Here is a 2-way student exchange. Fred, 19 , spent last year in Germany with George’s family. In turn, George’s son Mike spent a year in Fred’s home in America.
Fred knew little German when he arrived. But after 2 months of studying, the language became easy for him. School was very different from what he had looked forward to and it was much harder. Students stood up politely when the teacher came into the room. They took 14 subjects while American students usually took 6 in the US.
Family life, too, was different. The father’s word was the law(法律) . All the children had to do their activities with their family. Fred also missed having a car. In Germany, you should walk to go out to have a good time.
At the same time, in America, Mike was forming his own ideas. He says,’ American schools are too easy for our level but I have to say that I like it a lot in Germany , we do nothing except study. Here we take part in many other activities.

Street Markets Around the World
There are many ways of shopping. You can shop by telephone, by post or through your home computer, but for many people, the most exciting way to shop is also the most traditional—at a street market. You can find markets anywhere in the world. Here are four of them:
There are many “floating markets” in Asia; perhaps the most unusual is Thailand(泰国), at a place called Damned Saduak. It’s open from six in the morning to the noon every day. People sell fresh fruit from their boats.
Many Belgians(比利时人) say that the Grand Place is the most beautiful square in the world. It’s the home of a colourful flower market. It’s open every day except Monday. On Monday, instead of flowers, there’s a wonderful bird market.
One of the world’s famous markets is in Mexico City(墨西哥城)—the Sonora Market. You can buy toys, birds, herbs and medicine. There’re all kinds of things. It’s open every day from early in the morning till late at night.
In England, every weekend, thousands of young people from all over London travel to the Camden Market—it’s the place to go for street fashion, CDs and tapes. Many people also go there for fun.

Mrs. Smith: In English, yellow sometimes means afraid. Blue means sad. A person with a green thumb grows plants well. And a white lie is not a bad one.
Mary: Would you give me an example for a white lie?
Mrs. Smith: Certainly. Now I give you some cakes. In fact you don’t like them, but you won’t say so. Instead you say, “No, I’m not hungry.” That is a white lie.

Your schooldays should be some of the best and happiest days of your life. You shouldn’t waste this wonderful opportunity to learn. Here is our advice for you to have a happy school-life.
Don’t say things are difficult or boring. Be interested in school-life and your school subjects. Join lots of activities. Be quick to put your hand up. Go round the school with a big smile.
School is not a holiday camp. If you are not working, you are not learning, and you are wasting your time at school. Teachers cannot make everything enjoyable.
If you don’t eat a good breakfast, you will be thinking about food in class. If you go to bed late and do not have enough sleep, you will be sleepy in class. Play some sports to keep your body strong.
Do not say you will do things tomorrow. If you get behind the class, it is very difficult to get back in front. You cannot finish a race if you rest all the time.
Everyone fails some tests, loses some matches and has bad days. Friends are not always perfect, and they sometimes say and do unpleasant things. Don’t let small problems seem very big and important.

Can plants eat people? Probably not, but there are many plants that eat meat. Some of them are big, and they can eat small animals. One famous meat-eating plant is the Venus flytrap.
The Venus flytrap is a very strange plant. It grows in dry parts of the United States. Its leaves are like the pages of a book. (A) They can open and close very quickly. Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If an insect touches one of the hairs, the leaf closes quickly. The insect cannot get out. In about half an hour, the leaf presses(挤压) the insect until it is dead. Then, the plant covers the insect with a special liquid (液体). Slowly, the plant eats the insect.
(B) Plants are living things that have leaves and roots and grow in earth. Most of them get energy from the sun, the air, and the ground. In some places, the ground is very poor. It doesn’t have all the important things that plants need, especially nitrogen (氮). Animal meat has a lot of nitrogen, so some plants eat meat to get what they need. Let’s hope that some of the bigger plants don’t get the same idea!
Can plants get energy from the air?
Why is Venus flytrap a famous piant?
In some places, why do some plants get energy from animal meat?
写出(A)处划线单词they所指代的名词。
将(B)处划线句子改为两个简单句。

Idioms are phrases and sentences that do not mean exactly what they say. Even if you know the meaning of each word you see or hear, you may not understand the idiom because you don’t understand the culture behind it.
For example, if an American boy asks his mother what’s for dinner tomorrow, she may say “I’ll play it by ear”, that means she doesn’t have plans for dinner and she will decide later. "Play by ear" used to mean playing music using the sheet music, but now people often use it when they’re not talking about music.
There’re many idioms in English. If you learn to use them, your English will be more vivid and colorful. English idioms are more common in spoken English. They can be difficult to remember sometimes. Next time when you hear somebody saying to you, "Give me a hand", you don’t necessarily stretch out your hand to him/her, but you do need to be helpful. And when the situation is out of hand, you usually can do very little to manage all that. What about a green hand? It’s not about the color of your hand! You’re a green hand when you are very new at your work and don’t have much experience. If you and your partner always work together hand in glove, you two definitely work together very well.
Can you guess the meanings of some common English idioms to do with parts of your body?
What is an idiom ?
What does “ Can you give me a hand “ mean ?
Are English idioms more common in written English or spoken English ?
