After a while attention to Tom ended, and the usual school murmur(嗡嗡读书声)rose upon the boring air once more. Now the boy began to steal secret glances(偷看) at the girl. She noticed it, made a face at him and gave him the back of her head for the space of a minute. When she slowly faced around again, an apple lay before her. She pushed it away. Tom gently put it back. She pushed it away again, but with less animosity(敌意). Tom patiently returned it to its place. Then she let it remain. Tom wrote on his paper, "Please take it﹣I got more." The girl glanced at the words, but made no sign.
Now the boy began to draw something on the paper, hiding his work with his left hand. For a time the girl refused to notice; but her human curiosity(好奇心) soon began to show itself by hardly noticeable(明显的) signs. The boy worked on, seemingly not aware. The girl made some non﹣committal(含糊的) efforts to see, but the boy did not display that he was aware of it. At last she couldn't bear it and whispered:
"Let me see it."
Tom partly uncovered the picture of a house with some smoke rising from the chimney(烟囱). Then the girl's interest began to fasten itself upon the work and she forgot everything else. When it was finished, she gazed a moment, then whispered:
"It's nice﹣draw a man."
The artist created a man in the front yard; she was satisfied, and whispered:
"It's a beautiful man﹣﹣now draw me in it."
Tom drew an hour﹣glass(沙漏) as the body, a full moon as her head and some arms added to it. The girl said:
"It's ever so nice﹣I wish I could draw. No one has ever taught me that."
"It's easy," whispered Tom, "I'll learn you."
"Oh, will you? When?"
"At noon. Do you go home to dinner?"
"I'll stay if you will."
"Good﹣that's a deal. What's your name?"

Animals are our friends. Sometimes they make trouble, but sometimes they can help us.And they hope to live a happy life, too. Here are two real stories from our readers.
The first story is from Ray."My cat, Tiger, hates it when I use my iPad because it takes my attention away from him. One year, I had a fall at home and was on the floor for 16 hours, During this time, I was unable to move and couldn't get to the phone to call for help. Tiger stayed by my side until he disappeared under my bed. 'What's he up to?' I wondered. To my surprise, he started to push something towards me. It was my iPad,which I didn't realize had fallen off the bed and onto the floor. He probably didn't know what it was, but he knew that it made me happy. Thanks to Tiger, I was able to communicate with my friend, Becky, who then told my doctor."
The second story is from Colin. "Years ago, my friend Julius saved a bird﹣a wild 'Mom' cockatoo(鹦鹉) from the side of the road and kept it as a pet in a big cage(笼子).It lost one of her wings, so she was unable to return to the wild. Soon, two wild cockatoos came visiting and one 'Dad' bird wanted to find his way into the cage. The 'Mom' cockatoo in the cage was soon expecting. But as she couldn't fly,'Dad' cockatoo built a home in the tree, keeping off everyone who got close to 'Mom' cockatoo. 'Baby' cockatoo would spend his days flying off with his dad, leaving his mom behind. She would sit and wait until they returned home each afternoon. The family stayed together happily."

Summer is finally here for most of us. Sadly, summer is not so pleasant to people in a bit less lucky places, where air conditioning(空调) is not easy to get for most of them.
But as a saying goes, where there is a will, there is a way, especially for those who like doing it
yourself(DIY). A young man from Bangladesh(孟加拉国) designed an air conditioning system called the Eco Cooler, one that does not require power, and is made of the world's most common waste﹣plastic bottles.
The Eco Cooler is super simple to build﹣no special engineering skills are required. First, to fix it,
a window should be taken away and replaced(替代) by it. Second, a board should be cut into the size of a window. Some bottle﹣neck sized holes should then be cut onto the board. Then, the funnel﹣shaped(漏斗状) bottlenecks, cut from the plastic bottles, should be put into the holes. The next step is to fix the design onto the window frame(框) with the wider side facing outwards. And this is it.
The Eco Cooler then works by catching the winds and sending them inside the building. It can reduce the temperature of a room by as much as 5°C﹣a big difference when looking at comfortable 25°C compared to uncomfortable 30°C.
The idea of the inventor, Ashis Paul, was to show his great product to as many People as possible. For this purpose, he received help from some groups of volunteers. Together, they offered to help local people build and fix the units,as well as teach them how to make them themselves.
Yes, the Eco Cooler is not a super high﹣tech air conditioning system, but it is one that can make a

In a few hours Sam would be flying to Germany. We looked at each other but no sound broke the silence of my beach﹣side house.
Such a moment was not the first time for me.On Sam's first day of kindergarten (幼儿园),I felt his stress when holding his hand.He looked at me﹣as he did now. But I said nothing till the school bus came.About ten years later,I drove him to the college. He was sick but I didn't know then. I thought he was just too tired. I tried to think of something to say as he would start a new period of life. Again,___________.
Now, as I stood before him, I thought of those opportunities we parents all let pass. A boy graduates from school,a daughter gets married. We seldom find a quiet moment to tell them what they have meant to us. Or what they might face in the future.
Sam was weak when he was born but grew into a strong boy. Then he became the best baseball player in high school. His finest moment came when he got the first prize at a science fair.I was sorry he gave up his athletic talent, but proud that later he chose English literature. One day,I told Sam I regretted never traveling abroad to know better about the world before working.Sam decided to learn German in Berlin, even though his friends thought it meaningless.
The night before he was to leave, I failed to say any words again. Maybe, I thought, it wasn't necessary to say anything.
What does it matter if a father never tells a son what he really thinks of him? But as I stood before Sam,I knew it does matter. My father and I loved each other. However,I always regretted never hearing him put his feelings into words.
"Sam,"I said,"if I could have picked,I would have picked you."I wasn't sure he understood what I meant. Sam came towards me and threw his arms around me,saying"thank you".My eyes misted over (模糊). Then, the moment ended, and Sam left home.
That was seven weeks ago, and now I think about him when I walk along the beach near my home on weekends. Thousands of miles away, Sam might be busy walking in the street of Berlin.
What I had said to Sam was not new. It was nothing. But,it was everything.

