Being yourself refers to not trying to copy anyone or do what isn’t your nature. Then what does it take to be yourself?First, you must know yourself inside. Looking inside is the key to knowing your positive aspects. If you yourself aren’t clear about who “YOU” are and what your personal analysis is, you’ll come to a dead end. It’s essential to be comfortable with yourself and think positively.
Once you’ve done a self analysis, it’s time to focus on this material world. Think about what you basically want to do and achieve in life. Make it clear to yourself what you like and do not like and what your passion (激情) is in your life. If you dislike something, don’t try to like it just because your best friend is fond of it. Focusing on your passion and interests will keep you positive.
Honesty is the best policy for being yourself. Be honest and express what you feel but make sure that you do not hurt others. Wherever you can speak out freely without holding anything back, it is best to be honest. That adds character to your personality and is essential for being yourself in a relationship as well.
Be confident but don’t be overconfident. You have to believe in what you do and what you want. If you hesitate, getting up and giving it your best shot with full confidence is what matters. Moreover, you should have faith in yourself. If you know who you are, it would not matter much what the whole world thinks of you. But that won’t mean that you have unrealistic expectations from yourself.
Understanding how to be yourself does not at all mean that you focus only on your inner self. I mean that your external (外在的) appearance also matters a lot. If you are poorly dressed or wearing your dad’s old T-shirt, no one would come and talk to you. So one needs to dress well and look good. Unless people come and talk to you, they would not know what kind of person you are. In a word, you need to have a combination of inner beauty and a smart appearance.

Food is life; it gives us the nourishment(营养)we need to stay alive and be healthy.   1  Britain Wansink, a professor at the University of Illinios, says we also eat certain foods because they make us feel good, and remind us of happy memories. Wansink calls this kind of food comfort, for some people, ice cream is a comfort food. For others, a bowl of noodle soup makes them feel good.

Culture shock is a special disease for people who have suddenly moved to a foreign country.     .
Culture shock is caused by the anxiety that results from losing all familiar signs of social communication.    When to shake hands and what to say, when we meet people, when and how to give tips, how to do shopping, when to accept and refuse invitations, when to take statements seriously and when not. These signs, which may be words, gestures, facial expressions, or customs, are acquired(获得) by all of us in the course of growing up and as much a part of our culture as the language we speak or the beliefs we accept.      .
Now when a person enters a strange culture, all or most of these familiar signs are removed. No matter how broadminded will you may be, a series of supports have been knocked from under you, followed by a feeling of failure in much the same way. “The ways of the host country are bad because they make us feel bad.” When foreigners in a strange land get together to complain about the host country and its people, you can be sure that they are suffering from culture shock.
Another phrase of culture shock is regression(退化). The home environment suddenly becomes very important. To the foreigner, everything becomes unreasonably beautified. All the difficulties and problems are forgotten and only the good things back home are remembered.       .

A.Nowadays a lot of people work at home.
B.The children are taught to respect different cultures .
C.Like most illnesses, it has its own symptoms(病症) and cures.
D.It usually takes a trip home to bring one back to reality.

E. First they reject the environment which causes discomfort.
F. Those signs include many ways in which we are used to the situation of daily life.

Making Peace with Your Parents
As a teen, you’re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are expanding.     .
Here is the challenge: Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that are out in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses. Sometimes conflicts can’t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.
For instance, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted, or hungry. A good time to talk is when you’re all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you’d better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation --- for now.   . Listen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you’re listening.    .
Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about each others’ feelings can disagree without things getting ugly.
. How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you’re going to do. Some teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget that parents are more than rule-makers --- they’re interesting people who like to watch movies, and go shopping --- just like their teenagers!
What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be rocky?    . You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear.
Remember you can only change your own behavior. You parents are the only ones who can change theirs.

A.It also gives them a chance to clear things up if you’re not on the same page.
B.You can pick it up again when everyone’s more relaxed.
C.And then you’ll be able to accept what your parents say.
D.Faced with the challenge, children don’t know what to do.

E.You are more likely to get along with your parents and have more independence if your parents believe in you.
F.And your desire to take control of your own life is growing.
G.You may consider seeking outside help.

