The Last Leaf is a short story written by US author O. Henry. One of the most famous short story writers in history. His stories are known for their surprising endings, now called "O. Henry endings".

In the story of The Last Leaf, Sue and Joanna are two artists living in New York City. Unfortunately, Joanna is ill and will probably die. In the hospital, something touching and unexpected happens. Let's find out more in the following excerpt(节选).

Sue looked out of the window. All she saw was an old yellow and green ivy(常青藤) plant. The half﹣dead plant had few leaves on it because of the autumn winds.

"There are only five, now," said Joanna.

"Five what, dear? What are you counting?"

"The ivy leaves," replied Joanna. "When the last one goes, I'll die. I've known that for two days. Didn't the doctor tell you about it?"

"Joanna, don't say that. Now, eat some soup and I'll finish my picture."

"I don't want any soup," said Joanna, looking out of the window. "Now there are only four."

"Joanna dear, try to sleep. I must ask Mr. Berman to come up. I want to draw a picture of him as a poor old farmer."

Mr. Berman, who was over 60years old, lived downstairs. He was a painter, too, but he never sold anything, and he drank a lot. Sue told him all about what Joanna was saying.

"She can't really think that this will happen! The poor woman!" he said.

Finally there was only one last leaf on the ivy plant. After a few windy days, the leaf was still there.

"Susie," said Joanna, "I've been a bad girl. That last leaf is telling me that it was very wrong of me to want to die. Bring me some soup, dear."

The next day, the doctor said: "She's out of danger. But poor Mr. Berman downstairs is dying. There's no hope for him, I'm afraid."

That afternoon Sue went into Joanna's bedroom.

"Joanna dear, Mr. Berman died today. And do you know why? One terrible, cold wet night he took a ladder and some green and yellow paint and he climbed up, and ﹣ oh, look at the last ivy leaf on the wall! Why didn't it ever move in the wind? Can't you see? It was Mr. Berman's last great picture. He painted it there the night that the last leaf fell."

48. In this sentence "She can't really think that this will happen!", "this" refers to

A: Joanna didn't eat any soup

B: The doctor said she would die

C: Joanna counted the leaves of the ivy plant

D: Joanna thought when the last ivy leaf went, she would die

49. Why didn't the last ivy leaf fall after a few windy days?

A: Because it was painted on the wall.

B: Because the leaf was green.

C: Because the wind wasn't strong.

D: Because it was tied to the tree.

50. Why did Mr. Berman paint an ivy leaf on that wall on a terrible, cold wet night? __

A: Because Susie asked him to do so.

B: Because he drank a lot and nobody could stop him.

C: Because he liked the ivy plant and wanted to paint it before he died.

D: Because that night the last ivy leaf fell, he didn't want Joanna to lose hope.

51. From the passage we know that

A: Joanna was a bad girl without hope in her life

B: Mr. Berman was a very kind, great artist

C: Susie never let Mr. Berman know what Joanna said.

D: Mr. Berman's pictures were so terrible that he couldn't sell them out.

It's hard to believe that I wrote Number the Stars more than twenty years ago.It seems like yesterday that I answered the phone on a snowy January morning and received the news that it had won the 1990 Newbery Medal(美国纽伯瑞儿童文学奖).

I think readers of every age may match themselves with the important persons in the books they love and ask themselves:Would I have done that? What choice would I have made?

And ten﹣the age of Annemarie in Number the Stars﹣is an age when young people are beginning to develop a strong set of personal ethics(道德观;价值观).They are beginning to realize that the world they live in is not always good and safe.

So they follow a story about a ten﹣year﹣old girl who is caught in a dangerous situation, and she must make decisions.Young readers become cheerful when Annemarie takes a deep breath, enters the woods, faces the danger, stands up to the enemy and wins her victory.

Today, the book has been published in many countries and translated into many languages. It found its way into the hands and hearts of children who had read about but never experienced war. . . .Books do change lives,I know;and many readers have told me that Number the Stars changed theirs when they were young, that it made them think about both.cruelty(残酷;残忍) and courage. "It was something that shaped my idea of how people should be treated, "wrote a young woman recently, telling me.about her own fourth﹣grade experience with the book.

The Danish friend who first told me the story of her childhood, and who became the Annemarie in my book,is an old woman now.So am I.We both love thinking of the children reading the story today, coming to it for the first time and realizing that once, for a short time and in a small place,a group of prejudice﹣free(不存偏见的)people created a touching story of love.and kindness towards others.

On June 9th,1870, Charles Dickens died at the age of 58. The next day, a headline in The New York Times read: "Death of the Great Novelist …Will Be Remembered by the People …"

The headline was not overstating (夸大) the popularity of Dickens.Even today, the British novelist is loved by readers all over the world.Dickens created some unforgettable characters. You must have heard of or even read some of his novels: Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol and A Tale of Two Cities. A Tale of Two Cities has sold more than 200 million copies. Since 1897, there have been more than 300 film and TV adaptations (改编版本)of Dickens' works.A Christmas Carol alone has had nearly 50.