Many years ago,a French naturalist,Comte de Buffon, wrote some books about natural history. The books were a great success even though some critics(批评家)did not like them.
Thomas Jefferson did not like what Comte de Buffon had said about the natural wonders(奇观)of the New World. It seemed to Jefferson that Comte de Buffon had spoken of natural wonders in America as if(好像)they were unimportant.
This troubled Thomas Jefferson. He was also a naturalist,as well as a farmer,an inventor,a historian,a writer and a politician(政治家).He had seen the natural wonders of Europe. To him, they were no more important than those of the New World.
In 1788,Thomas Jefferson wrote about his home state,Virginia. While writing,he thought of its natural beauty and then of the words of Comte de Buffon. At that moment,Jefferson created a new word﹣belittle. He said,"Comte de Buffon believes that nature belittles her productions on this side of the Atlantic(大西洋)."
Noah Webster, the American word expert, liked this word.He put it in the English language dictionary in 1806,"Belittle﹣to make small, unimportant."
Americans had already accepted Jefferson's word and started to use it.In 1797,the Independent Chronicle(独立纪事报)used the word to describe a politician the paper supported."It is an honorable man,"the paper wrote,"so let the opposition try to belittle him as much as they please."
In 1872,a famous American word expert decided that the time had come to kill this word.He said,"Belittle shouldn't become English. And more critical writers of America, like those of Britain, feel no need of it."

Historically, most cars have run on gasoline(汽油),but that may change in the future:cars can also run on other liquid fuels(液体燃料)and electricity.
Gasoline is from oil.The energy in gasoline comes from hydrocarbons(碳氢化合物).Gasoline provides great power for cars. However,it causes environmental problems, like air pollution and temperature rise.So gasoline can't be the best fuel.
Another choice is electricity.Electricity cars can be as efficient(效能好的)as cars using gasoline,And they produce less pollution. But electric cars themselves are more expensive.Good news is that the cost has been lower and there are more and more places for the cars to get electricity ever since 2010.
The other choices are other liquid fuels. Many of these can be stored in the same places as gasoline, and used in the same cars. They can also be friendly to the environment.
One way to make such fuels is to get CO 2from the air and put it in water.Through chemical reaction, hydrocarbons can be created. However, these fuels take up more space.
Another way is to make such fuels from plants which take in carbon from the air. These fuels are greener in use.But not all of them can be as efficient as gasoline.
For a fuel to be the best, people have to be able to afford it.Unluckily, almost every green technology is more expensive than that of using gasoline.Governments and car producers are doing everything they car to cut down the costs. In the end,the best fuel will be both affordable for car users and green for our planet.

The Youth Climate Summit(气候峰会) a week﹣long festival of climate action for primary and middle schools in the UK,starts on 9 November. It aims to create a fairer, more environmental world and make promises that will help the planet.Climate change is the long﹣term changes in the world's weather patterns that are mostly caused by human activity. "Unlike world leaders, "say the summit's organizers. "young people are refusing to let it drop off the plan. "
Each day has a topic, which includes food and fashion, looking at how humans harm the environment and how to save the planet.Organizations are leading some on line activities. For example, the Marine Conservation Society is hosting meetings on protecting sea fish.Separately, the environmental organization Greenpeace is running a workshop on how to turn worn﹣out clothing into something new and wearable.
The summit will finish on 13 November, when youth ambassadors(大使)wants schools to stop paper waste.Max,another 16﹣year﹣old ambassador wants schools to organize more trips and activities that get students outside to experience the beauty of nature. As part of the summit, hundreds of schools across the country are signing up to the Let's Go Zero activity, aiming to become carbon﹣zero(零碳的)by 2030.
Carbon﹣zero schools are ones that promise to stop emitting carbon in seven areas, including where they get their food and how they use water and recycle their waste. The activity is run by Ashden,a charity working towards climate solutions.Ashden hopes that schools will be able to help each other by sharing ideas and methods. It is also calling on the Government to back the promise.Head over to transform﹣our﹣world.org where you can find out more.

The first emperor of China,Qin Shihuang, completed a huge number of projects during his rule.Between 221 and 210 B.C.,he started the building of the Great Wall. The emperor also ordered the building of a huge army of life﹣sized terracotta soldiers(士兵).These,he hoped, would protect his tomb after his death.
Lost in Time
The soldiers in Xi'an's terracotta museum are today light brown, but they weren't always. They began as an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple.Sadly, most of the colors did not last to the present day. After being exposed(暴露)to air during digging, the coating under the paint began to fall off.The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking away with it important pieces of history.
New Technology
Now new technology is starting to show the army's true colors.Archeologists(考古学家)have recently discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted features, including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes.Chinese and German researchers have developed a chemical liquid(液体)to help save the soldiers' colors. After finding a soldier or another art piece, archeologists put the liquid on it. They then cover it in plastic.
Back to Life
Archeologists are also finding colors in the dirt around the soldiers. It's important not to do anything with the dirt,so the colors won't be lost. "We are treating the dirt as an art piece, "says Rong Bo,the museum's leading archeologist. The next challenge, says Rong Bo,is to find a way to use the colors onto the army﹣again.Once that happens, artists can bring Emperor Qin's army back to its full, bright colors.
