A. Who does freelancing?
B. The advantages and disadvantages of freelance
C. The definition of freelance
D. Key to freelance success
E. What is freelancing really like?
F. The best way to develop a career
______________________
Freelance is a word that goes back to medieval times when it was used to describe soldiers who sold their skills to those prepared to pay their market rate. Today it’s an increasingly common way of working for people in a range of occupations and appeals to many who feel constrained by corporate culture.
______________________
What you gain is freedom of movement, what you can lose is a sense of belonging. You can end up feeling isolated from normal support networks, because suddenly you are responsible for your own welfare, training, safety, career development, equipment, professional updating and a thousand other things. It is easy to remain unaware of these things in the relatively cosseted existence of full-time employment. So before you leap up into this exciting and potentially rewarding way of working, stand back and take a look at the risks.
_____________________
Freelancing has always been a common way of working for writers, artists and performers, but the range of occupations with a substantial number of freelancers is growing steadily. Anyone with a marketable skill can choose to go it alone. Websites offer a free directory listing for those with skills to sell. Their categories include accountants, healthcare consultants, landscape architects and computer trainers. Areas of work that have problems recruiting staff are always keen to employ freelancers.
______________________
Being a freelance is different from other forms of self-employment—you still work for an employer or several employers but have to develop a completely different set of relationships with them. Employers are now your customers, you are their supplier. You have to become indispensable to them, providing solutions to their problems, some of which they may not even realize they have. In many ways you have to behave like their dream employee, being more willing and available than you may have got used to while in a “proper job”.
______________________
You also have to be aware of, and sensitive to ,the fact that you can be seen as a threat by your customer’s conventional employees, who may regard you as taking work they can do. Successful freelancing relies on the co-operation of everyone you come into contact with. Work that brings you into conflict with an existing workforce can be more trouble than it’s worth.
To be confident
Confidence of success is almost success. Here’s how to believe in yourself.
Remember that everyone struggles with confidence. Some people are good at hiding it, but nearly every person has struggled with his or her self-confidence at one point.
Accept compliment(恭维;敬意) politely. When someone compliments you, make eye contact, smile, and say “thank you”. It shows that you’re polite and have a secure sense of self-worth. If you’re still uncomfortable taking compliments, try giving one back after you’ve accepted one.
That’s a simple and an effective psychological technique to become confident. When you are talking louder you are sending the signal that you are confident, and as you make it as a habit you will feel more confident. But don’t be dominating(专横的).
Look the part. Or, as the saying goes, “Fake it till you make it.” Devote a little time each day to make sure you’re presenting yourself well. Keep your shoulders back, walk with purpose instead of dragging your feet, and sit up straight. Smile and make eye contact. It’s a small change, but it can work wonders on what other people think of you.
Develop your interests. If there’s a sport or hobby you’ve always wanted to be good at, now’s the time! Improving your skills will show that you are talented, and make you confident. Learn a musical instrument or a foreign language; take up an art form like painting----whatever it is that catches your interest. Remember that learning is a process, and you’re in it for the small victories and the relaxing time, not to be the best ever.
A.Make a list. |
B.You’re not alone! |
C.Talk a little louder. |
D.Stop comparing yourself with everyone else. |
E. Don’t get discouraged if you’re not immediately awesome.
F. This can help you feel like the score is “even” and you haven’t been too prideful.
G. If you know that you look like a confident person, eventually you’ll start to feel it, too.

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. Still others keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases hormones (荷尔蒙) which speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc.
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
____ They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “ Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry.
A.In general the person feels excited and ready to act. |
B.They said that laughter is much healthier than anger. |
C.Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it. |
D.Anger may cause you a cancer. |

