In the first week after arriving in the new city for further study, I fell and broke my leg. I was really 36 by the kindness of my new roommate. “We are family now,” she said when she 37 me lying in my room with a swollen(浮肿的) 38 , unable to move. She took me to the nearest 39 by taxi to get my leg examined. The driver was so 40 that we arrived there very quickly. After that, my 41 didn’t stop helping me though I told her I could do things on my own.
So many blessings(幸事) I had never 42 came to me when I was alone and helpless. Bus drivers picked me up 43 anywhere they saw me. Many people 44 the door for me. Such things were small but 45 for a person on walking sticks.
46 people’s kindness, I did whatever I could to make people 47 . I made many jokes about my two 48 and the bad fall. And I tried not to 49 even a single time about what had happened. I also tried to be kind to 50 students who were injured. I took time to 51 with a girl in a wheelchair who always ate lunch alone.
I soon realized that pain can be 52 by mental (精神上的) power. I could see that 53 I was using physical sticks, there were hundreds of mental sticks I could depend on. I also saw that sometimes 54 situations could be good. Einstein once said, “You can live your life seeing nothing as a miracle( 奇迹 ) 55 seeing everything as a miracle.”

At least thirty times Bobby has attempted to climb the big snowy mountain, but he had never reached the top. His friend old Peeper, who knew a lot about his failures, 26 Bobby to try again. He gave Bobby a pair of 27 and said, “If it starts clouding over, put on the glassed, or if your feet start hurting, put them on too. The glasses are very 28 . They’ll help you.” Bobby accepted the gift without much thought.
The day came when he was to have another try. About two hours after he started, he felt his feet hurting. Then he 29 what Peeper had said, and put on the glasses. The pain was pretty bad, but 30 the sunglasses he could see the snow-covered mountain top, so he went on.
31 , clouds were gathering. But this time Bobby could still see the 32 through the clouds. He kept climbing, leaving the clouds behind, forgetting his pain, and finally arriving at the top. It was certainly worth it. His feeling of 33 was extremely good, almost as great as that 34 view. The mountain below was surrounded by a sea of clouds. He couldn’t that the clouds were as 35 as that, so he looked more closely at the sunglasses, and discovered the secret. Peeper had engraved (镌刻) the snow-covered mountain top on the sunglasses, 36 Bobby could see it when he was looking upwards!
Bobby 37 that the only obstacle (障碍) to reaching the top had been losing 38 when he couldn’t see the mountain top. He was thankful that Peeper had used that little 39 to help him see that his 40 was never impossible, and that it was still there, where it had always been.

My l4-year-old son, John, and I spotted the coat which was hanging at a secondhand clothing store in Northampton Mass. While the other coats drooped, this one looked as if it were 36 itself up. The coat had beautiful tailoring, a Fifth Avenue label and a(an) 37 price of $28, which was popular just then with 38 , but could cost several hundred dollars new. This coat was even better, bearing that 39 of classic elegance. John tried it on and the fit was perfect.
John 40 the coat to school the next day and came home wearing a big smile "Did the kids like your coat?" I asked. "They loved it," he said, 41 folding it over the back of a chair and smoothing it flat. Over the next few weeks, a 42 came over John. Agreement replaced contrariness and reasoned discussion replaced fierce 43 . He became more mannerly and 44 , eager to please. He would generously loan his younger brother his tapes and lecture him 45 his behavior.
When I mentioned this incident to his teacher and 46 what caused the changes, she said laughing. "It 47 be his coat!" Another teacher told him she was giving him a good 48 not only because he had earned 49 but because she liked his coat. At the library, we ran into a friend “Could this be John?" he asked surprisingly, 50 John's new height, assessing the cut of his coat and extending his hand, one gentleman to another.
John and I both know we should never 51 a person's clothes for the real person within them. 52 there is something to be said for wearing a standard of excellence for the world to see and for 53 what is on the inside to what is on the outside.
For John it is a time when it is as easy to try on different approaches to 54 as it is to try on a coat. The whole world, the whole future is stretched out ahead, a vast landscape 55 all the doors are open. And he could picture himself walking through those doors wearing his wonderful, magical coat.

