On April 19th, a pottery (陶器) exhibition was held at Wuhan Optical Experimental Valley School. Many pieces of pottery in different sizes were shown at the school. Some were a bit broken, but all of them were beautiful works of art created by the students.
At the end of last year, the school started a project that called on teachers to collect disused or broken pieces of pottery from the countryside. So far, they have collected about 3,000 pieces.
"Pottery used to play an important role in the daily lives of Chinese people." school head Ma Guoxin told the reporter. "By pottery painting, the students can improve themselves in many ways. They can better understand the history of the pottery, put their creativity into the pottery and show the love for life and beauty. "
Students turned the pottery into different works of art. They were all encouraged to paint pictures on the pottery, even though some students didn't know how to paint. Wang Zixuan, a student from Grade Eight, with little knowledge of painting, painted a beautiful night scenery on a piece of pottery. It was so nice that many students loved it.
Almost every classroom has coloured pieces of pottery. They are either used as flowerpots or pen containers(笔筒). The school has also set up several art corners to show the pottery. For example, the students have put up some pottery on bookcases outside of a lecture hall(报告厅) It has become an enjoyable place for students to rest and read.

It's not a bad thing because it creates high pressure (压力) to help me make great progress in organizing author training.

Emperor penguins are the largest penguins on Earth. Each adult is over a metre tall, and can weigh up to 40 kilograms.
For many months each year, emperors live near the sea in large groups called colonies. However, in May, the weather gets colder and ice covers large areas of ocean. Each colony moves many kilomtres from the water.
Sharing the work
There, each mother penguin lays just one egg. Then all the hungry mothers must walk back to the ocean to find food. The father penguins put their eggs on top of the feet, under a special piece of skin called the brood pouch. For two months, the father penguins keep the eggs safe and warm. Antarctica. Most animals leave for warmer places, but the father penguins stay. In this time, without food, a father penguin can lose almost half of his weight.
New life
Then the babies begin to hatch! The mother penguin returns just in time to see her baby come out of its egg. The chick is then moved to her bored pouch. This can be difficult. If the chick falls, it can freeze quickly, so the penguin parents must be very careful! Once this is done, the father penguin can go back to the ocean to find food.
Growing up
Over the next few months, penguin parents take turns to go to the ocean for food. They each make the trip several times, bringing back food for the chick. The chick grows quickly and is always hungry.
Into the water
By December, winter is ending. The chick is five months old and can live on its own. Soon it enters the water for the first time. It will swim and eat until next April, and then return here. After a few more years, it, too, will start its own family.

Creating a study plan
Studying is important to students. But it is always difficult to find enough time to study every subject you need. So a good plan helps you to make sure of your success in study.
Then, how to make a study plan? Well, you can begin with listing all the subjects you need to study and make sure what you need to do for each subject. Next, you should decide how much time you should spend on different subjects. Now, it is a good idea to study at the same time every day. In this way, you actually have a plan you can remember easily. While arranging ( 安排) time for each subject, you also need to make sure that you still have time for family, friends and rest. This is because you won't be able to succeed in your studies unless you balance your personal life and your study.
Once the plan is made, the next thing you need to do is to follow it. One of the biggest challenges in following your study plan is that you will be tempted ( 诱惑) to avoid it and do something relaxing, or fun instead. Luckily, you can fight this temptation by taking breaks. But be sure not to take extra breaks or too long breaks as it can affect your plan. So at the start of your break, set an alarm clock to remind you when your break is over. Also, you need to use your break
wisely. For example, go for a short walk, eat a small snack, or listen to some music.
To avoid forgetting to follow your plan, try to get into the habit of looking at your calendar every day. Sometimes our plans are herd to follow because some important people in our lives distract ( 使分心) us from our goals. In order to avoid this, tell people in your life about your plan. Put up a copy of your study guide at home so you and your family can see it, and email a copy to your friends so they know when you have spare time.

