II. 完形填空(共15题,每小题2分,共30分)
My best friend is Cocoa, and I live in a senior-citizen apartment. Cocoa is a ten-year-old dog and I am a sixty-nine-year-old lady, so you can see we both qualify as   11  citizens.
He is a   12  companion. He does many amusing things that make me  13  , and when that happens, he is so delighted  14  he just keeps it up.
But one afternoon, Cocoa started acting strangely. I was sitting on the floor playing with him,  15  he started pawing and smelling at the right side of my  16  . He had never done anything like this ever before, and I told him, “No.” To Cocoa, one “no” is usually  17 , but not that day. He stopped briefly, and then  18   ran toward me, throwing his entire weight at the right side of my chest. He crashed into me and I cried in   19  , falling down to the floor. Soon after this, I felt a lump (肿块). I went to my doctors, and after X-rays  20   and lab work were done, they told me I had cancer.
When cancer starts, a  21   of calcium (钙) builds. Then the lump or cancer attaches itself to this wall. When Cocoa jumped on me, the force of the impact broke the lump away from the wall. This made it possible for me to  22   the lump.
I had a complete mastectomy (乳房切除术) and the cancer has not   23  to any other part of my body. The doctors told me if the cancer had gone undetected even six more months, it would have been too  24  .
Was Cocoa  25   of just what he was doing? I’ll never really know. What I do know is that Cocoa not only shares his life with me, he has also made sure that I will be around to share my life with him!

I would like to suggest that for sixty to ninety minutes each evening all television broadcasting in the United States be forbidden by law.
Let us take a  36 , reasonable look at what the results might be if such a(an)  37  were accepted; families might use the time for a real family hour. Without the distraction of TV, they might   38  together after dinner and actually talk to one another. It is well known that many of our  39  —everything in fact, from the generation gap to the high divorce rate to some forms of  40  illness —are caused at least in part by  41  to communicate. By using the quiet family hour to  42  our problems, we might get to know each other better, and to like each other better.
On evenings when such talk is  43 , families could discover more active pastimes(消遣,娱乐. Freed from TV, forced to find their own activities, they might take a   44  together to watch the sunset  45  they might take a walk together.  46  free time and no TV, children and adults might discover reading. There is more entertainment in  47  than in a TV program.  48  report that the generation growing up with television can hardly write an English sentence,  49  at the college level.  50  is often learned from reading. A more literate new generation could be a product of the quiet hour.
A different  51  of reading might also be done as it was in the past: reading aloud. The quiet hour could become the story hour. When the  52  ends, the TV net works might be forced to  53  with better shows in order to get us back from our newly discovered activities.
At first glance, this idea seems radical(激进的. How will we spend the time then? The fact is: it has been only twenty-five years  54  television came to control American free time. Those of us thirty-five and older can  55  childhoods without television. It wasn’t that difficult.

I've always loved pigeons(鸽子). Some years ago I managed to persuade my wife to let me buy a few and start   16  them myself. You see, people are prepared to pay big prices if they get to know that your pigeons are 21  big prizes.
My wife had been changing her  22  to the pigeons over the last year or two anyway. She was quite   23  of all the prizes we’d won. Then there was the travelling, which she liked. You see some one has to take the pigeons a  24  way off and set them free. Some of the   25  were really nice. I never travelled. I used to like to wait at home and see them come in. They’ve got this wonderful sense of  26 , which can bring them back home so quickly. They’d flown hundreds of miles sometimes   27  storms or against strong winds. And there they’d come, tiny white birds against the great   28 . Then I'd watch them  29  round and come down onto the landing shelf. I'd look at my watch and think, “My goodness, that’s a good  30 . ”And I'd take off the little leg ring and push it through the machine to  31  what time he’d arrived. Then my wife would  32 up and say, “Has he arrived yet?” Then we would work out if we’d won   33 .
Then last year we had a   34 ! All of them got some sort of flu and  35  . It was terrible. I had to burn them all. We lost a fortune, of course.