It’s only after three weeks into a new job that I made a serious mistake. My boss called it “extremely embarrassing” in a company-wide e-mail — which, 11 , he wrote because he felt he needed to explain that what I did was something 12 in the company should ever do. I wish I 13 give a good excuse for what I did. At the very least, I wish I could explain it somehow — 14 it on youth, inexperience or ignorance. Unfortunately, I’m 15 , experienced and I know better.
16 I work with some very kind and compassionate (富于同情心的) people. For the past couple of days many of them have taken time to 17 by my desk and offer comfort, encouragement and support. Some have shared with me similar 18 they have made. Evidently I’m not the only “ 19 ” person here.
One of the exchanges I had this week was with Lois, the much-honored, much-respected professional who 20 the desk right next to mine. Lois was completely 21 about her work, and to be honest I was a little nervous about how she would 22 to such an extremely embarrassing incident.
As I expected, Lois didn’t pass over the 23 when she saw me the next day. She mentioned it directly, 24 with empathetic consideration. She listened to my 25 . Just as I was ready to express my regrets, she brought my self-pity partly to a(n) 26 .
“It happened”, she said, “There’s nothing you can do to 27 that. It happened. But it’s over now. It’s 28 . It’s in the past. You need to let it go, and move on.” And with that she returned her 29 to her work, as if to say, “We’re done here.”
I beat myself up for weeks. At such times I need to remember those 30 words: It’s over. It’s done. Let it go. And mostly, move on.

Last year, I lost my best friend in high school. It seemed that everyone else’s life could just continue on in its 36 way, but mine couldn't. I wasn't sure how I was going to be able to face 37 and their gossip at school. I was forced to 38 my routine on Monday morning as usual. In the evening I returned home from school 39 completely defeated. All I wanted to do was 40 into bed and wallow(沉迷于)in my own self-pity. I pulled back the covers on my bed and 41 a pile of cards left by my dad. Each card included a(n) 42 that it was to be opened on a 43 night that week.
I made it through that week 44 my father. Each card 45 to say just what I needed to hear. Tuesday’s card said, “The past is painful to think about and the 46 is impossible to imagine. Don't try. Just take it one minute at a time.” On Wednesday my mood 47 when I read, “What you are feeling now is 48 and normal. It still feels very bad, but it is part of the healing 49 .” Friday’s card contained a poem he wrote. The last lines made me smile through my tears. “Whatever special 50 you face along life’s way, may you 51 that you will find the best in every day.” I was instructed to open the last card 52 the party I went to on Saturday night. In it he wisely reminded me to 53 . “The world isn't so bad after a good laugh. The more you laugh, the more you heal.” Each card was signed, “Love, Dad.”
My world once collapsed (fell down) but I 54 the difficult breakup eventually. It owed to my dad, who made his 55 known when he couldn't be present.

In 1982, Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. He was out of the sailing track and floating in a lifeboat, alone. His supplies were 36 . His chances of surviving were small. 37 when three fishermen found him seventy-six days later, he was alive — much 38 than he was when he started, but alive.
His 39 of how he survived is interesting and attractive. His subtle act — how he 40 to catch fish, how he evaporated sea water to 41 fresh water — is very interesting. But the thing that 42 my eye was how he managed to keep himself going when all hope seemed lost, when it seemed no 43 continuing the struggle, when he was 44 greatly, when his lifeboat was pierced and after more than a week’s struggling with his weak body. He was starved and 45 exhausted. Giving up would have seemed the only sensible choice.
When people 46 these kinds of circumstances, they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keep going. Many people in 47 dangerous circumstances give in or go mad. Something the survivors do with their thoughts helps them find the courage to carry on 48 major difficulties.
"I tell myself I can 49 it," wrote Callahan in his book. "Compared to what others have been through, I'm fortunate. I tell myself these things over and over, 50 courage and strength."
I wrote that down after I read it 51 it struck me as something important. And I've told myself the same thing when my own goals seemed 52 off or when my problems seemed too powerful. And every time I've said it, I have always come back to my senses.
The truth is, our circumstances are only bad 53 to something better. But others have been through much worse, that is, in comparison with what 54 have been through, you're fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over again, and it will help you 55 the rough spots with a little more perseverance(毅力) .

