part was added to the father's first
name, like Johnson, meaning John's son.Sometimes it was shortened to just"s",as in Jones or Evans.
Surnames like Hill described the place where a person lived. They are the most common type of surname.A third kind of surname was based on a person's job.Forester was someone who looked after the forest.
In the Middle Ages, occupation names such as Baker,Carpenter, and Miller became common. The fourth kind of surname was nickname(绰号).A man whose surname was Bear might be as fierce as a bear.
Have you ever wondered why some surnames are so common? The most common surname in the
English language is Smith.Being able to make metals(金属)into tools was an important skill in the Middle Ages, and many people were trained as blacksmiths. The most common American surnames are Smith,Johnson,William and Brown.

63.How long did it take for extra names to develop into last names?
64.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?

According to UNESCO,a large number of children in villages in some African countries like Kenya and Tanzania do not go to school. They have to work to make money for their family. And more than half of people in these countries live without electricity.
A company is now working to solve both of these problems. It has created a special solar(太阳的)power station, which is in the shape of a cow, called"Solar Cow".The company encourages parents in those poor villages to send their children to school by setting up Solar Cows at schools.
Just as its name suggests, the Solar Cow can charge batteries(给电池充电)called"Solar Milks".The Solar Milks provide electricity for the families.
The batteries can only be charged using the Solar Cow,so children have to go to school to get the electricity.Everyday, children put their batteries into the bottom of their school's Solar Cow.

Later, the Egyptians used sticks. These sticks measured (测量) time during the day.The sun shone on the tall stick and the stick made a shadow(阴影). As the sun moved across the sky, the position(位置)of the shadow changed. This would let people tell what time it was.
Over time, the Chinese first used sundials instead of shadow sticks. The sundial has a type of shadow stick on it, As the sun shines on it, a shadow appears on the numbers. Each number stands for an hour of the day. But sundials don't work at night or on a cloudy day! There are no shadows unless the sun is out.
Water clocks used water to measure time at night. Water dripped(滴落)slowly from one bowl into another. The level of the water in the bowls showed the time.
People also used sand﹣glasses. You may have seen one. Some games still use sand﹣glasses. The sand falls from the top of the sand﹣glasses to the bottom. It measures short amounts of the time. The more sand falls, the more time has passed. When the sand has finished falling, you have to tum the sand﹣glasses over.

Mobile phones are one of the most useful inventions of the last 50 years, but not everything that is said about them is good. Mobiles are often believed to be the cause of a number of things from poor eyesight and headaches to house fires. There's even one theory that mobile phones should be responsible for the disappearance of bees!
The theory is that the radiation (辐射) given off by mobile phones does great harm to bees, navigation systems (导航系统). Bees have a built﹣in system a bit like GPS and this helps them find their way back to their hives. But recently, thousands of bees have failed to find their way home. It is believed they are dying far from their hives.
The problem was first noticed by beekeepers in America and is a lot more serious than it at first seems. The important thing about bees is that most of the crops in many countries of the world are pollinated by them. Without bees, the crops can't continue to grow. Many beekeepers in Europe have reported losing between 50 and 70 percent of their bees. Jim Piper, a London beekeeper, said to the reporter, "My business is becoming worse. Twenty nine of my forty hives are now empty."
Nobody knows for sure whether the theory is true or not, but it's a fact that bees are disappearing in very large numbers. And we can't manage without them.Einstein said that if all our bees disappeared, man would only live for four more years! If the mobile phone theory is correct, we need to do something about it right now﹣before it's too late.