Natalie Mcknight is a literature professor (文学教授) who studies Dickens and his works. She explains why the novelist has remained so popular. A Christmas Carol, for example, was written to make every reader think about how they could make a difference to their society. People always enjoy works that make them laugh, cry and think. Many other 9th﹣century novelists wrote entertaining (娱乐的) works. However, few of them worked as hard as Dickens to touch the readers deeply.

Dickens wrote about situations and emotions that still interest people today. He used his pen to fight social inequality and gave voice to the poor. His works led to many important social changes. Readers always enjoy seeing poor people rise and succeed.

Last month, the artist Christo opened his new art sculpture. It is made up of 7,506 colorful barrels (桶) floating on a lake in Hyde Park in London. Christo calls it The London Mastaba. It is his first major outdoor art sculpture in Great Britain. The artwork is in the shape of a mastaba. It looks somewhat like a pyramid with a fat top. The London Mastaba is about 65 feet high, 98 feet wide and 130 feet long, and it weighs about 1.3 million pounds. The metal barrels can be seen from hundreds of feet away.

    (2)

Everyone who looks at it will see something different. Many will think the barrels are barrels of oil in the heart of one of London's oldest parks. They might wonder if Christo was making an announcement against pollution. Others will see a prism or giant pixels or simply a shape. However, everyone must decide for themselves, the 83﹣year﹣old artist said. Christo said he had nothing special in mind when he created The London Mastaba. "There are no messages," Christo said. "There is something in it to discover yourself. I cannot direct you."

    "A Stairway To The Sky"

"It's created a giant invitation, like a stairway to the sky," Christo said. The artist was standing on the banks of the Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park where his artwork floats. Swans are swimming nearby. Some barrels are red with a white candy stripe on the sides. Others are colored blue, purple and red. Their colors will look different as the light changes, Christo said. Their reflection (倒影) in the lake will be like an abstract painting. Abstraction is an artistic style that does not always show something recognizable or realistic.

"Not Really Sure How I Feel About It"

Many people walking in the park were surprised to see the artwork. "It's very modern, but this place is nature and historical. I don't like it here," said Yasmin KocOzcengel, who is a tourist from Turkey. Another person who took a look at the artwork was Anna Andronova. She called The London Mastaba very brave. If it weren't as brave, it wouldn't be as amazing, she said. Sheila Seffenson is an American living in London. "I'm just not really sure how I feel about it," Steffenson said. "Maybe it's a message about pollution. Who knows?"

(1)What can we learn about the artwork?

A. It is a floating pyramid.

B. It is made up of empty oil barrels.

C. It is an abstract painting.

D. It is considered as different things.

(2)Which of the following would be most suitable for ____?

A. An Announcement Against Pollution.

B. An Announcement Against Pollution?

Natural scenes often become the themes of poetry. Poets watch nature closely and present(呈现) its beauty in their poems. For example, poets may describe natural scenes such as a spring day or a snowy day. Besides, poets often express their feelings about nature by creating lively images(形象) in poems.

With images, poets can describe the details (细节) of something colorfully and clearly. Readers, on the other hand, can connect their own experiences with the images in the poems so that they can share the poets' ideas. Now let's read the poem "Who Has Seen the Wind?"

When we read the lines "When the leaves hang trembling" and "When the trees bow down their heads," they remind us of a windy day. The poet successfully creates an image of the wind by describing details of the scene. These help readers think of the moment when the wind passes by. We might even bow our own heads, imagining that we are the trees.

In the poem "Night," Blake describes many details of a night scene. People know very well what they can see at night, like stars or the moon. However, Blake sees more than just the moon itself; he sees the moon as a flower, smiling at us from up in the sky. So the moon is really compared to a flower and personified(拟人化) as a smiling person.

Then Alice saw a small glass table. There was a little golden key on it.She picked it up and put it all the locks on the doors but it didn't open any of them. She moved a curtain on one of the walls and discovered another door,a very small one.She put the key in the lock.It was exactly the right size! She opened the door and looked through it.At the end of a low passage she saw a beautiful garden. It was full of brightly coloured flowers and fountains.

"What a curious feeling,"she said."I'm getting smaller and smaller."It was true! She was now as small as her cat Dinah.

"Good! I can go through the door into the garden,"she said. But,poor Alice! When she got to the door, she didn't have the key! It was on the table. She couldn' t reach it because she was too small now. She sat down and cried.

After a while she said, "Alice!Stop crying. Crying doesn't help. Dry your tears immediately! "

When she looked at the table again, she saw a small glass box under it.She picked it up and opened it.There was a small cake inside. It had the words"EAT ME"on it.She put a small piece of it in her mouth.

"If I grow bigger I can reach the key,"she thought. "And if I grow smaller I can go under the door."
