During the years of depression(萧条), food and money were very hard to find and people had to trade things with each other.
One day I was  36   some potatoes from Mr Miller. I noticed a small poor boy hungrily   37  a full basket of freshly picked green peas. Then I was  38   to see that Mr Miller sold the boy a bag of peas for just a marble (弹球).
Mrs Miller, who had been standing nearby,   39_ and told me that Mr Miller loved to trade with the three boys in the village for peas, tomatoes, and other things  40   he didn’t really need any marbles. I left the stand, smiling to myself,   41   by this man.
Several years went by. One day I learned that Mr Miller had died. I took part in the funeral(葬礼),  42_  three young men . They came over to Mrs Miller, hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke with her and moved on, _43_ their eyes.
Our _44_ came to meet Mrs Miller. I mentioned _45   she had told me about the _46. She told me, “Those three young men above were the boys I told you about. They just told me  47  they appreciated the things Jim ‘traded ’with them. Now, at last, they came to pay their debt.”
“We’ve _48   had a great deal of the wealth in this world,” she _49_, “but right now, Jim wouldW#W$W%.K**S*&5︿U consider himself to be the _50_ man.”
Then she gently lifted the  51   fingers of her husband. Resting underneath were three red marbles.
At that time I realized that we would not be  52    by our words, but by our kind  53  . It is said that it takes a minute to find a  54  person, an hour to appreciate him, a day to love him, but an entire life to 55   him.

“ Are you all sick ?” I asked. “ Yes,” the woman said _37_and lowered her head. But when it came to telling me about their_38_ ,things got a little surprising. They all seemed to be well and there was nothing _39_ with their body.
Why did they tell a _40_that they were all sick? I did not say anything but _41_ that it might be a little time before a doctor could _42_ them . The mother said,“Take your time.We can _43_ here. It’s so warm.” When she finished the register chart , I noticed she didn’t write down their address----were they _44_ ?
I looked at the _45_ around the Christmas tree. The children were excited and _46_ to be healthy. The littlest one was pointing at the Christmas tree and say something to the mother. Then I was sure that they came here not because of _47_ but only for warmth.
I went back to the nurses’ station and _48_ the homeless family. The nurses, _49_ about working on Christmas Day like me, turned to feel sorry for the family and decided to _50_.

Just recently I had been wondering if there was much point in doing little acts of kindness. So often they get   36  , and occasionally they come back to bite you!
Then, just last week, after a long travel, I found myself   37   at a bus station. The bus was four hours late! So, I guess I wasn’t in a good   38  .
That’s when a woman asked me if I had any spare   39   to help her get a bus ticket.
“Oh, sure,” I said sarcastically (挖苦地). “How much would you like?”
As I spoke, I mentally kicked myself for my  40   and reached into my bag for some money. As I handed her five dollars, I heard low sounds from her stomach because of real    41  .
I reached back into my bag and brought out a   42   I had bought earlier. I handed it to her with a(n)   43   that I hoped would make up for my earlier tone of voice. Getting a   44   look at her now, I realized she was extremely tired, like she had had several months of   45   days!
As she took the food, a look of   46   washed over her. In return, she tried to give me a Milwaukee bus ticket! I don’t live in Milwaukee and the ticket will probably   47   be used, but I took it.
A few minutes later she came back over, apologized, and told me she was still  48   of five dollars. I took some singles out of my bag and slipped a twenty in there as well.   49  , the voice in my head told me I was being a fool.
Five minutes later she came back again and tried to   50   my twenty. When I said it was for her so she could get something else to   51  , and that I was completely serious and I wasn’t taking it   52  , she started crying and hugged me.
From now on, when I wonder if it is   53   trying to help someone, I will remember that woman. Maybe I am really making a   54   for someone. So, sure, sometimes my efforts might not be noticed, and sometimes they might come back to bite me, but they might actually   55   another human being!

He met her at a party. She was outstanding; many guys were   36   her, but nobody paid any attention to him. After the party, he invited her for coffee. She was surprised. In order not to appear   37  , she went along.
As they sat in a nice coffee shop, he was too   38   to say anything and she felt uncomfortable. Suddenly, he asked the waiter, "Could you please give me some   39  ? I'd like to put it in my coffee."
They stared at him. He turned   40  , but when the salt came, he put it in his coffee and drank.   41  , she asked, "Why salt with coffee?" He explained, "When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea. I liked playing on the sea ... I could feel its taste salty, like salty coffee. Now  42   I drink it, I think of my childhood and my hometown. I   43   it and my parents, who are still there."
She was deeply touched. A man who can admit that he's homesick must love his home and   44   his family. He must be responsible.
She talked too, about her faraway hometown, her childhood, her family. That was the start to their love story.
They continued to   45  . She found that he met all her   46  . He was tolerant, kind, warm and careful. She would have missed the catch if not for the salty coffee!
So they   47   and lived happily together. And every time she made   48   for him, she put in some salt, the way he liked it.
After 40 years, he passed away and left her a letter which said:
My dearest, please   49   my life-long lie. Remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous I asked for salt instead of   50  .
It was hard for me to ask for a   51  , so I just went ahead. Many times, I tried to tell you the truth, but I was afraid that it would   52   everything.
Sweetheart, I don't exactly like salty coffee. But as it   53   so much to you, I've learnt to enjoy it. Having you   54   me was my greatest happiness. If I could live a second time, I hope we can be together again,   55   it means that I have to drink salty coffee for the rest of my life.

I’ve always had strong opinions of how love should be expressed, but others had their own ways of showing care.
What I   36   most about visiting my boyfriend’s parents is the loud tick of the clock in the dining room as we   37   ate our meal. With so little conversation I was quick to   38  his family as cold. When we got into the   39   to go home, his father suddenly appeared. 40   , he began to wash his son’s windscreen. I could feel he was a caring man through the glass.
I learned another lesson about love a few years later. My father often  41   me early in the morning. “Buy Xerox. It’s a good sharp price,” he might say when I answered the phone. No pleasant  42  or inquiry about my life, just financial instructions. This manner of his  43  me and we often quarreled. But one day, I thought about my father’s success in business and realized that his concern for my financial security lay behind his  44    morning calls. The next time he called and told me to buy a stock, I  45   him.
When my social style has conflicted with that of my friends, I’ve often felt   46  . For example, I always return phone calls  47   and regularly contact with my friends. I expect the same from them. I had one friend who rarely called, answering my messages with short e-mails. I rushed to the  48   : She wasn’t a good friend! My anger  49    as the holidays approached. But then she came to a gathering I  50  and handed me a beautiful dress I had fallen in love with when we did some window-shopping the previous month. I was  51    at her thoughtfulness, and regretful for how I’d considered her to be  52   . Clearly I needed to change my expectations of friends.
Far too often, I ignored their  53    expressions, eagerly expecting them to do things in my  54  . Over the years, however, I’ve learned to  55   other persons, love signs.