When we talk about a wolf, we tend to describe it as a kind of fierce creature. But is it true that the wolf stands for devil(魔鬼) and ugliness?
Have you read the book "The Wolf Totem'' 《狼图腾》by a famous writer Jiang Rong, which tells the story of the relationship between wolves and human beings? Have you ever 51 the wolves' world? If you had, you would __52__ the wolves. In the book, wolves are heroes on the large grassland. They know more about __53__ than humans. They can attack sheep without disturbing their mothers. The wolf is a kind of special creature that can deeply understand __57__. Each wolf serves its group with its heart and soul. A __58__ wolf has little power, but a group of wolves __59__ nothing. All the wolves obey the rules. __60__ they are beaten, they run away together. It is their teamwork __61__ makes wolves powerful.
The wolves also have great self-preservation and won't __62__ to anyone. The writer, who wrote the book “The Wolf Totem”, __63__ stole a one - month - old baby wolf and raised it very carefully. To his __64__, he found the little wolf still wanted to go back with __65__ wolves. The little wolf bit through the iron chain that limited it. The wolf was __66__ and never gave up fighting __67__ its death. It seemed that the little wolf died as a glorious fighter.
I was shocked by this kind of __68__ wolves which are one of the most respected creature on the earth. I want everyone to look at wolves in a __69__ way. They are our teachers. They show us how to survive and __70__ this not simple but dangerous world. Please honor the wolves, please honor all these heroes of nature!

Night after night, my mother came to my bed, even long after my childhood years. She would 21 down and push my long hair out of the way, and then kiss my forehead. I don’t remember when it first started 22 me-her hands pushing my hair that way, for they felt work-worn and rough 23 my young skin. Finally , one night, I shouted out at her, “Don’t do that any more-your hands are too rough!” she made no 24 and left quietly. But never again did my mother do it with that familiar expression of her 25 .
With the passing years, my 26 returned to that night time after time. By then I 27 my mother’s hands and her goodnight kiss. Sometimes the incident seemed very 28 , sometimes far away, but always it was 29 in the back of my mind.
The years have passed, and I’m not a little girl any more. Mom is in her seventies, and those hands I once 30 to be so rough are still doing things for me and my family.
Now, Mom no longer has Dad and lives 31 . One night on Thanksgiving Eve, I found myself 32 to her house to spend the night with her. As I slept in the bedroom of my youth, a familiar hand hesitantly ran across my face to 33 the hair from my forehead. Then a 34 , ever so gently , touched my forehead. I burst into tears.
In my memory, thousands of times, I 35 the night my young voice complained. Catching Mom’s hand in hand, I told her how 36 I was for that night. I thought she’d remember 37 I did. But Mom didn’t know what I was talking about. She had already forgotten and 38 long ago.
That night, I fell asleep with a new 39 for my gentle mother and her caring hands. And the guilt that I had carried around for so long was 40 to be found.

June was lying by the Olympic size swimming pool in her new swimsuit. She was really hot and dived into the water. 1 else was in the pool. I first met Sean one summer day. He carried a bag 36 with four clubs(球杆) and some balls. He was a lot 37 than other kids of his age. I heard he was 38 from cancer. Still , he always seemed to be smiling whenever I would see him with his friends, trying to 39 as far as he did.

The simplest way to say it is this: I believe in my mother. My belief began when I was just a kid, who 36 becoming a doctor.

With our 40 time, we had to read two books each from the Detroit Public Library and 41 written book reports to her. She would mark them up with check marks and highlights. Years later we realized her marks were a 42 . My mother was illiterate(文盲).
When I entered high school, I was a 43 student, but not for long. I began to like fancy clothes. I wanted to 44 other guys. I went from an A-student to a B-student to a C-student. One night my mother came home from her various jobs and I 45 about not having enough Italian knit shirts. She said, “Okay, I’ll give you all the money I 46 this week scrubbing floors and cleaning bathrooms, and you can buy the family food and pay the bills. With the money 47 , you can have all the Italian knit shirts you want.” I was very 48 with that arrangement but once I got through allocating(分配)money, there was 49 left. I realized my mother was a financial genius(金融天才)to be able to keep the roof over our heads and any kind of food on the table, let alone buy 50 . I really realized my desire wasn’t going to get me 51 . Success requires intellectual preparation. I went back to my 52 and became an A-student again and eventually I 53 my dream and I became a doctor.
My story is really my mother’s story—a woman with 54 formal education who used her position as a parent to change the lives of her children. There is no job 55 than parenting. This I believe.