Do you like reading? Today let me share something about reading in China. The newly national reading report shows that 80 percent of Chinese adults read books, newspapers or magazines in 2018, a year﹣on﹣year increase.
Prevailing(盛行的) digital(数字的) reading
The growth of digital reading has made reading more popular among the Chinese. According to a survey, about 76 percent said they had accessed (访问) content through digital channels. Chen Chengpei, an office worker in Xiamen City loves reading on his mobile phone app in his spare time. He thinks it's so easy to kill the spare minutes.Mobile phone reading has become the main channel for him to get information. He has downloaded seven news apps, through which he reads for one or two hours a day.
Listening to audiobooks has become a new growth point in terms of reading habits. ZhangJin from Beijing likes reading 40 minutes on his mobile while going to work on the bus in the morning, and listening to audiobooks on the way home. According to Ximalaya, 16.9 percent of its total users listen to its audiobooks. To attract more users, the mobile app allows users to vote for the book they hope to listen to most. The audio app tries to meet their needs.

Li Yang, a student in Beijing, used to be worried by piles of books as her house is too small. The problem was solved when she started to sell the used books on an online second﹣hand bookstore Deja Vu."By selling them, most of my books which used to gather dust in the corner can come to life again. "she said.
According to a survey by giant Alibaba in 2018, the market for the second﹣hand book was booming last year as more Chinese tend to trade or exchange their used books online.
The rise of online second﹣hand book platforms and sharing ideas also contributed to the booming book recycling.
Users are able to sell their books by scanning the barcode(扫条形码) of books and then wait for the courier(快递员) to collect them. The collected books will be cleaned, disinfected(消毒)and packed before selling to other readers at a lower price.

Though times have changed, falling asleep in class is still a common occurrence(常事)among teenagers.
Why do students sometimes fall asleep in class? An obvious reason is lack of sleep. However, there are also causes for getting too little sleep.
Homework is a daily occurrence for most students, one that can take three
to four hours per night. A teenager who wants to be able to take part in
any activity besides homework must stay up late to fit everything in. Club
activities, sports, computer﹣game playing, and TV viewing, for example, all contribute to (促成) teens having less time for both homework and sleep.Sometimes teens lack sleep because of after﹣school jobs that are taken on to earn extra money for college, family expenses, or simply for clothes.
Physical problems are another factor that can cause students to fall alseep in class. For example,
insomnia, which may keep a student up at night, causing exhaustion(疲惫不堪)during class hours,
is a serious problem that may require medical attention. Medical evidence also supports the idea that each person has a body clock that helps to decide his or her sleep pattern. Unluckily, these body clocks do not always work according to school timetables.
The effects of falling asleep in class can be quite serious. First of all, sleeping in class is not a good way to endear(使受喜爱) yourself to teachers. In addition, it is highly possible that other students may make jokes about those who sleep in class. However, the most harmful effect of sleeping in class is missing out on important points. In the long run, sleepers may end up failing classes.
Since teens are probably not going to deal with the problem, falling asleep in class will probably remain an all﹣too﹣common occurrence. It will continue until more teens find a way to balance their personal and social lives with school and work, while still finding enough time to sleep.

What would you do if you felt anxious(焦虑的)?Would you feel better if someone else could share his or her experiences with you? In the United States, two teenage girls set up a mental health camp called" Healing(治愈) Hearts" to help people deal with anxiety.
The idea of creating the camp came from Dinah Martinez,17,and her schoolmate Janet Martinez,
18.Both girls suffered from anxiety.
Dinah Martinez always did well in school." But then I just started to collapse(崩溃)," Dinah Martinez said. She stopped talking to her friends, stopped going to school for three weeks and stayed at home.
Janet Martinez was anxious in elementary school.Things got even worse in junior high."It was a lot of pressure(压力)I put on myself.I would wake up in the morning and it was like my heart was racing, she said.
The girls' camp idea got support from Girls Leading Our World( GLow)in the US.The organization awarded them $5,000 to put on the camp for other teenage girls.
The " Healing Hearts" camp was created to "help deal with anxiety, especially with girls in high school because that's when they are the most vulnerable(脆弱的)," Janet Martinez said.
On the first day of the camp,10 girls were there.Experts at the camp talked about anxiety. They
helped girls who were experiencing anxiety. The girls learned how to calm themselves when they are
anxious. They learned about calming methods like deep breathing and guided mediation (调节).
" It's good to know that someone else is going through the same thing as me and we can both help
each other out," Dinah Martinez said.

