Bamboo is one of the nature's most surprising plants.(1)许多人称这种植物为树,但它是一种草.

Bamboo grows almost everywhere in the world except Europe.(2)There are more than 1000 kinds of bamboo that grow around the world on both mountains and plains (平原).

Not all bamboo looks the same. Some bamboo plants are very thin. They may only grow to be a few centimeters wide while others may grow to more than 30 centimeters across. This plant also comes in different colors, from yellow to black to green.

Many Asian countries have been using bamboo for hundreds of years. They often use bamboo for building new buildings. As a matter of fact, the cables (绳索) that hold up the hanging bridge across the Min River in Sichuan are made of bamboo. The bridge has been in use for more than 1,000 years, and is still holding strong.

In Africa,(3)engineers are teaching poor farmers how to use bamboo to find water .These African countries need cheap ways to find water because (4 )they save no money, and their fields often die from no rain and no water. It seems that bamboo is one of the best things they can use.Bamboo pipes and drills (钻) can help to make the poor thirsty fields be watered.

Nowadays, there are more and more TV talent shows. they are very popular all over China.
These talent shows give everyone a chance(机会) to show off their talents. for some lucky people, these shows may make them famous, and can even make them rich. However, there are also many bad sides. First, some young people just imitate(模仿) the people they admire(钦佩 ) . They may forget about their own style. Second, young people spend too much time on such TV shows. They always dream of being a star. So they spend less time on their studies.
I think TV talent shows are social activities(社会活动 ). Young people can take part in these activities to get social experience(经验). But they should know that the chance of being famous is very small for most people and they should know that their schoolwork is much more important. In a word, you can do what you like, but you should know what is important and what is not.

Hi Grace,
How’s it going? Sorry I haven’t emailed for a while, but I had so much to do!
I had told you about my decision to take up a sport. I knew I wasn’t fit and I wanted to get some exercises. But that wasn’t the only reason that I decided to do a sport. Students who play sports do better at school.      Exercise also helps learning and memory .
First, I tried soccer. I had played a bit of soccer before and I thought it would be too bad. I knew I couldn’t run very long without feeling tired. On the first day, I was able to run for the first ten minutes, but then I was so tired that I couldn’t even kick the ball!
Then, I tried volleyball.  I was able to run for the first twenty minutes and I wasn’t the slowest runner in the team! After a few weeks, I could run faster and longer. I was doing better and feeling better.          Maybe I’m not a team sport person after all.
Finally, I tried kung fu . It’s a great sport that exercise the body and the mind. You learn to follow instructions carefully and do what you are asked to do. This is the right sport for me !       I feel so confident that I even showed some moves to the class last week. Can you believe it?
I hope you are OK! Write and let me know what you’ve been doing!
Bye for now!
Kristie

I’m Lisa. I’m a Chinese girl. I go to Canberra, Australia this month.   I stay there for about a month. I live with Mr. White, my dad’s old friend. His family members are very friendly to me. They take me to many places of interest in Canberra.   .
The schools in Canberra are a little different from those in China. There are about twenty students in each class.    Most students go to school by school bus. Classes usually begin at 8:00 in the morning and end at about 4:00 in the afternoon. Usually, students can sit anywhere they like in the classroom.  They often let the students talk about questions, or sometimes they play games with the students in class.     I think it is really happy to go to school in Canberra.
