Critical thinking(批判性思维) is trying to improve the way you think. People use critical thinking in every area of life to solve problems and evaluate claims(评估主张).

Like every other skill, critical thinking takes practice. When a problem comes our way, we need to think critically to decide how to solve it. When we see an advertisement, for example, we should stop and think. Advertisements are made to make people feel certain that they are true, and then people can buy the products. But is what the advertisement says true? Is it making a claim? Or does it only interest us? Critical thinking is important and stops us from making poor choices. In fact, we are using it if we ask questions naturally about what we see.

Practice makes perfect. While you are growing in critical thinking, you'll become a wiser and more thoughtful person. There are many ways of doing practice. Here are a few.

★ Read about a topic people disagree on. Look at articles or books on all sides of the subject. For each side of the subject, think carefully and evaluate it.

★ When you see or hear a claim, ask questions about it. Who is making the claim and why?

★Evaluate your own thinking. Where and why do you think uncritically? How can you improve?

Critical thinking should be part of everything we do. It may help you to succeed at work or school Make yourself into a habit of critical thinking. Change your thoughts and change your world.

Have you ever wondered how we know the things that we know? How do we know, for example, that the stars are really huge balls of fire like the Sun and very far away? And how do we know that the Earth is a smaller ball turning round one of those stars, the Sun?

The key to these questions is "evidence", which means the facts, signs or objects that make you believe something is true.

Sometimes evidence means actually(实际地) seeing(or hearing, feelings, smelling …) that something is true. Astronauts have travelled far enough from the Earth to see with their own eyes that it is round. Sometimes our eyes need help. The "evening star" looks like a bright twinkle in the sky, but with a telescope(望远镜) you can see that it is a beautiful ball. Something that you learn by direct seeing(or hearing or feeling …) is called an observation.

Often evidence isn't just observation on its own, but observation always hides at the back of it. If there's been a murder, often nobody(except the murderer and the dead person!) actually observed it. But detectives can gather together lots of other observations which may all point towards the suspect. If a person's fingerprints match those found on a knife, this is evidence that he touched it. It doesn't prove that he did the murder, but it can help when it's joined up with lots of other evidence.

Prediction(预测) helps to look for evidence. Scientists make a guess about what might be true. For example, if the world is really round, we can predict that any of us, going on and on in the same direction, should eventually find ourselves back where we started.

People sometimes say that you must believe in feelings deep inside, but not all the inside feelings are real evidence.

What can we do about all this? When somebody tells you something that sounds possible, think to yourself: "Is there any evidence for that?" And, next time somebody tells you that something is true, why not say to them: "What kind of evidence is there for that?" Remember, always think carefully before you believe a word.

32. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A: What you see directly is real evidence.

B: Prediction helps to prove something if it is true.

C: People should always believe their inside feelings.

D: Astronauts find the Earth is round with a telescope.

33. Why does the writer use the example of a detective in Paragraph 4?

A: To explain what prediction is.

B: To tell what observation is called.

C: To introduce how detectives work.

D: To prove evidence is not just observation.

34. The underlined word "eventually" in Paragraph 5means

A: finally

B: probably

C: completely

D: luckily

35. What's the best title of the passage?

A: Evidence speaks

B: Scientists make predictions

C: Inside feelings help get ideas

D: Observation offers the facts

Last month, the artist Christo opened his new art sculpture. It is made up of 7,506 colorful barrels (桶) floating on a lake in Hyde Park in London. Christo calls it The London Mastaba. It is his first major outdoor art sculpture in Great Britain. The artwork is in the shape of a mastaba. It looks somewhat like a pyramid with a fat top. The London Mastaba is about 65 feet high, 98 feet wide and 130 feet long, and it weighs about 1.3 million pounds. The metal barrels can be seen from hundreds of feet away.

    (2)

Everyone who looks at it will see something different. Many will think the barrels are barrels of oil in the heart of one of London's oldest parks. They might wonder if Christo was making an announcement against pollution. Others will see a prism or giant pixels or simply a shape. However, everyone must decide for themselves, the 83﹣year﹣old artist said. Christo said he had nothing special in mind when he created The London Mastaba. "There are no messages," Christo said. "There is something in it to discover yourself. I cannot direct you."

