My family moved to our neighborhood when I was about ten years old.One day,I was playing in the garden in the neighborhood. When I looked up,I saw a girl about my age looking at me about ten feet away.As I just moved there,I didn’t have any friends yet.I wanted to make friend with her.So I walked up to her and said“hello”.She looked very shy.I told her my name was Alice. She said she was Yumi. Then I asked her if she wanted to play with me and she said “yes”.But before we started playing, she said,“I hope you don’t mind playing with someone who is really shy.”I shook my head and smiled after hearing that.
We both had a very good time that day,and we played together almost every day in the following days. Then school was going to start,.I asked her which school she was in.When I found out the school she was studying in ,I told my parents that I also wanted to go to that school. My parents agreed. When I told her the good news, she was so joyful that she almost cried..
We went to school together every day.She wanted to make more friends, but it was difficult for her.I made friends very easily,so I always had her by my side.I also encouraged her to try to make some new friends by herself. She tried. As time went by,she was no longer as shy as before and finally made some new friends without my help.
I moved away with my family two years later. Now Yumi has made a large number of friends and I am so happy for her.

He  seems  an  unlikely  hero,  especially  one  that  would  save  a  kid  from  the  jaws  of  a  wild  cougar  (美洲豹)  .
Shen  Huigang  is  just  now  getting  recognition  for  his  bravery  in  fighting  off  a  cougar  on  Vancouver  Island,  Canada,  during  a  family  outing  on  Aug  .30.
Shen,  also  known  as  Ian,  was  then  an  exchange  student  at  Kwantlen  Polytechnic  University  enjoying  the  afternoon  on  a  beach  near  Ucluelet,  a  small  town  on  the  edge  of  the  Pacific  Ocean.
With  him  was  a  friend,  Myles  Hagar,  and  Hagar’s  two  grandchildren.
Silently  and  suddenly  a  cougar  appeared  out  of  nowhere.
By  the  time  the  two  adults  spotted  the  cat,  believed  to  be  young  but  still  weighing  30  to  35  kilograms,  it  already  had  the  head  of  18-month  old  Julien  in  its  mouth.  Instinctively﹙本能地﹚,  the  young  man  gestured  as  if  he  were  ready  for  a  fight,  and  tried  to  scare  the  beast  off  with  the  bag  in  his  hands.
On  hearing  the  noise  Shen  made,  the  animal  dropped  the  kid  and  Hagar  grabbed  his  grandson  from  the  cougar’s  jaws.  Shen  and  Hagar  gradually  chased  the  animal  back  into  the  woods.
“We  also  moved  slowly  to  our  vehicle,  as  we  waved  our  fists  and  bags,  pretending  we  wanted  to  fight  with  it,”  Shen  said.  “The  vehicle  wasn’t  far  away  but  it  felt  like  it  took  us  a  century  to  travel  the  short  journey.”
“Any  hesitation,  at  any  moment,  even  a  second  delay,  would  have  resulted  in  certain  death  for  Julien.  The  cougar  was  just  about  to  break  his  neck  and  carry  him  away  to  be  eaten  in  the  forest.”  Hagar  said.  Julien  has  since  made  a  full  recovery.
Parks  Canada  spokeswoman  Arlene  Armstrong  told  the  National  Post  newspaper  of  Canada  in  an  interview  in  August.  “The  two  men  acted  properly  by  maintaining  eye  contact  with  the  big  cat  and  aggressively  scaring  it  off.”

