My Unexpected Teacher
One cold, rainy evening last October, I was going to interview an old lady in the hospital to gather information for my medical thesis(论文).
The old lady was lying on bed 4B. I sat down on a chair next to her bed, and in a low voice I introduced myself and asked how she was doing. She         _replied that she was getting better. When I told her that I wanted to gather some information from her, she agreed.
After I finished the questionnaire, I prepared to leave so I could get more medical records. Before I could get up, the old lady spoke up in her         _voice, “I haven’t seen you before, Doctor. Are you new?”
“Not really, ma’ma. It’s just that I don’t come here every day,” I replied. She started       _, asking where I was from and why I was working so late in the evening. I was surprised someone in her condition would want to talk.
“Doctor, do you think I can get back to my normal life?” the old lady asked at one point.
I replied that while I didn’t know much about her case, I could tell her what I had learnt about the recovery of the patients of her kind. However, I was unwilling to go into too much detail         _I was only a medical student.
The old lady started talking about herself. She shared her difficulties and sufferings, talked about her husband, who was killed in a car accident, and her struggle to earn money. All I did was to nod my head as a way of showing my sympathy(同情).
_, I discovered that the old lady had been allowed to go out of the hospital as her condition had improved, though she would still need treatment.
The old lady taught me one of the most important         _ a doctor can learn. Sometimes patients do not need expensive treatment. They just need someone with the patience and willingness to lend an ear to them and spend some time to be with them.

I knew we needed to find that shoe, for our mother couldn’t afford new shoes. I had to go back to find it, so I told my sister to wait right   .
A man heard it and stopped me just       I walked off. He asked me, “You are leaving your sister here to find the shoe? What would you do if she is not here when you return?” I didn’t know how to answer that question. He , “It’s OK if you can’t find the shoe, but it is not OK to lose your sister.” Then he sent us to mum’s workplace by taxi.
During my whole life I have depended on the kindness of many strangers, I feel sorry that I can’t find them and say ‘thank you’. I do not even remember what their faces   , but they taught me a lesson --- people are more important than things.

Mr. Garza and his fifth-grade students were exploring the importance of color in nature and in other places. “The color red can give you      ,” Mr. Garza explained. “Blue can be soothing(抚慰的).” He asked the students to     how the grey color of the classroom walls made them feel. They said they always felt that the color was boring and dull.
“Could we paint the classroom a different color?” one of the students asked. The other students nodded eagerly in agreement. Mr. Garza replied that they would have to ask the headmaster for permission. He assigned the students the task of meeting with the headmaster, in order that they could persuade(说服) him to     them to repaint the classroom.
The students were excited when the headmaster agreed. They discussed     colors for the classroom walls and finally decided on a soft yellow. The parents’ club donated the paint, rollers, brushes, and other equipment.

It is well known that everyone has his own dream as well as his own future. But do you know           future really is? I have to say that future is time. That is to say we must save every      now. If we want to have a bright future, we should know      important time is and use it well.
There is an old English saying, “Gain time, gain life.”Then what’s time? Time is        that we can’t see or touch, but we can feel it          by. Time is          with us. When we are at table, time passes; when we play, time passes too. We always say “Time is money”, but time is even       than money, because when money      , we can earn it back. But if time is gone away, it will never return. So, some of us even say time is       .
We should always remember: Future is now. For us students, we should      our best to work hard in order to create a great future of our own. We should make the best       of every hour and be the master of today. We should do everything before us as well as possible. And never       what can be done today till tomorrow.
As we all know, “Time and tide wait for         man.” If you waste today, you will feel      tomorrow. So from now on, work hard. Tomorrow will be better, and your future will be      . Remember :“No pains, no gains.”Today’s hard work is the cause of tomorrow’s harvest.

“There is a big              between growing old and growing up. Anybody can grow old. That doesn’t take any talent or ability,” she added. “But to          , you have to find the chance in change. When one door of happiness closes, another opens. However, we often look at the            door so long that we can’t see the one that has been opened for us. It’s true that we don’t know            we’ve got until we lose it, and it’s also true that we don’t know what we’ve been          until it goes away.
Giving someone all your         doesn’t mean that they’ll love you back. Don’t expect love in return. Just         for it to grow in their hearts.
There are many moments in life when you miss someone so much that you want to bring them into your               and hug them for real! Dream what you want to dream, go where you want to go, and          what you want to be,         you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.
Happiness lies in those who have cried, those who have been hurt, those who have searched, and those who have tried, for only they can understand the         of their lives. The          future will always be based on a forgotten past. You can’t go on well in your life until you let your past failure and heartaches go.

My mother says she probably wouldn’t love butterflies(蝴蝶)today if it weren’t for Mr. Patti.
When my mother Ada was a kid, she loved playing baseball and she wanted to       for the New York Yankees. Then her brother Howie pointed out that there weren’t any women playing major league baseball(棒球联赛). Ada realized he was right. That made her so angry that she started throwing baseballs into the air and hitting them as         as she could.
One day Ada hit a ball through Mr. Patti’s window. She was about to run away when a bright yellow butterfly flew through the hole in the window. A blue butterfly         . Then a lot of colourful butterflies flew out like a rainbow(彩虹). Ada       to open her arms and catch the butterflies.
It was too bad she didn’t       she heard Mr. Patti shouting, “Hey! You there!” Ada almost jumped 12 feet. When she landed, Mr. Patti handed her a net and a box. He pointed to the butterflies. “One hundred butterflies. We need to get them all back. Go!”
Running with the net, Ada began to catch some of the butterflies. By the end of the day, her
was filled with butterflies ― including the bright yellow butterfly. There were still 13 butterflies missing. Mr. Patti showed Ada pictures         had taken of the missing butterflies. The photographs were so beautiful that she could hardly catch her breath.

“I’ll show you,” Mr. Patti replied.
And he did. He taught my mother everything he knew about photographing butterflies. That’s her          now. It is good because there still aren’t any women playing in the major leagues.
“I’ll never forget that day,” my mother says. “Breaking that window changed my         .” Then she goes into her workroom, which is filled with swirling butterflies.
