A firm handshake is the key to interview success. As any serious job-hunter knows, it helps to dress smartly and smile at that all-important interview. But research has showed that a firm handshake is what really matters when it comes to impressing potential employers.
A US research looked at 98 undergraduates taking part in mock(模拟)interviews with businesses. As each undergraduate was graded on their general performance, five “handshake raters(评估人)” also marked them on their grasp, strength, duration, vigor and eye contact.
Professor Greg Stewart, from the University of Iowa, who led the study, said those who scored highly with the handshake raters were also considered to be the most hirable by the interviewers. Students with “wimpy” shakes were judged to be more timid(胆怯的)and less impressive.
The study also found women with a firm handshake were likely to be evaluated more favorably than their male counterparts.
Professor Stewart said: “We’ve always heard that interviewers make up their mind about a person in the first two or three minutes of an interview. But we found that the first impression begins with a handshake that sets the tone for the rest of the interview. We don’t consciously remember a person’s handshake but it is one of the first non-verbal(非语言的)clues we get about the person’s general personality, and that impression is what we remember.”
Women were less likely to have a highly rated handshake, partly because traditionally they shake hands less than men. But when women did possess a firm handshake, they were likely to be evaluated more favorably than their male counterparts.
Body language experts warn, however, that the firmness needs to be just right, —as an overenthusiastic “bone crusher” handshake can indicate self-importance, a controlling personality and a lack of reliability.
The handshake is thought to have originated in medieval Europe as a way for kings and knights to show that they did not intend to harm each other and possessed no hidden weapons.
The passage is probably intended for_______.

A.job-hunters B.an undergraduate C.employers D.handshake raters

A.The firmer your handshake is the better impression you leave.
B.The undergraduates without a firm handshake are less competitive.

What is the main idea of the passage?

A.The handshake determines a person’s personality.
B.A successful job interview starts with a firm handshake.
C.The first few minutes of the interview really counts.
D.Job interview success depends on a number of factors.

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flow more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time.
Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!
Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.
B.Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.
C.Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.
D.Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.

From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______.

A.offered a ride to his home
B.treated hospitably at his home
C.treated to dinner in a restaurant
D.warmly welcomed at the airport

A suitable title for this passage would probably be “______”.

A.Americans’ and Chinese’s views of friendships.
B.Friendships between Americans.
C.Friendships between Chinese.
D.Americans’ hospitality .

Remembering names is an important social skill. Here are some ways to master it.
Recite and repeat in conversation.
When you hear a person’s name, repeat it.Immediately say it to yourself several times without moving your lips. You could also repeat the name in a way that does not sound forced or artificial.
Ask the other person to recite and repeat.
You can let other people help you remember their names. After you’ve been introduced to someone, ask that person to spell the name and pronounce it correctly for you. Most people will be pleased by the effort you’re making to learn their names.
Admit you don’t know.
Admitting that you can’t remember someone’s name can actually make people relaxed. Most of them will feel sympathy if you say.“I’m working to remember names better.Yours is right on the tip of my tongue. What is it again?”
Use associations.
Link each person yon meet with one thing you find interesting or unusual. For example, you could make a mental note: "Vicki Cheng -- tall, black hair.” To reinforce (加强) your associations, write them on a small card as soon as possible.
Limit the number of new names you learn at one time.
When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or three names. Free yourself from remembering every one. Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names. Another way is to limit yourself to learning just first names. Last names can come later.
Go early.
Consider going early to conferences, parties and classes. Sometimes just a few people show up on time. That's fewer names for you to remember. And as more people arrive, you can hear them being introduced to others -- an automatic review for you.
How will most people feel when you try hard to remember their names?

A.They will be moved. B.They will be annoyed.
C.They will be delighted. D.They will be discouraged.

If you can't remember someone's name, you may __

A.tell him the truth B.tell him a white lie
C.ask him for pity D.ask others to help you

When you meet a group of people, it is better to remember __

A.all their names B.a couple of names first
C.just their last names D.as many names as possible

What does the text mainly tell us?

A.Tips on an important social skill. B.Importance of attending parties.
C.How to make use of associations. D.How to recite and repeat names.