[1] Recently, a friend and I were discussing common courtesy (礼貌) in terms of meetings, coffee dates, lunches, and so on. She was eagerly on the hunt for a job at that time. But she said she always waited in vain, with emails not returned and, sometimes, silence.
[2] She knows that people get busy, but isn't there _________________ to let someone know he or she is going to miss your meeting? You're busy, but you should promise to give feedback in a few days when things settle down. I would rather hear the truth than be left in silence and wonderment.
[3] As I was thinking about common courtesy in meeting with people, a friend of my friend asked me to meet for coffee. I obliged happily. We met for coffee and talked about her recent online startup company—ideas flowed out of me. I had fun and the hour flew by.
[4] Next day, I was sitting at my desk working when a beautiful vase of flowers was delivered to me. I looked at it, wide-eyed.
[5] I opened the card and it just said, "Thank you for the ideas!" It was such a simple gesture. but it meant so much to me and literally brightened my day, Although she didn't need to do anything to make our chat worth my while, she definitely went above and beyond as a nice person who also said. if she could ever help me, she would.
[6] It is mutually (相互地) beneficial. Sometimes we help each other, and sometimes you are helped, and I feel that both should happen. I have to be careful about how much time and energy I spend away from my projects. My sleep and my time, so I can' t even always say"yes", although I have tried to. (1)To build an incredible and successful relationship is something like erecting a building. First of all, you should start with the idea of building such a relationship, and then you can put a solid foundation stone for that idea. Putting a strong foundation stone is very important and it keeps your building steady. Every part of that building is totally depending upon that solid foundation. So, here are the three rules to establish a successful relationship:
(2)The first rule is just having fun. Once relationship is established then the things become stable. Once it gets stable then you start feeling stifled (压抑的) and fun is no longer there in your relationship. But remember this thing is very dangerous for relationship. You can plan something great like a weekend road trip. Even you can also plan some of your favorite activities at least twice a month. Enjoy laughing with each other and try to find different ways to keep this laughter alive.
(3)The second rule is giving respect to each other equally. In relationship it is important that both the partners should deserve equal treatment. If anyone of the partners dominates to the other then such relationship is surely not going to survive for a long time. Such relationships are called unbalanced relationship and it is going to give lots of pain. So, try to give respect to each other equally.
(4)The third rule is always to be open and honest with each other. Another good and important part of any relationship is being honest and open-minded with your partner. Whenever the problem arises in your relations, honesty is very crucial. Even being open-minded with each other is a foundation to your good relationship. Honesty is a most valuable thing. If you are open and honest with each other, then problems can be very easily sorted out.
(5)You need put lots of efforts to build a successful relationship. This effort is required from both the partners. And the reward which you are going to get will be fantastic. If the three rules mentioned above are maintained very well then there will be a strong chance of long term and wonderful relationship.

Studying Abroad
Nowadays, studying abroad gains popularity in China. Many rich parents would rather send their children abroad to receive education than let them be educated in China.
As every coin has two sides, studying abroad is not an exception (例外). There are advantages for people to attend school abroad. In the first place, he can use the foreign language in his daily life so that his ability in the second language may be greatly improved, as it is obvious that there is no better chance to improve second language than living in the country where it is spoken. While studying in a foreign country, he will most likely meet many others from overseas and it is possible to make friends from all over the world, This is not only exciting on the social level, but could lead to important overseas contacts in his career as well. He can get familiar with the latest knowledge in science and make use of the first-rate facilities (设备) available. In this way, there is every chance that he is able to widen his horizons (眼界) and broaden his mind.
Of course, attending schools abroad may bring about a series of problems. The most serious problem is language barrier (障碍). Most of the students who go abroad don’t have enough skills in the language spoken there. As a result, on arriving there, they will find it difficult to understand what the teachers say. Besides, for lack of knowledge of the customs of the local people, they may constantly run into trouble in dealing with various situations.
Therefore, given an opportunity to attend a school abroad, one must consider both sides of the factors carefully before making up his mind.

at the language spoken there, they will have difficulty in
          what the teachers say.
·It is not easy for them to deal with cross-culture communication
to lack of knowledge of the customs of the locals.

Making friends can be difficult, especially these days with so many peer pressures. If you want to develop a more pleasing personality and make friends, become genuinely(真正地) interested in other people and show kindness. You may be wearing the latest designer label clothes, the hottest brand shoes and the coolest jewelry, but if you display sourness and selfishness you’ll have a battle ahead of you to make good friends.
Smile...smile and continue to smile. It costs nothing, enriches those who receive it, happens in a flash but the memory lasts forever;it creates happiness in the home and classroom. A smile can not be bought, begged or borrowed,it comes from the heart. If you want other people to like you, make the other persons feel important, and do it sincerely!
Choose your friends carefully. If others try to persuade you to smoke, take drugs, steal, gamble, fight etc...dare to say NO. Doing the wrong thing is the quickest way to lose friends, especially honest, good and upright friends.
Being mentally strong is not always easy but let me assure you that the more you practise it, the easier it becomes. Soon those who thought they were trendy will want to dress like you, talk like you and be with you because you have a personality which is different. People like being different! By being an individual with your own personality you can achieve the very best experiences in your life. You may not ever have many friends but let me tell you that it is better to have one good friend than ten dishonest friends who will stab you in the back at the very first opportunity that arises.

