It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, the moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don’t worry about them. Just continue as if nothing happened.
Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn’t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King’s famous speech—“I Have a dream”, you may notice that he stumbles(结巴) over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.
People care a lot about making a mistake in a speech because they regard speechmaking as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performance. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker’s ideas clearly and directly. Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker’s attractiveness by making him more human.
As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being perfect. Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.
The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will ______.
A.be smarter than you | B.notice your mistakes |
C.do better than you | D.know what you are talking about |
You don’t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because________.
A.your attention is on the content |
B.you don’t fully understand the speech |
C.you don’t know what the speaker plans to say |
D.you find the way of speech-making more important |
It can be inferred from the passage that________.
A.giving a speech is like giving a performance |
B.one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad |
C.the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made |
D.the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be |
What would be the best title for the passage?
A.How to Be a Perfect Speaker |
B.How to Make a Perfect Speech |
C.Don’ t Expect a Perfect Speech |
D.Don’t Expect Mistakes in a Speech |

The literal meaning of philosophy is “love of wisdom”. But this meaning does not tell us very much. Unlike the other disciplines(学科),philosophy cannot be defined by what you study, because it is actually unlimited. Anything can be the subject matter of philosophy: art, history, law, language, literature, mathematics, medicine, psychology, religion, science, and values. Philosophy is one of the world’s oldest subjects of study, and in fact, the other academic disciplines are directly related to philosophy. For this reason you get a Doctorate(博士学位) of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in biochemistry, or computer science, or psychology.
Two broad sub-fields of philosophy are logic and the history of philosophy. Logic is the science of argument and critical thinking. It provides sound methods for distinguishing good from bad reasoning. The history of philosophy involves the study of major philosophers and periods in the development of philosophy.
Of what use is philosophy? First it is useful in educational advancement. It is necessary for understanding other disciplines. Only philosophy questions the nature of the concepts used in a discipline, and its relation to other disciplines. And through the study of philosophy, one develops sound methods of research and analysis that can be applied to any field.
There are a number of general uses of philosophy. It strengthens one’s ability to solve problems, to communicate, to organize ideas and issues, to persuade, and to take what is the most important from a large quantity of data. These general uses are of great benefit in the career field, not necessarily for obtaining one’s first job after graduation, but for preparing for positions of responsibility, management and leadership later on. It is very short-sighted after all, to take a course of studies only for the purpose of getting one’s first job. The useful skills developed through the study of philosophy have significant long-term benefits in career advancement. No other discipline systematically follows the ideals of wisdom, leadership, and capacity to resolve human conflict.
According to Paragraph 1, philosophy can best be described as the study of______.
A.social sciences |
B.natural sciences |
C.both social and natural sciences |
D.the subject matter of politics |
With the study of philosophy, you can_______.
A.become a great leader |
B.succeed in everything |
C.find a good job soon after graduation |
D.make progress in your career development |
According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Philosophy is an independent discipline. |
B.Logic helps you to become a better thinker. |
C.The study of philosophy brings you immediate benefits. |
D.The meaning of philosophy is too limited to define. |
From the passage, we can conclude______.
A.not all the subjects have to do with philosophy
B.a person will get a Ph.D. if he/she studies philosophy
C.philosophy can be helpful for the study of any other subjects
D.philosophy is the only solution to all the problems to the world