I can still remember the first day when I met my best friend. I hid behind my mother and she hid behind her grandmother, 36 to look at each other. But we soon lost the 37 and started playing with each other. In the 7th grade, I first lost touch with her. She was going through family problems and I deserted her to be with the “cooler people”. 38 of my new friends liked her as much as I did because they knew she had “problems”. However, every summer we would 39 sit at each other’s home and watch soap operas and talk about everything we liked.
It was last year when I noticed the problem. I guess I was just too busy in high school to realize she needed someone there for her. Well, she made a new “best friend” and 40 did I. Then I didn’t know why, but she started cutting herself.
She was diagnosed with clinical depression(抑郁症). I was very 41_ at first, but with the late night calls, we still stayed in touch. I wanted to be there for her since her new best friend 42 deserted her. When people were calling her 43 , I knew I still 44 her like a sister.
Yesterday she came 45 me and said this,” I never knew what a best friend was 46 I found you were the only person that would stop me from cutting, the only person that ever made me feel better about myself and my 47 . You don’t know this but I was trying to kill myself one night when you 48 me. I owe you so much, and you didn’t even know you were 49 me.” We both cried. And I guess a kind of lesson from my life so far is to never 50 your friends.

My name is Scott and I am 36 years old. I have spent most of my adult life doing an 41 job, so I had a very cynical (愤世嫉俗的) view of life and the world around me. I saw no point in trying to 42 my life or the lives of the people around me.
Two years ago my wife 43 me to return to school and work toward a career where I would find satisfaction. So I entered Long Beach City College to pursue a 44 in history. Last term I took a political science class. The 45 Dr. Rock had such a great effect on me. He 46 in the Air Force, worked in the U.S. nuclear program and served in the White House. When I asked another instructor 47 someone who was so overqualified worked at a small community college, she 48 told me because he wanted to.
This 49 me, so I asked Dr. Rock himself why he did not pursue a better role in his career. What he told me has changed my 50 forever. He told me that by working at the college he would be able to 51 the kinds of students he believed would make a 52 in the world. He said that 53 the right motivation and support, the students he taught could become the future leaders of our country. He said that he preferred the inner city 54 because the students there showed the 55 promise and cared deeply for their education.
Dr. Rock paid attention to the needs of the community. He taught me how to care and 56 us to take part in our community in any way we 57 .
I thought that I was the 58 one that was affected by his lessons, but at the end of the term I found that the entire class had felt the same 59 that came over me. Dr. Rock taught us how to 60 our country, our community and ourselves.

My father was in the navy, which meant that my mother was married to both my father and the sea. As was often the case, we had to pack our belongings into boxes and 36 those we had grown to love. We would arrive at our new home and find ourselves once again 37 at the pier(码头)waving good-bye to my father as his 38 pulled him away from us. My mother would turn my brother and me around before the ship was out of 39 , wipe our tears, and take us back home to start the process of 40 in the new environment again.
Throughout the years of changing 41 , schools and friends, there remained one constant in my childhood — my mother. For both my 42 and me, she was the cook, maid and teacher. She played these roles while 43 some type of part-time job. Leaving a promising career is just one of the 44 which my mother made for my family as we moved around the world with our father every three years or so. 45 she had to deal with only a small budget, my mother 46 managed to make each house to be the very home that is safe and 47 .
This probably sounds like a depressing way to live, 48 with two small children: “single” parenthood, short-term friendships, and the inability to 49 a career or establish a home. But it was not for my mother. She turned this 50 into adventure for us all! Each relocation was a chance to 51 another part of the world. My mother greeted each new culture, climate and neighborhood. Each new house was a 52 to rearrange furniture, make curtains and 53 pictures. Every part-time job was an opportunity to learn something new and work with interesting people.
No matter how difficult the life was, she was always having a 54 attitude. She always had strength in the face of struggle and change. My mother was so 55 all those years of my childhood — she was my island in a sea of change. She is my hero.
