I saved the grain carefully and finally had enough to plant. I built a wall around my garden to keep the wild goats away.

Then when my crop bore its fruit, the birds discovered it. The birds were not afraid of my dog at all. I shot them but as soon as I walked away, they returned. At last, I killed some birds and hung them among the crop, hoping they would serve as the scarecrows, which turned out to be successful. By harvest time, I had nearly two bushels of rice and two and a half bushels of wheat.

With my new grain to store, I found a new problem. The fine grain ran through my baskets. It took me nearly two months to form and dry two ugly pots﹣ one for rice and one for wheat.

Next I formed a clay oven and made some other tools from hard wood and cloth to bake bread. I made and baked bread in my oven. I spent the third year on the island in farming and baking.

Soon after that,I began to think of my days sailing in a tidy boat with Xury. I wished to have a boat and explore the island by sea.

I tried to turn over the ship's boat that I had seen washed up, but failed. I was still determined to have a boat. So I chose a strong tree and spent weeks cutting it down. Then it took me months to turn it from tree to boat.

When it was time to launch, I realized I had made my boat too far from the nearest stream. The boat was far too heavy for me to move. I tried bringing the water to the boat instead of the boat to the water. I soon saw it would take me twenty years of constant labor.

Two little boys

Two little boys had two little toys

Each had a wooden horse.

Joyfully they played each summer's day

Soldiers (士兵) both, of course.

Then Jack broke off his horse's head,

Sad for his toy, then cried with joy

As his young friend Joe said:

When there's room on my horse for two?

When we grow up we'll both be soldiers

And our horses will not be toys

And I wonder if we'll remember

When we were two little boys.

Long years past, war came so

Bravely they marched away.

When there's room on my horse for two?

The Last Leaf is a short story written by US author O. Henry. One of the most famous short story writers in history. His stories are known for their surprising endings, now called "O. Henry endings".

In the story of The Last Leaf, Sue and Joanna are two artists living in New York City. Unfortunately, Joanna is ill and will probably die. In the hospital, something touching and unexpected happens. Let's find out more in the following excerpt(节选).

Sue looked out of the window. All she saw was an old yellow and green ivy(常青藤) plant. The half﹣dead plant had few leaves on it because of the autumn winds.

"There are only five, now," said Joanna.

"Five what, dear? What are you counting?"

"The ivy leaves," replied Joanna. "When the last one goes, I'll die. I've known that for two days. Didn't the doctor tell you about it?"

"Joanna, don't say that. Now, eat some soup and I'll finish my picture."

"I don't want any soup," said Joanna, looking out of the window. "Now there are only four."

"Joanna dear, try to sleep. I must ask Mr. Berman to come up. I want to draw a picture of him as a poor old farmer."

Mr. Berman, who was over 60years old, lived downstairs. He was a painter, too, but he never sold anything, and he drank a lot. Sue told him all about what Joanna was saying.

"She can't really think that this will happen! The poor woman!" he said.

Finally there was only one last leaf on the ivy plant. After a few windy days, the leaf was still there.

"Susie," said Joanna, "I've been a bad girl. That last leaf is telling me that it was very wrong of me to want to die. Bring me some soup, dear."

The next day, the doctor said: "She's out of danger. But poor Mr. Berman downstairs is dying. There's no hope for him, I'm afraid."

That afternoon Sue went into Joanna's bedroom.

"Joanna dear, Mr. Berman died today. And do you know why? One terrible, cold wet night he took a ladder and some green and yellow paint and he climbed up, and ﹣ oh, look at the last ivy leaf on the wall! Why didn't it ever move in the wind? Can't you see? 50. Why did Mr. Berman paint an ivy leaf on that wall on a terrible, cold wet night? __

A: Because Susie asked him to do so.

B: Because he drank a lot and nobody could stop him.

C: Because he liked the ivy plant and wanted to paint it before he died.

A: Joanna was a bad girl without hope in her life

On June 9th,1870, Charles Dickens died at the age of 58. The next day, a headline in The New York Times read: "Death of the Great Novelist …Will Be Remembered by the People …"

The headline was not overstating (夸大) the popularity of Dickens.Even today, the British novelist is loved by readers all over the world.Dickens created some unforgettable characters. You must have heard of or even read some of his novels: Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol and A Tale of Two Cities. A Tale of Two Cities has sold more than 200 million copies. Since 1897, there have been more than 300 film and TV adaptations (改编版本)of Dickens' works.A Christmas Carol alone has had nearly 50.

Natalie Mcknight is a literature professor (文学教授) who studies Dickens and his works. She explains why the novelist has remained so popular. One important reason, she says,is that Dickens wrote from his heart. He tried hard to produce emotional effects (情感效果) among his readers. In his works,he paid special attention to the "little man" at the bottom of society in the UK, which deeply mirrored the social reality at that time. A Christmas Carol, for example, was written to make every reader think about how they could make a difference to their society. People always enjoy works that make them laugh, cry and think. Many other 9th﹣century novelists wrote entertaining (娱乐的) works. However, few of them worked as hard as Dickens to touch the readers deeply.

Dickens wrote about situations and emotions that still interest people today. He used his pen to fight social inequality and gave voice to the poor. His works led to many important social changes. Readers always enjoy seeing poor people rise and succeed.

This year marks the 150th year of Dickens' death. It's another chance to remember this great writer. Will you read or re﹣read some of his famous works?