I entered high school having read hundreds of books. But I was not a good reader. Merely bookish, I lacked a point of view when I read. Rather, I read in order to get a point of view. I searched books for good expressions and sayings, pieces of information, ideas, themes—anything to enrich my thought and make me feel educated. When one of my teachers suggested to his sleepy tenth-grade English class that a person could not have a "complicated idea" until he had read at least two thousand books, I heard the words without recognizing either its irony (嘲讽) or its very complicated truth. I merely determined to make a list of all the books I had ever read. Strict with myself, I included only once a title I might have read several times. (How, after all, could one read a book more than once?) And I included only those books over a hundred pages in length. (Could anything shorter be a book?)
There was yet another high school list I made. One day I came across a newspaper article about an English professor at a nearby state college. The article had a list of the "hundred most important books of Western Civilization." "More than anything else in my life," the professor told the reporter with finality," these books have made me all that I am." That was the kind of words I couldn’t ignore. I kept the list for the several months it took me to read all of the titles. Most books, of course, I hardly understood. While reading Plato's The Republic, for example, I needed to keep looking at the introduction of the book to remind myself what the text was about. However, with the special patience and superstition (迷信) of a schoolboy, I looked at every word of the text. And by me time I reached the last word, pleased, I persuaded myself that I had read The Republic, and seriously crossed Plato off my list.
On hearing the teacher's suggestion of reading, the writer thought________.
A.one must read as many books as possible |
B.a student should not have a complicated idea |
C.it was impossible for one to read two thousand books |
D.students ought to make a list of the books they had read |
The underlined phrase "with finality" probably means_________.
A.firmly | B.clearly |
C.proudly | D.pleasantly |
The writer's purpose in mentioning The Republic is to________.
A.explain why it was included in the list |
B.describe why he seriously crossed it off the list |
C.show that he read the books blindly though they were hard to understand |
D.prove that he understood most of it because he had looked at every word |
The writer provides two book lists to ________.
A.show how he developed his point of view |
B.tell his reading experience at high school |
C.introduce the two persons' reading methods |
D.explain that he read many books at high school |

I will never forget the year I was about twelve years old. My mother told us that we would not be Christmas gifts because there was not enough money. I felt sad and thought, “What would I say when the other kids asked what I’d ?” Just when I started to that there would not be a Christmas that year, three women at our house with gifts for all of us. For me they brought a doll. I felt such a sense of that I would no longer have to be embarrassed when I returned to school. I wasn’t . Somebody had thought of me to bring me a gift.
Years later, when I stood in the kitchen of my new house, thinking how I wanted to make my Christmas there special and memorable, I remembered the women’s visit. I decided that I wanted to create that same feeling of for as many children as I could possibly reach.
So I a plan and gathered forty people from my company to help. We gathered about 125 orphans (孤儿) at the Christmas party. For every child, we wrapped colorful packages filled with toys, clothes, and school supplies, with a child’s name. We wanted all of them to know they were . Before I called out their names and handed them their gifts, I them that they couldn’t open their presents every child had come forward. Finally the they had been waiting for came as I called out, “One, two, three. Open your presents!” As the children opened their packages, their faces beamed and their bright smiles up the room. The in the room was obvious, and wasn’t just about toys. It was a feeling – the feeling I knew that Christmas so long ago when the women came to visit. I wasn’t forgotten. Somebody thought of me. The Carnival of Brazil is an annual festival held 46 days before Easter, especially famous for the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Carnival celebrations are believed to have roots in the festival of Saturnalia, which, adapted to Christianity, became a farewell to bad things in a season of religious discipline to regret and prepare for Christ’s death and coming back to life. Modern Brazilian Carnival dates back to Rio de Janeiro in 1641. It originally copied the European form of the festival, later taking in elements of Native American and African cultures. In the late 19th century, the strings (弦乐器) were introduced in Rio de Janeiro. These were pageant (游行) groups that paraded through city avenues performing on instruments and dancing. Today they are known as blocks, consisting of a group of people who dress in costumes or special T-shirts with themes or logos. Blocks are generally connected with particular neighborhoods; they include both a music group and a lot of revelers(狂欢者). Block parades have become an expressive feature of Rio’s Carnival. Today, they number more than 100 and the groups increase each year. Blocks can be formed by small or large groups of revelers with a clear title. Before the show, they gather in a square, then parade in sections of the city, often near the beach. Carnival time in Rio is very interesting, but is also the most expensive time to visit Rio. Hotel rooms and other lodgings (住宿) can be up to four times more expensive than the regular rates. There are big crowds at some locations and life is far from ordinary in many parts of town.
What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A.The Carnival of Brazil is often held after Easter. |