For thousands of years the most important two buildings in any British village have been the church and the pub. In fact, until a place has a church and a pub,it isn’t really considered a community worthy of a name. Traditionally, the church and the pub are at the heart of any village or town, since it is where people gather to give and receive news. In fact, the word ‘pub’ is short for public house’.
That's how it used to be, but things are beginning to change. It is said that the credit decline is causing 39 British pubs a week to go out of business. People don’t have lots of spare money to spend on beer. Recently, the UK government banned smoking in all pubs, and that may also have affected the number of customers going to pubs.
This decline is happening despite the fact that in 2005 the UK government started to allow pubs to stay open after 11 p. m. Previously, with 11 p. m. as closing time, customers would have to drink quite quickly, meaning they sometimes got more drunk than they would if allowed to drink slowly. The British habit of drinking a lot very quickly is known as ‘binge drinking’(狂饮),and it causes some long-term health problems for people and problems with violent crime for communities. The UK government is changing the law to discourage binge drinking, and regularly spends money on television advertisements to warn people of the problems of drinking too much.
In order to save their businesses, pubs are trying to change with the market. Now, there are a number of different types of pubs.

Things are changing for the better probably from now on.

As you can see, British pubs now offer something for everyone. A lot of pubs used to be working men’s clubs, meaning that women could not usually enter. Today, however, women can freely enter 99% of pubs without experiencing any problems. Perhaps things are changing for the better after all.

Third-generation mobile phones, known as 3G, are the next big step for the telecom industry. Data speed in 3G networks is much quicker than that in present technology. This means users can have high-speed Internet access and enjoy video and CD-quality music on their phones.
“Mobile data is not a dream; it’s not an option but a requirement,” said Len Lauer, head of a US communications company, Sprint PCS, at a 3G conference in Bangkok earlier this month.
With 3G, you can forget about text messages telling you yesterday’s news; a 3G phone can receive video news programs, updated four times a day. Internet access will also be much quicker, making it easier to surf the Web on your phone than on your computer at home.
Face-to-face video calls
Don’t worry about getting lost. 3G phones offer map services so you can find a new restaurant just by pressing a few keys on your handset.
However, the most impressive part of 3G technology is video calling. With live two-way video communication, you can have face-to-face talks with friends and family on your mobile phone.
Many European countries have already launched the service. In May 2000 the US Government issued five license to run 3G wireless services, while the first 3G phones arrived in Italy in March this year.
International telecom companies can’t wait to sell 3G in China, the world’s largest mobile telecommunications market. But they will have to be patient. At the moment, China is busy testing its 3G-based technologies, networks and services. This will be followed by a trial period before the phones can finally hit the shops.
“We need to create a pool of 3G customers before the large-scale commercial launch of the service,” said Fan Yunjun, marketing manager for Beijing Mobile. “We expect that the 3G licenses will be issued late next year.”

Some people seem to pick up new vocabularies, master rules of grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners, we may discover a few of the techniques which make language learning easier for them.
First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher; they discover their own way to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their mistakes.
Success language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language; they look for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate.
They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things; they are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.
Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practice using the language at regular intervals because they want to learn with it.

Manners in every country are different.  What is polite in China may not be polite in the United States. These basic rules will help you enjoy Western food with your American friends.
Always put the napkin (餐巾 ) on your lap first. Before you leave the table, fold your napkin and put it beside your plate.
Wait until everyone has been served to begin eating. Everyone begins to eat at the same time. The host or hostess may invite you to start eating before everyone is served. Some foods may be cold if you wait until everyone is served. If invited to begin before others are served, wait until three or four people have been served before starting to eat,
When eating something in a bowl, do not leave the spoon in the bowl.  Put it on the plate under the bowl. Do not slurp (出声地喝) the soup. Do not overfill the spoon. Do not pick the bowl up to hold it closer to your mouth. When you have finished your meal, place your knife and fork side by side on the plate. This signals that you have finished eating.
Sit up straight at the table. Bring the food up to your mouth. Do not bend down to your plate.
Cut large pieces of meat, potatoes and vegetables into bite-sized pieces. Eat the pieces one at a time.
When eating noodles, wind (缠) the noodles up on your fork. You may use your spoon to help wind the noodles around your fork. The noodles on your fork should be eaten in one bite(一口).  It is very impolite to eat half your noodles and allow the other half to fall back on your plate.
Do not lean on your arm while eating. You may rest your hand on the edge of the table.
Some of the rules mentioned here may be somewhat relaxed in informal settings.
The best way to learn good manners is to watch others. Observe the way your American friends eat. In this way, you won’t make mistakes when you are unsure of what to do.

Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extend do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?
In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be
more self-absorbed or self-concerned.
Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences
. In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.
Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer, either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.
In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficially relationship with others.

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here is how.
1). Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you can have to do. After making the list, you should make a schedule of your time. First time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time fro entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
2). Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room. Free from everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
3). Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what your teachers say.
4). Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teachers mentioned in class. If you want to know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material in advance. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
5). Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.