Everyone has got two personalities(性格)—the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don’t show your secret personality when you’re awake because you can control your behavior, but when you’re asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal night, of course, people frequently change their position. The important position is the one that you go to sleep in.
If you go to sleep on your back, you’re a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or new ideas. You don’t like to upset people, so you never express your real feelings. You’re quite shy and you aren’t very confident.
If you sleep on your stomach, you are a rather secretive(不坦率的)person. You worry a lot and you’re always easily upset. You’re very stubborn, but you aren’t very ambitious(有雄心的). You usually live for today not for tomorrow. This means that you enjoy having a good time.
If you sleep curled up(卷曲), you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and so you’re often defensive(提防的). You’re shy and you don’t normally like meeting people. You prefer to be on your own. You’re easily hurt.
If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well-balanced personality. You know your strengths and weaknesses. You’re usually careful. You have a confident personality. You sometimes feel anxious, but you don’t often get depressed(压抑). You always say what you think even if it annoys people.(words: 278)
According to the writer, you naturally show your secret and real personality _______.

A.He or she would rather be alone than communicate with you.
B.He or she is rarely ready to help you.
C.He or she prefers staying at home to going out.

Air travel makes some people very nervous. The crowds, the noise and flying itself can cause unease. But there are classes that people can take to help them defeat the fear of flying. And now we are going to talk about similar training for service dogs that suffer from the same problem.
Service dogs almost never leave the side of the people they care for. You will see them working on buses, trains and other public transport systems. But the busy environment in an airport can trouble even the best trained working dog.
People with disabilities depend on their dogs. They also need the dogs to remain calmly on duty on the airplane, even when the flight is not smooth. This takes special training. The Air Hollywood K9 Flight School is one place where such help can be found.
The school has a piece of equipment that provides the sights, sounds and even the feel of an airplane in flight. It is called a flight simulator(模拟器). The simulator was built for filming airplane scenes in movies.
Sandy Alexander lives in Newport Beach, California. He has a disability that requires his two-year-old dog, Doc, to be always at his side. Mr. Alexander took the dog to the flight school to get him ready for plane trips. He says Doc did not like the bumpy(颠簸的) part of the flight simulation. “When that started he was pretty agitated and looked up at me and wasn’t sure what was gong on.”
“Dogs need to be exposed gradually and repetitively to stimulation, to the environment, to loud noises, to sounds and other dogs so that when this experience happens to them on a daily basis, they are able to act in a way that they are used to acting and don’t get excitable,” days dog trainer, Mary Segall.
Dog owners who have attended the training say they now feel much more at ease about future flights. Their dogs also seem ready for take-off.
The flight simulator________.

A.can help people to learn how to fly an airplane
B.was built for filming airplane scenes in movies
C.can’t provide the feel of an airplane in flight
D.let service dog owners experience the thrill of flying

Memory, they say, is a matter of practice and exercise. If you have the wish and really make a self-effort, then you can quite easily improve your ability to remember things. But even if you are successful, there are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you.
Sometimes you remember things that did not happen. One morning last week, for example, I got up and found that I had left the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remembered locking it carefully the night before.
Memory “trick” works the other way as well. Once in a while you remember not doing something, and then find out that you did. One day last month, for example, I was sitting in a barber(理发师) shop waiting for my turn to get a haircut, and suddenly I realized that I had got a haircut two days before at the barber shop across the street from my office.
We always seem to find something funny in incidents(小事) caused by people’s forgetfulness or absent-mindedness(心不在焉). Stories about absent-minded professors have been told for years, and we never got tired of hearing new ones. Unfortunately, however, absent-mindedness is not always funny. There are times when “trick” of our memory can cause us great trouble. (words: 169)
If you want to have a good memory, ________.

A.you should force yourself to remember things
B.you should make a self-effort of practice and exercise
C.you should never stop learning
D.you should try hard to remember things

Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.One night the writer forgot to lock the front door.
B.One night the writer forgot having locked the front door.
C.The writer remembered to lock the door.
D.The writer remembered unlocking the front door.

From the sentence "We never get tired of hearing new ones", we can infer that______.

A.we enjoy hearing new stories about absent-mindedness of professors
B.we don’t want to know anything more about absent-mindedness of professors
C.we will never get rid of(摆脱) listening to new stories about absent-mindedness
D.absent-mindedness happens not only to professors but to many other people