Nowadays, it never seems we have enough time to realize all of the reading goals (目标) that we set for ourselves. Luckily, we have mobile apps such as Latte Read and Get Abstract to provide abstracts (梗概) of a text. Abstracts are useful tools, especially for students, but like having a friend describe the main content of a story to you, you cannot experience the joy and excitement of reading the original (原来的) text of yourself.
I recently finished reading a thick book of W. Somerset Maugham's collected short stories. It took me around ten years to get through. Thomas Mann's difficult The Magic Mountain took me about six months to read; Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged made me very bored most of the time. Reading a book, whether it is good or bad, is a formative (建设性的) experience. There are plenty of books which I probably shouldn't have taken the time to read. But the challenge of living for a time in the thoughts and experiences of a different history or character makes even the worst book a valuable effort.
Whenever I finish the last line of a book and slowly close it, I like to sit there and think over its lines with a mix of nostalgia (怀旧之情) and pride. I then take the book in hand and find a place for it on my bookshelf. When I step back and look at the books on my shelf, it is as if I am looking at the history of the different lives that I have lived.
Abstracts are useful as a tool to an end, but reading the actual (真正的) book is something much richer. Reading, like anything else in life, is much more about the journey than it ever was the destination (目的地).
(1)What does the writer mainly want to say?
A. Reading abstracts is a best short way to enjoy literature.
B. Reading abstracts cannot bring you the true feeling of actual reading.
C. Reading different kinds of books brings you many advantages.
D. The journey and the destination are equally important in our reading.
(2)What can we know about the writer from the second paragraph?
A. He prefers thick and difficult books to short stories.
B. A good book is better worth reading than a bad one to him.
C. He achieves a lot from reading some challenging books.
D. He is lucky enough never to have read a regrettable book.
(3)In the third paragraph the writer his main point of view (主要观点).
A. explains the meaning of
B. provides further support for
C. makes a conclusion of
D. offers an opposite example for
There is good news for students of vocational (职业的) colleges in China: the government has announced plans to develop modern vocational education. Premier Li Keqiang said the government should speed up the development of modern vocational education to meet the need for skilled workers and technicians (技术人员) in the job market. High school graduates and workers with no special training are encouraged to study in higher vocational colleges. Li said that the number of the new students in higher vocational colleges in China should go up by 1 million this year. This is the first time the central government has a clear plan.
This comes after the news of the large shortfall (不足) in highly skilled technicians, although China has millions of technical workers. China is expected to face a shortfall of 3 million skilled workers who can operate the newest machines by 2020. The shortfall will grow to 4.5 million by 2025. Also, vocational education is unsatisfactory (不令人满意的), although there are many vocational colleges in China. In some vocational colleges, the education methods and courses cannot meet the need of upgrading (升级), manufacturing (制造业). As can be seen from the job market, some companies still can't find highly skilled technicians even with high pay.
To deal with the problem. some vocational colleges have worked with companies to teach students. They have hired skilled technicians from companies as teachers. With the rising of the skilled workers' social position and pay, it is believed the vocational education system in China will start to play a bigger role in the development of China.
(1)What's the main purpose of the development of modern vocational education in China? _
A. To train more highly skilled technicians for the job markets
B. To help vocational college graduates get higher pay from their work.
C. To ask more people to live on themselves with technical skills.
D. To encourage more companies to upgrade manufacturing.
(2)What is one of the problems of Chinese vocational education according to the passage? _
A. Higher vocational college teachers are not well paid and valued..
B. There are only a small number of higher vocational colleges in China.

D. Some of the vocational college teachers are skilled technicians from companies.
(3)The writer believes China's future vocational education is .