Laurie Scott, Kate So, Molly Morris, Patsy Wincher和Joy Perryman各自打算加入一个志愿者组织,选出符合个人需要的最佳选项。
Laurie Scott and her husband have just moved to Las Vegas. They are looking for a way to get connected and involved in the community. Since their son is far away from home in college, they really want a member at their house to fight off the loneliness.
Kate So is a teacher of 38 years who also practiced law early in her career. She enjoyed being with children, so she left law and courts behind her and became a teacher. Now she wants to use her special knowledge to protect and help those abused children.
As a successful real estate agent, Molly Morris is now looking for a place to get involved with local youth and inspire others in her community, but also ones that encourage her to learn and grow on her own.
Being a victim of home violence herself, Pasty Wincher wants to provide services to those women who suffer from the same misfortune. She wants to use her own experience to tell them how to protect themselves and create their own happiness.
As a busy communications major at Northern Illinois University, it isn’t easy for Joy Perryman to find a volunteer opportunity that would work out. However, she is anxious to use her energy and major related skills to help where she could.
Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. So what exactly do you know about anger? Some people express anger openly in a calm, reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger. For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases some hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc.
So is there any solution? They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “ Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry.
A.Thus, the person feels excited and ready to act. |

This old saying calls attention to the wisdom of saving money. “Putting money away for a rainy day.” is another way to talk about saving for the future.
People who hate to spend money are known as “tightwads”, while those who like to get the most value for their money are called “thrifty”. A spendthrift is someone who spends wastefully. People like that are often said to spend money “like a drunken sailor” or “like there is no tomorrow”.
In the United States, people who want to start a savings account have different choices of where to put their money. Credit unions are cooperatives for people who have some kind of connection. For example, the members might work for a university or a government agency. Most credit unions are nonprofit organizations.
Credit unions, banks and other financial institutions pay interest on savings accounts. But the rates are low. Certificates of deposit (定期存款) pay higher returns. With Certificates of deposit, people agree not to withdraw the money for a certain period of time. This term could be anywhere from a few months to several years. People can withdraw the money early but they have to pay a penalty.(罚金)
In many countries, people have been saving less over the years. It is reported that in 2000, Americans had a household savings rate of 7%. Many European countries have higher rates, but Americans save more than families in Japan.
A.People are willing to save money for the future. |
B.Before gold, even kings take off their hats. |
C.A penny saved is a penny earned. |
D.Longer terms, and large amounts, pay higher interest. |
E.This year the rate is expected to be a little more than four percent.
F.These include banks and credit unions.
G.A thrifty person is different from a spendthrift.
Love, success, happiness, family and freedom ---- how important are these values to you? Here is one interview which explores the fundamental questions in life.
_______My name is Misbah, 27 years old. I was born in a war-torn area. Right now I’m a web designer.
_______My parents used to take us to hunt birds, climb trees, and play in the fields. For me it was like a holiday because we were going to have fun all day long. Those are my great memories.
_______Yes. As life was very hard, I used to work to help bring money in for the family. I spent my childhood working, with responsibilities beyond my age. However, it taught me to deal with problems all alone. I learnt to be independent.
_______My parents supported me until I came of age. I want to give back what I’ve got. That’s our way. But I am working in another city. My only contact with my parents now is through the phone, but I hate using it. It filters out your emotion and leaves your voice only. My deepest feelings should be pleased through sight, hearing and touch.
A lack of self-respect can prevent you from fulfilling your potential and developing healthy relationships. Here are some steps to help you know how to respect yourself.
__________ The qualities that we respect vary from person to person, and the way we express it varies from culture to culture. Generally, we respect people who have more experience and are more accomplished than ourselves. But there is also a basic level of respect that most people will agree is a right, and does not need to be earned. So think about what it means to respect others. Here are some widely agreed-upon signals of respect: You don’t steal from, harm, or insult them; you are honest with them; you listen to what they say, consider their opinions, and avoid interrupting them.
__________ We often do things for ourselves that we would never dream of doing for someone we care about. Whatever you believe to be respectful, apply it to yourself. Don’t harm yourself. Don’t insult yourself. Don’t steal from yourself. Be honest with yourself. Develop your own opinions and don’t be afraid to stand by them.
__________ A person with self-respect doesn’t allow others to treat them badly, and would rather not be around someone who is disrespectful. This might seem obvious, but there are many times when we accept being treated badly. When someone doesn’t give you basic respect, you need to be able to say, in one way or another, “You just disrespected me and that’s not acceptable!
If you don’t respect me, I won’t spend time with you any more.” Can you say that, and mean it?
Can you turn your back on someone who’s clearly shown that they don’t respect you? Once you do, you’ll feel your sense of self-respect go up.
__________ When you make an effort to keep your body in good working order, you’ll not only feel better physically, but also feel a sense of pride. Respecting your body also means not insulting it for what it is, naturally. Make an effort to get fit and stay healthy. Focus on the things you can change and improve, and do them because it feels good.
__________ The more you know about yourself, the more you’ll see and appreciate how unique you really are. And you’ll respect yourself more. Discover your principles, personality, and talents. Stop waiting for other people’s approval and start developing your own standards. Develop a unique and original way of expressing your opinions while at the same time being a good listener.
A.Get to know yourself. |
B.Take care of your body. |
C.Practice basic respect towards yourself. |
D.Be honest with yourself and with others. |
E. Think about what it means to respect someone.
F. Recognize when people disrespect you and take steps to stop it.