Women make better drivers than men for many reasons. Why is that? Wouldn't you think that competing at who has better driving abilities is pointless(无意义的)? If you ask me, I'd like to say, men know that women are better drivers but do not have the courage to admit the truth.
Unlike men, women stop for directions when they have no idea where they are going. Women don't drive around for hours pointlessly wasting a tank of gas only to find themselves heading in the wrong direction. Have you ever been in a car with a man who is lost? He tells you to shut up when you begin to open your mouth. And every five minutes or so he takes a turn going forty-five miles per hour only to find out he's made another wrong turn.
Speeding is what men do best on the road. Traffic is not a race. There is a reason why men get more speeding tickets than women. Not because women trick to get out of tickets but only because they don't speed. Women don't risk putting their own lives and the lives of others in danger. In other words, they have more responsibility(责任) for life.
My largest issue with male drivers is how a majority of them drive with one hand on the wheel and the other hand doing only God knows what. The seat is backed as far as possible. They're totally lost in loud music beyond a necessary level. You don't ever see women driving like that.
I feel that the above evidence more than proves my points that women are queens of the road. Oh ,men, if you want to continue criticizing women for being bad drivers, bring it on. We know you lack confidence, or else you wouldn't be wasting your valuable time making jokes about the ones you may choose to spend the rest of your days with.

Chinese parents are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the US or Australia. They also want their children to take extra course activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is.So parents will spend unreasonable amount of money on education.Even poor couples will buy computers for their sons or daughters.
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best education they can give to their children is usually very cheap.
Parents can see that their children’s skills vary, skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today’s children lack self respect and self confidence.
The reasons are that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills: they need to be confident, happy and clever.
Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life.Cooking demands patience and time.It is an enjoyable but difficult experience.A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of confidence. These activities are not only teaching a child to work, but rather to think, and to use his mind. And that is more important.

Basic Math introduces students to the basic concepts of mathematics, as well as the fundamentals of more tricky areas. These 30 fantastic lectures are designed to provide students with an understanding of arithmetic and to prepare them for Algebra(代数) and beyond.
The lessons in Basic Math cover every basic aspect of arithmetic. They also look into exponents(指数), the order of operations, and square roots. In addition to learning how to perform various mathematical operations, students discover why these operations work, how a particular mathematical topic relates to other branches of mathematics, and how these operations can be used practically.
Basic Math starts from the relatively easier concepts and gradually moves on to the more troublesome ones, so as to allow for steady and sure understanding of the material by students. The lectures offer students the chance to “make sense” of mathematical knowledge that may have seemed so frightening. They also help students prepare for college mathematics and overcome their anxiety about this amazing—and completely understandable—field of study.
By the conclusion of the course, students will have improved their understanding of basic math. They will be able to clear away the mystery of mathematics and face their studies with more confidence than they ever imagined. In addition, they will strengthen their ability to accept new and exciting mathematical challenges.