Both language and music play a huge role in our culture. Here are some of their similarities.
(1)Both language and music have a writing system.
In English we record language using letters. Similarly, we use notes to record music. Just as you are reading letters and find meaning in them, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music. So just as you read English, you can read music. By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. I can read the ideas or hear the works of someone who lived hundreds of years ago, which is really exciting.
(2)
You can guess where someone is from by listening to the language they use.In the same way, styles of music are different around the world, giving us the chance to understand many different cultures, This also means that there is something for everyone! Even if you don't like British pop music, you may love the energy of Latin American salsa music.
(3)Both share feelings.
How do you know that I am angry? Of course you can see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words, Similarly, music can show you exactly how the composer (作曲者) was or is feeling. When I'm happy, I want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate my happiness; and I listen to slow and quiet music when I'm feeling down. I think we have all used music to express our feelings, often combining (结合)it with language in the form of song lyrics.
(1)Which of the following is the best for the blank?
A. Both are from daily life
B. Both bring us happiness

(2)According to the passage, when the writer feels unhappy, he might listen to .
A. scary movie music
B. exciting rock music
C. loud electronic music
D. sad piano music
(3)The underlined word "it" in the passage refers to " ".
A. music
B. idea
C. feeling
D. culture
(4)Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A. We use notes to write music.
B. We can write music if we speak English.

Sometimes it may seem that what you are learning at school will be of no use in the future. It may seem that you're wasting your life away. But you will be surprised to find how much of what you learnt at school is helpful to you one day. Three people were asked what they found useful at school, and their thoughts are shared below.
When I used to ask my teacher how to spell something, she often said, I don't know. Then she would take out the dictionary and look it up. She was not ashamed to say that she didn't know the answer. I learnt two things. You don't have to know _______; and if you don't know how to spell something, just get the dictionary out. Both are very useful lessons!

In school, you also learn to deal with life in general. Little mistakes can seem to be very serious. Wear the wrong clothes and it seems that everyone is laughing at you. Get too close to a boy too fast and everyone talks about you. You want to go into a hole and die! But the truth is that life goes on. You might feel that what you did "wrong" will never ever be forgotten. However, if you can be brave and keep on, you will find that whatever happened will pass and you will start to enjoy life again.

We had a class called Guidance and in it we learnt about making good decisions in life. I found it pretty boring and didn't pay much attention. One day the teacher made us guess which appliance(家电)
we should buy first once we had our own homes. The answer was a fridge. I learnt that it was true once I had my own place. The first day I bought some chicken meat. By dinner time it smelled and I couldn't
even eat it! My housemate and I started saving to buy a fridge right away.

Complain(抱怨) Politely
Not everything goes the way you want it to. You may go to a restaurant and order a nice meal. But your order is wrong or not cooked properly. You may buy a product that breaks the next day. (1) However, if you speak angrily to people, they will become defensive(自卫的). Then they are less likely to help you. A more effective (有效的) way to get what you want is to stay calm.
Use polite language and a friendly tone of voice. Start with phrases such as, "I'm sorry to bother you, but…"or "Excuse me, but could you…?" For example, "I'm sorry to bother you, but I ordered potato soup, not vegetable." Phrasing your complaint as a question also helps. (2) "Could you help me? I just bought this phone case yesterday, but it's cracked."
(3) There is no faster way to make someone defensive than by blaming them. Use the phrase, "I know this isn't your fault, but…" or "There has been a misunderstanding." (4)_____ Blaming people isn't as important as getting a problem fixed!
There are honest mistakes, but at times someone may try to take advantage of you. In that case, don't say "Hey! You're trying to cheat me!" Instead, use the phrase, "I understood that…" For example, "I understood that the service charge was included in the price." Then give the person a chance to answer.
If you don't get what you want with polite conversation, ask to speak to a manager or supervisor. (5)
A. When trying to correct a problem, don't blame(责备) the person you're talking to.
B. People like to be asked rather than told!
C. But usually, you'll find that polite words and a smile will resolve a situation.
D. These kinds of experiences make you want to complain.
E. These phrases let people know you are only angry at the situation.
If you are given only 1 yuan, could you live in a city for one day? It seems this may be a little difficult. But students from Xi'an did it.
On April 10, more than 60 students from a middle school of Xi'an took part in the One Yuan Metropolis Survival.