D.blocks always parade only on the beach |

I fell in love with England because it was quaint(古雅)—all those little houses, looking terribly oldfashioned but nice, like doll's houses. I loved the countryside and the pubs, and I loved London. I've slightly changed my mind after seventeen years because I think it's an ugly town now.
Things have changed. For everybody, England meant gentlemen, fair play, and good manners. The fair play is going, unfortunately, and so are the gentlemanly attitudes and good manners—people shut doors heavily in your face and politeness is disappearing.
I regret that there are few comfortable meeting places. You're forced to live indoors. In Pairs I go out much more, to restaurants and nightclubs. To meet friends here it usually has to be in a pub, and it can be difficult to go there alone as a woman. The cafes are not terribly nice.
As a woman, I feel unsafe here. I spend a lot on taxis because I will not take public transport after 10 p.m. I used to use it, but now I'm afraid.
The idea of family seems to be more or less nonexistent in England. My family is well united and that's typically French. In Middlesex I had a neighbour who is 82 now. His family only lived two miles away, but I took him to France for Christmas once because he was always alone.
The writer doesn't like London because she________.
A.is not used to the life there now |
B.has lived there for seventeen years |
C.prefers to live in an oldfashioned house |
D.has to be polite to everyone she meets there |
Where do people usually meet their friends in England?
A.In a cafe. | B.In a restaurant. |
C.In a nightclub. | D.In a pub. |
The underlined part “it” (in Para. 4)refers to________.
A.a taxi | B.In a restaurant |
C.a bomb | D.public transport |
The writer took her neighbour to France for Christmas because he________.
A.felt lonely in England |
B.had never been to France |
C.was from a typical French family |
D.didn't like the British idea of family |

Dear Li Hua,
I’m familiar to your situation. As computers become more and more popular, some students cannot help but playing online games and chat. It is not only a problem of wasting time, but serious problem for their future! What you should do at first is to find out what make her addicted to computer games. Lack of love from parents? Poor score? Then having a heart-to-heart talk with her. Secondly, you should help herself with her study to build up her confidence and make her interesting in it. Thirdly, find something else for her to do instead computer games. Your efforts will surely help change her life.
Yours,
Jack
The air we breathe is freely available, without we could not survive more than a few minutes. For the most part, air is available to everyone, and everyone needs it. Some people use the air to sustain them while (sit) around and feel sorry for themselves. breathe in the air and use the energy it provides to make magnificent life.
Opportunity is in the same way; it is everywhere. It is so freely available that we take it granted. Yet opportunity alone is not enough to create success; it must (seize) and acted upon in order to have value. So many people are so (anxiety) to “get in” on a “ground floor opportunity”, as if the opportunity will do all the work. That’s (possible).
Just as you need air to breathe, you need opportunity to succeed. , it takes more than just breathing in the fresh air of opportunity. You must make use of it. That’s not up to the opportunity; that’s up to you. It doesn’t matter what “floor” the opportunity is on, but matters is what you do with it.
A businesswoman got into a taxi in midtown. As it was the rush hour and she was in a to catch a train, she a quick way to reach it. “ I have been a taxi driver for 15 years ! ” the driver said . “ You don’t think I know the best way to go?”
The woman tried to explain that she hadn’t to annoy him, but the driver kept . She finally realized that he was too annoyed to be , so she changed her .“ You know, you are right,” she told him. “ It must seem for me not to think you know the best way the city.”
, the driver glanced at his in the rearview mirror, turned down the street she wanted and got her to the train on time. “ He didn’t say another word the rest of the ride,” she said, “ I got out and paid him. Then he thanked me.”
When you find yourself with people like the taxi driver, you will always try to your idea. It can lead to longer arguments, lose job chances or marriage. I have discovered one simple extremely unlikely method that can prevent the disagreement or other difficult situations from in a disaster.
The is to put yourself in the other person’s shoes and look for the in what that person is saying. Find a way to , and the result may surprise you.