    "A Stairway To The Sky"

"It's created a giant invitation, like a stairway to the sky," Christo said. The artist was standing on the banks of the Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park where his artwork floats. Swans are swimming nearby. Some barrels are red with a white candy stripe on the sides. Others are colored blue, purple and red. Their colors will look different as the light changes, Christo said. Their reflection (倒影) in the lake will be like an abstract painting. Abstraction is an artistic style that does not always show something recognizable or realistic.

"Not Really Sure How I Feel About It"

Many people walking in the park were surprised to see the artwork. "It's very modern, but this place is nature and historical. I don't like it here," said Yasmin KocOzcengel, who is a tourist from Turkey. Another person who took a look at the artwork was Anna Andronova. She called The London Mastaba very brave. If it weren't as brave, it wouldn't be as amazing, she said. Sheila Seffenson is an American living in London. "I'm just not really sure how I feel about it," Steffenson said. "Maybe it's a message about pollution. Who knows?"

(1)What can we learn about the artwork?

A. It is a floating pyramid.

B. It is made up of empty oil barrels.

C. It is an abstract painting.

D. It is considered as different things.

(2)Which of the following would be most suitable for ____?

A. An Announcement Against Pollution.

B. An Announcement Against Pollution?

A. Romantic.

B. Magical.

A. To add some more colours to the old park.

B. To bring his art career to a new height.

Historically, most cars have run on gasoline(汽油),but that may change in the future:cars can also run on other liquid fuels(液体燃料)and electricity.

Gasoline is from oil.The energy in gasoline comes from hydrocarbons(碳氢化合物).Gasoline provides great power for cars. However,it causes environmental problems, like air pollution and temperature rise.So gasoline can't be the best fuel.

Another choice is electricity.Electricity cars can be as efficient(效能好的)as cars using gasoline,And they produce less pollution. But electric cars themselves are more expensive.Good news is that the cost has been lower and there are more and more places for the cars to get electricity ever since 2010.

The other choices are other liquid fuels. Many of these can be stored in the same places as gasoline, and used in the same cars. They can also be friendly to the environment.

One way to make such fuels is to get CO 2from the air and put it in water.Through chemical reaction, hydrocarbons can be created. However, these fuels take up more space.

Another way is to make such fuels from plants which take in carbon from the air. These fuels are greener in use.But not all of them can be as efficient as gasoline.

For a fuel to be the best, people have to be able to afford it.Unluckily, almost every green technology is more expensive than that of using gasoline.Governments and car producers are doing everything they car to cut down the costs. In the end,the best fuel will be both affordable for car users and green for our planet.

The first emperor of China,Qin Shihuang, completed a huge number of projects during his rule.Between 221 and 210 B.C.,he started the building of the Great Wall. The emperor also ordered the building of a huge army of life﹣sized terracotta soldiers(士兵).These,he hoped, would protect his tomb after his death.

    Lost in Time

The soldiers in Xi'an's terracotta museum are today light brown, but they weren't always. They began as an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple.Sadly, most of the colors did not last to the present day. After being exposed(暴露)to air during digging, the coating under the paint began to fall off.The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking away with it important pieces of history.

    New Technology

Now new technology is starting to show the army's true colors.Archeologists(考古学家)have recently discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted features, including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes.Chinese and German researchers have developed a chemical liquid(液体)to help save the soldiers' colors. After finding a soldier or another art piece, archeologists put the liquid on it. They then cover it in plastic.

    Back to Life

Archeologists are also finding colors in the dirt around the soldiers. It's important not to do anything with the dirt,so the colors won't be lost. "We are treating the dirt as an art piece, "says Rong Bo,the museum's leading archeologist. The next challenge, says Rong Bo,is to find a way to use the colors onto the army﹣again.Once that happens, artists can bring Emperor Qin's army back to its full, bright colors.