A. Name of the same history textbook. B. Benefits of sharing the same textbook. C. The origin of the idea of the same history book. D. The dislike for each other. E. The same history textbook in France and Germany F. Reasons for the hatred between France and Germany . |
High—school students in France and Germany are to learn modern history from the same textbook starting in the 2012 school year. It’s thought that the new book will help the next generation of the French and Germans develop a shared European identity. The book, called “Historie/Geschichte”, the French and German words for history, was co-written by historians from both countries. It will provide students from both sides of the Rhine(莱茵河) with the different explanations of their common history.
The idea for the books came about in 2008, when high school students from both countries celebrated the 45th anniversary of the Elysee Treaty(爱丽舍条约), a friendship agreement signed to show that France and Germany had buried their post—war differences. The students’ suggestion soon got strong support from both governments. “The big lesson is that hatred won’t last forever,” said French Education Minister Gilles de Robien. “This book allows us to create a shared future and build on our past,” he added.
However, the French and Germans both have their own different origins, styles and culture. According to a survey by leading French newspaper Le Figaro (费加罗报),the French regard Germans as being highly disciplined and hard-working, while the Germans see the French as proud and shallow. So they don’t like each other.
Conflicts between France and Germany have been existing over the years. The defeated power was robbed of its resources. Things were at the top in the two world wars, which further damaged relations. Many people lost their families, and hatred increased. Europe was seriously damaged by the conflicts.
The wars’ bitter lessons told the two powers that they needed to unite in order to rise to their feet. Now France and Germany have put an end to their age-old rivalry(敌对状态),and they try to work together as the engines driving Europe forward. “The book is another milestone in Franco-German relations,” Peter Miler, a German official said. He said that it’s the first time that two nations have sat down and written history together. “If France and Germany can do it, why shouldn’t other countries follow suit?”

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to Chinese students, they always say, "My spoken English is poor." I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.
Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal in speaking should be fluency not accuracy. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn't matter.
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive(被动反应的) rather than proactive(积极行动的) language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor.
A.The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for mistakes he hears. |
B.They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time. |
C.Obviously the better way is to expand their vocabulary. |
D.If you have proactive outlook(观点), then you will see English opportunities wherever you go. |
E. However, their spoken English does not have to remain poor
F. Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.
G. The second reason lies in the unwillingness of using what has just been learned.
How to Host a Successful Party
Everyone loves a party but when you’re the host, making sure the event goes as planned can be stressful. Before the big day, take some time to prepare well and you’ll have a better chance of throwing a successful party.
Pick a theme for your party. It doesn’t have to be anything complicated. A loved one’s homecoming, a wedding announcement, and a block party to meet the neighbors are only a few examples of party themes.
Send out the invitations. Generally, guests should receive their invitations two weeks before the party. If a guest will be traveling a long way, the earlier they get the invitation, the better.
If you’re hosting a party at home, look at your surroundings with a critical(挑剔的) eye. Put small articles away for a clean look and add some decorations to make the room more festive.
Plan your food list and shop ahead of time. If you’re the host, you will need lots of advance notice of your menu and the number of guests you are expecting.
Double-check the details the night before the party. Do a quick walkthrough, starting at your front door, and make sure there’s an area for guests’ coats. Finally, count your serving plates and glasses to make sure there are enough.
A.Create the proper atmosphere. |
B.Dress early for the party. |
C.But it should be related to the reason for having the party. |
D.Then walk through your home and make sure everything is fine. |
E. This gives them time to schedule the event into their time frame.
F. Allow time for guest arrival before serving a meal.
G. Dishes that are prepared in advance will save you much time.
