Are you a man or a mouse? When people ask this question they want to know 31 you are a 32 person or a coward(懦夫). But you will never really know the answer to this question 33 you are tested in real life. Some people 34 they are brave but when they come face to face with real 35 , they act like cowards. Others think of themselves as cowards, but when they meet danger, they act like 36 .
Lenny had always thought of himself as a 37 person. He got worried before examinations. He worried about his job and health. All he wanted in life was to be safe and healthy. 38 , on January 15th, 2002, a plane crashed into the Potomac River in Washington. Lenny went to the river to see what was happening. He saw a woman in the 39 water. Lenny did not feel afraid. He kept very 40 and did a very dangerous thing. He jumped into the Potomac, 41 to the woman, and kept her head 42 the water. Seventy-eight people died that day. Thank to Lenny, it was not 43 .
When you are in a very 44 situation and feel afraid, the body automatically produces a chemical in the blood. The chemical is called adrenalin(肾上腺素). 45 adrenalin in the blood system, you will feel stronger and stronger and are 46 to fight or run away. However, when you are absolutely terrified, the body can produce too much adrenalin. When this 47 , the muscles become very hard and you find you 48 move at all. You are then paralyzed(使瘫痪,使麻痹) with fear. This is 49 when we are very frightened, we sometimes say we’re “petrified”, which means “stone”. We are very frightened 50 we become stonelike.

I found out one time that doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I was 36 the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final 37 . During the test, the girl 38 next to me whispered something, but I didn’t understand. So I leaned(倾斜) over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me 39 I had an extra pen. She showed me that 40 was out of ink and would not write.I happened to have an extra one,so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.
Later, after the test papers had been 41 the teacher asked me to 42 in the room when all the other students 43 . As soon as we were alone, she began to talk to me about 44 it meant to grow up;she mentioned how important it was to stand 45 your own two feet and be responsible for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about __46 _and emphasized the fact that when people do something dishonest, they really 47 themselves. She made me promise that I would think 48 about all the things she had said. Then she told me I could 49 . I walked out of the room wondering 40 she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.
Later on,I found out that she thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me lean over to talk to the gir1 next to me, it looked 51 I was copying answers 52 the girl’s test paper. So I came to find her and tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed very strange to her that I hadn’t 53 anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. 54 I tried to explain that I was just doing the girl a favor 55 letting her use my pen, I was sure she continued to believe that I had cheated on the test.

“Dash” is a symbol which represents every day we’re spreading alive on earth. Therefore, how you spend your “dash” is important.
Recently I 1 about a little girl named Hope. After learning more about her life, I couldn’t help but feel it was not by 2 ,nor happenstance, that she had been named “Hope”. The strong feeling of sympathy and generosity 3 in her young heart made a lasting impression on me and countless others. 4 I never had the opportunity to meet her, I wish I had. It seems as though she was beyond her tender years and very, very special. Hope was a twelve-year-old girl who was 5 a “wish” in early December 2010 by the “Make-A-Wish” Foundation after being 6 that she had a rare type of bone cancer. However, when she found out that more than 150 7 in her area like her were waiting for their wishes to be granted, she unselfishly used her wish to 8 that those children have their wishes granted. She also hoped that it could be done 9 January 16, 2011.Unfortunately, however, the organization told her that her 10 request couldn’t be granted as the funds were simply 11 . They calculated that they would need to raise more that one 12 dollars in thirty days in order to grant her wish. 13 , but not discouraged, she turned her disappointment into an enthusiasm that inspired warm-hearted 14 to take up helping grant the wishes of the other children, and eventually 15 as well. Newspaper columnists and reporters for radio and TV stations 16 the story of this 17 young girl who had touched the hearts of so many and as word spread, the community was challenged. Committees were fanned and schools, corporations and various organizations assisted in 18 money to help make Hope's dream come true.
Her efforts were not in vain as they continued to help others, not only 19 , but spiritually and emotionally as well. At the gathering to celebrate her life, “A Celebration of Hope” on January 16,2011, the 20 was made that they had indeed received donations totaling more than one million dollars. Her wish had been granted!

Dash of Hope

Recently I 36 about a little girl named Hope. After learning more about her life, I couldn’t help but feel it was not by 37 , nor happenstance(意外事件), that she had been named “Hope”. The strong feeling of sympathy and generosity 38 in her young heart made a lasting impression on me and countless others. 39 I never had the opportunity to meet her, I wish I had. However, when she found out that more than 150 42 in her area were waiting for their wishes to be achieved , she unselfishly used her wish to 43 that those children have their wishes granted. She also asked that it be done 44 January 16, 2011. Unfortunately, however, the organization informed her that her 45 request could not be granted as the funds were simply 46 . They calculated that they would need to raise more than one 47 dollars in thirty days in order to grant her wish. 48 , but not discouraged, she turned her disappointment into an enthusiasm that inspired caring 49 to take up helping grant the wishes of the other children, and eventually 50 as well. Newspaper columnists and reporters for radio and TV stations 51 the story of this caring young girl who had 52 the hearts of so many and as word spread, the community was challenged. Committees were fanned and schools, corporations and various organizations assisted in 53 money to help make Hope’s dream come true.
Her efforts were not in vain as they continue to help others, not only 54 , but spiritually and emotionally as well. At the gathering to celebrate her life, “A Celebration of Hope” on January 16, 2011 , the 55 was made that they had indeed received donations totaling more than one million dollars. Her wish had been granted!