Financial setbacks in the form of pay cuts are having a trickle-down effect(涓滴效应) as the depression persists.Families across America are cutting or even axing kids’ allowances(零花钱) to reflect what’s going on with household finances and the economy as a whole.
Some jobless parents are doing it out of necessity.Other parents are using allowance adjustments to teach children about economic realities and how to budget in learner times.
‘Try to use relevant news to explain the reasons behind the depression and how it’s hitting home.If they see it obvious in their own allowance, they’ll feel the impact and see how it all ties in,’ says financial consultant Antwone Harris.
Any reduction in allowance should be understood in age-appropriate communication, says Dr.Tony Meyer, a child psychiatrist(精神科医生) and medical director of Aurora Psychiatric Hospital.Six- to 12-year-olds are mature enough for a frank talk, but don’t set them back with a lot of details. It’s sufficient to say their allowance is lower because Mom or Dad is getting paid less at work, so there’s less money for the family to spend. With 12- to 18-year-olds, you can broaden the discussion to include the banking crisis and other factors that contributed to the depression, Meyer says.Younger kids have the idea that they’re at the center of things, and adolescents by mature are especially self-concerned.‘They’ll think they’re responsible,’ Meyer says.
A cut in allowance might seem punishing, so the message that the child is not at fault needs to come across.Depending on the child’s age, ‘You can also ask them to bring some income by working a job or helping more around the house so Mom or Dad can work more,’ he says.Kids can also contribute by means of taking over landscaping services previously done by a paid professional.‘You’ll pay lower rates, and the money stays in the family,’ financial consultant Antwone Harris remarks.Meyer also suggests implementing a stimulant program to cut household expenses.Anyone who comes up with a cost-cutting idea get 10 percent of the savings.
That way, they’ll come to understand that a paycheck only goes so far, and decisions and sacrifices are part of responsible money management.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN EIGHT WORDS.)
___________ is American families’ response to the financial depression.
What are both jobless and other parents using allowance adjustments to teach their children about?
When communicating with 12-to 18-year-olds about reduction in allowance, parents can broaden the discussion through ________.
Besides ‘working a job or helping more around the house’, what are the other two suggestions put forward by Meyer to bring some income to kids?

How do you keep a library when you’ve got no room for your books? With rising rents and record numbers of young people having to move with their parents, it’s clear that we are a moving generation.
As a student in Leeds I moved three times in four years; in London it was seven times in three years. Regularly having to load our possessions into laundry bags and boxes takes a lot of our finance and energy, but the effect on our book collections is rarely considered.
Keeping a collection of beloved books in a damp flat with no shelves, which you’ll probably have to move out of in six months’ time, is a challenge. Deciding which books to keep and which to reject becomes increasingly difficult. Do you hold on to the books you know you’ll reread or do you keep the to-be-read pile intact (完好无损的) ?
Donating books to a charity shop or local school may be virtuous, but when you haven’t had time to read them since your last move, it becomes depressing. There’s a copy of Much Ado About Nothing I’ve been moving around with for nearly a decade because it is the only piece of Shakespeare in the marketplace.
“Just buy a Kindle!” you might argue — but for many people, books are more than just books. They offer us an emotional connection to the past, to the person who gave them to us. They are a way to brighten up a dark flat, they are a link to home; they are the hardest thing to move and the most enjoyable thing to unpack.
So what if you are already facing your second move this year and can’t bear the thought of pensioning off more of your beloved books? You start reading more. Read all the books in your current bedroom and work out if they’re worth the trip; give away as many books as you can; leave books with trusted friends to be reclaimed at a later point. Start looking at your books creatively.
Why has the moving generation appeared? (no more than 15 words)
While moving, why do people often ignore their book collections? (no more than 10 words)
What makes the author keeps a copy of Much Ado About Nothing? (no more than 10 words)

Why do Americans struggle with watching their weight while the French, who consume rich food, continue to stay thin? Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers conclude that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over.
According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers’ markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal.
After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women .Don’t Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym.
In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity among adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17% — and is growing.

Statuses(身份) are part of human inventions that help us get along with one another and determine where we “fit” in society. As we go about our daily routines, we mentally attempt to place people in terms of their statuses. For example, we must judge whether the person in the library is a reader or a librarian, whether the telephone caller is a friend or a salesman, and so on.
The statuses we take often vary with the people we meet and change throughout life. Most of us can quickly adjust our statuses that various situations or occasions require. Most of social interaction(互动) consists of identifying and selecting among appropriate statuses and allowing other people to take their statuses in relation to us. This means that we fit our actions to those of other people based on a constant mental process of judgment. Although some of us find the task more difficult than others, most of us perform it rather effortlessly.
A status has been compared to ready-made clothes. Within certain limits, the buyer can choose style and fabric (衣料). But an American is not free to choose the costume of a Chinese peasant or that of a Hindu prince. We must choose from among the clothing presented by our society. Furthermore, our choice is limited to a size that will fit, as well as by our pocketbook(钱包). Having made a choice within these limits we can make certain changes, but apart from minor adjustments, we tend to be limited to what the stores have on their racks(衣架). Statues too come ready made, and the range of choice among them is limited.
What is the function of statuses ?     (not more than 15 words)