Maybe you’ve just invented something better than the iPhone or a solar-powered car. You don’t want anyone to steal your design. What should you do? Patent (申请专利) it! Patents are the best way to get credit for your work and help others continue advancing in that field. Here’s what you need to know.
A patent gives you the right to an invention. The patent protects its owner, which means the invention can’t be copied or sold without their agreement. In exchange, the owner must reveal information about the invention. This contributes knowledge that helps other inventors improve on their own research. A patent usually lasts about 20 years.
The first step to getting a patent is the application. The person applying must name the invention, explain its use and describe it clearly. The invention must be practical and contain some new characteristic — something that hasn’t been seen or used before. But not everything “new” can be patented. Many countries don’t allow patents on things like new concepts, scientific theories, medical procedures or substances already found in nature.
You may not be able to see patents, but they’re connected to nearly everything. There are patents on things you use every day, like plastic, medicine and your computer. There are patents on things that are unavailable on the market, too. Apple is well-known for its patents on potential products, such as the “iBike” or the “iKey”.
Of course there are also patents on inventions like this. Take the anti-eating face mask for example. This device locks around your head with a metal cage covering your mouth. You can breathe and speak, but you can’t eat!
Although many patented inventions can be failures, there’s plenty of room for success. So if you have a cool invention, try to patent it.
Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?

A.A patent can last for around 20 years.
B.Everything new can be patented.
C.Your invention is protected after you have applied for a patent.
D.Some patents are on the things that we use every day.

We can infer that Apple’s iBike is _____.

A.a popular product B.a mere new concept
C.a famous brand in the world D.a practical bike on the market

The underlined word “device” in Paragraph 5 can best be replaced by “_____”.

A.weapon B.medicine C.equipment D.strength

The purpose of writing this passage is to _____.

A.advertise B.persuade C.warn D.inform

In recent months, a catchy song, A Little Apple, has become such a hit that it has even inspired square-dancing troupes(团) to mimic(模仿) its music video.
When Old Boys: The Way of the Dragon, an adventure comedy featuring the song, was released on July 10, the unusual publicity strategy was applauded. Ticket sales of Old Boys: The Way of the Dragon surpassed 150 million yuan in the first week of hitting the big screen.
Interactive online campaigns involving fans have become a popular way to promote a movie. The first two episodes(集) of Tiny Times, the directing debut(处女作) of author, Guo Jingming, made 800 million yuan at the box office last year, in spite of criticism for its portrayal(描绘) of lavish(奢华的) lifestyles. Before the third episode was shown, fans donated a small sum of money online as “investors” in the movie. Some of the people who donated received film souvenirs, or the chance to visit the film set.
Han Han, Guo’s major competitor, has just released his directorial debut, road-trip comedy, The Continent. Han has over 38 million followers on Sina Weibo, China’s major micro-blogging platform. He has broadcast the filming process of the movie to his followers since he began shooting. The film’s trailer(预告片)was released online in May, only three days after shooting and it has been viewed 4.7 million times.
“I don’t care too much about the surprising numbers online, and what matters more is whether the movie is good or not,” Han once said.
However, when he invited popular singer, Pu Shu, to write the closing song for the movie, he must have had another idea in mind.
Pu, who has been away from the public eye for some 11 years, also brings a new element for the movie claiming to be devoted to young people. The song became very popular as soon as it was released online.
No one knows what other trump cards will be thrown on the table during the tense online campaign this summer.
How does the author develop the text?

If you go into the woods with your friends, stay with them. If you don’t, you may get lost. If you do get lost, this is what you should do.
Sit down and stay where you are. Don’t try to find your friends — let them find you. You can help them to find you by staying in one place.
There is another way to help your friends or other people nearby to find you. Give them a signal by shouting or whistling(吹口哨)three times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times again. Any signal given three times is a call for help. You will be helped by others.
Keep up the shouting or whistling, always three times together. When people hear you, they will know that you are not just making noise for fun. They will let you know they have heard your signal. They will give two shouts, two whistles or two gunshots. When a signal is given twice, it is an answer to a call for help.
If you don’t think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house and cover up the holes with branches with lots of leaves and grass. What should you do if you get hungry or need to drink some water? You should have to leave your little branch house to look for a brook. Don’t just walk away. Pick off small branches and drop them as you walk so that you can find your way back.
The most important thing to do when you are lost is — stay in one place.
How do you let people believe that you are not just making noise for fun?

A.Stop now and then.
B.Go on shouting or whistling.
C.Shout over and over at the top of voice.
D.Shout or whistle three times once a while.

If nobody answers you after your signal, what should you do then?

If you feel thirsty when you are lost in the forest, what should you do?

A.Go and find a brook.
B.Light a fire and make yourself some tea.
C.Go to find a brook and leave marks behind you.
D.Find something to hold the water.

The most frightening words in the English language are, “Our computer is down.” You hear it more and more when you are on business. The other day I was at the airport waiting for a ticket to Washington and the girl in the ticket office said, “I’m sorry, I can’t sell you a ticket. Our computer is down.”
“If your computer is down, just write me out a ticket.”
“I can’t write you out a ticket. The computer is the only one allowed to do so.”
I noticed every passenger was just standing there drinking coffee and staring at the black screen. Then I looked down on the computer and asked her, “What do all you people do?”
“We give the computer the information about your trip, and then it tells us whether you can fly with us or not.”
“So when it goes down, you go down with it.”
“That’s good, sir.”
“How long will the computer be down? I wanted to know.”
“I have no idea. Sometimes it’s down for 10 minutes, sometimes for two hours. There’s no way we can find out without asking the computer, and since it’s down it won’t answer us.”
After the girl told me they had no backup computer, I said. “Let’s forget the computer—What about your planes? They are still flying, aren’t they?”
“I couldn’t tell without asking the computer.”
“Maybe I could, just go to the gate and ask the pilot if he is flying to Washington,” I suggested.
“I wouldn’t know what gate to send you to. Even if the pilot was going to Washington, he couldn’t take you if you didn’t have a ticket.”
“Is there any other airline flying to Washington within the next few hours?”
“I wouldn’t know,” she said, pointing at the dark screen. “Only ‘IT’ knows. It can’t tell me.”
By this time there were quite a few people standing in lines. The words soon spread to other travelers that the computer was down. Some people went white, some people started to cry and still others kicked their luggage.
Where do you often hear the frightening words “Our computer is down”?

A.at the airport. B.At the gate.
C.On business D.In the ticket office

What could the girl in the ticket office do without asking the computer?

One evening, I was in a ward(病房), desperately “hunting” for the final three patients I needed to complete my study. Holding a patient questionnaire, I walked towards a room. A patient called Ms A was lying in bed, clearly still weak. There were no relatives or friends with her. Even the bed beside her was empty. I sat down on a chair next to her bed, and in a low voice I introduced myself and asked if I could gather some additional information from her. She agreed. After I finished, I prepared to leave. Before I could stand up, Ms A said, “I haven’t seen you here before, doctor. Are you new?” “Not really, Madam. It’s just that I don’t come here every day,” I replied. Ms A started talking about herself. She shared her difficulties and sufferings, talked about her husband, who was killed in a car accident, and that she struggled to earn money. All I did was nod my head as a way of showing my sympathy.
Without realizing it, I had begun holding Ms A’s hand. Finally, Ms A stopped talking. “I’m very sorry for keeping you here to listen to my problem, but I feel relieved now. I had no one to pour out my problems to.” Tears fell from the corner of her eyes. Finally, I knew what to say. “It’s OK, Madam. It’s part of my duty.” I stood up and waved goodbye. A few days later, when I returned to the ward, I discovered Ms A had left the hospital as her condition had improved.
Ms A taught me the most important lessons a doctor can learn. Sometimes patients do not need expensive medicine. They just need someone with the patience and willingness to lend an ear and spare a little of their time.

I live in north Celebes which is near Philippines. Since early December 2010 most tropical regions have been frequently hit by rain. Just like my hometown, tropical regions only have two seasons, including the dry season that usually starts from April to September and the wet or rainy season which usually happens from October to March. But, it could be indeterminate. Sometimes the rainy season can come a month earlier or later. It can be prolonged even more than 4 months and so can the dry season. Even during the dry season, rain can occur several times in certain areas.
The prolonged dry season in tropical areas usually causes a lot of losses. It will be very harmful to local farmers, because most of the tropical areas sre regions of the developing countries. Sometimes agricultural and plantation crops will be damaged because of so much dry land and the fact that the river used to flow the water for rice fields are also dry. Rain is very important for plants because rain contains many nutrients that plants are in great need of.
What’s more, if the prolonged rainy season arrives and then floods usually occur in certain areas of low lands. Even for the capital city of Jakarta floods have struck several times during the prolonged rainy season. In addition to floods, the rainy season can cause many diseases. During the dry season, diseases are usually caused by mosquitoes such as dengue fever. While in the rainy season, people who have the weak immune will be more easily attacked by some diseases such as flu, fever, diarrhea, and much more.
If you live in the other places and want to travel to the tropical regions, make sure that you have known much about the season and the effect for these months in which you want to travel as tourists. Only in that way, can you at least prepare to deal with tropical weather.

The second paragraph mainly tells us something about _____.

A.the effects of the dry season. B.the benefits of the rainy season.

A.the capital of Jakarta is flooded every year
B.more crops will die after being flooded for so long.
C.mosquitoes will spread more diseases among the crowd.
D.people with weak immune might be attacked by some diseases
