During my second year at the city college, I was told that the education department was offering a "free" course, called Thinking Chess, for three credits. I 4 1 the idea of taking the class because, after all, who doesn't want to 4 2 a few dollars? More than that, I'd always wanted to learn chess. And, even if I weren't 4 3 enough about free credits, news about our 4 4 was appealing enough to me. I managed to get an A in that 5 3 and learned life lessons that have served me well beyond the 5 4 .
Ten years after my chess class with Ashley, I'm still putting to use what he 5 5 me: "The absolute most important 5 6 that you learn when you play chess is how to make good 5 7 .On every single move you have to 5 8 a situation, process what your opponent(对手) is doing and 5 9 the best move from among all your options." These words still ring true today in my 6 0 as a journalist.

When I was a kid, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. And I remember one night when she had made dinner after a long, hard day at .
On that evening so long ago, my mom a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely burned toast in front of my dad. I remember to see if anyone noticed! all my dad did was reach for his toast, at my mom and ask me how my day was at school… I don’t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember him spread butter and jelly on that toast and eat every bite!
When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom to my dad for burning the toast. And I’II never what he said: “Honey, I love toast.”
Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really his toast burned. He me in his arms and said, “Your Momma put in a hard day at work today and she’s really . And besides, a burned toast never anyone!”
is full of imperfect things... and imperfect people. I’m not the best at anything, and I forget and anniversaries just like everyone else. But what I’ve over the years is that learning to accept each other’s – and to celebrate each other’s differences – is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and relationship where a burned toast isn’t a deal-breaker!

When 17﹣year﹣old Quattro Musser hangs out with friends, they don't drink beer or cruise around in cars with their dates.(1) , they stick to G﹣rated activities such as rock﹣climbing or talking about books.
They are in good company, according to a new study showing that teenagers are increasingly delaying activities that had long been seen as rites of passage into (2) . The study, published Tuesday in the journal Child Development, found that the percentage of adolescents in the U. S. who have a driver's license, who have tried alcohol, who date, and who work for pay has plummeted since 1976, with the most precipitous (急剧的)(3) in the past decade. The declines appeared across race, geographic, and socioeconomic lines, and in rural, urban, and suburban areas.
To be sure, more than half of teens still engage in these activities, but the (4) have slimmed considerably. Teens have also reported a steady decline in sexual activity in recent decades, as the portion of high school students who have had sex fell from 54 percent in 1991 to 41 percent in 2015, according to Centers for Disease Control statistics. "People say,'Oh, it's because teenagers are more responsible, or more lazy, or more boring,' but they're (5) the larger trend," said Jean Twenge, lead author of the study, which drew on seven large time﹣lag surveys of Americans. Rather, she said, kids may be less (6) in activities such as dating, driving or getting jobs because in today's society, they no longer need to.
According to an evolutionary psychology theory that a person's "life strategy" slows down or speeds up depending on his or her (7) , exposure to a "harsh and unpredictable" environment leads to faster development, while a more resource﹣rich and secure environment has the (8) effect, the study said. In the first (9) , "You'd have a lot of kids and be in survival mode, start having kids young, expect your kids will have kids young, and expect that there will be more (10) and fewer resources," said Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University who is the author of "iGen: Why Today's Super﹣Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy﹣and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood."
In that model a teenage boy might be thinking more (11) about marriage, and driving a car and working for pay would be important for "establishing mate value based on procurement of resources," the study said. But America is shifting more toward the (12) model, and the change is apparent across the socioeconomic spectrum, Twenge said. "Even in families whose parents didn't have a college education…families are smaller, and the idea that children need to be carefully (13) has really sunk in." The (14) of "adult activities" could not be attributed to more homework or extracurricular activities, the study said, noting that teens today spend fewer hours on homework and the same amount of time on extracurriculars as they did in the 1990s (with the exception of community service, which has risen slightly). Nor could the use of smart phones and the Internet be entirely the (15) , the report said, since the decline began before they were widely available. If the delay is to make room for creative exploration and forming better social and emotional connections, it is a good thing, he said.

The journey my daughter Cathy has had with her swimming is as long as it is beautiful.
Cathy suffered some terrible 16 in her early childhood. After years of regular treatment, she 17 became healthy.
Two years ago, while Cathy was watching the Olympics, a dream came into her sweet little head-to be a swimmer. Last summer, she wanted to 18 out local swim team. She practiced hard and finally 19it. The team practice, 20was a rough start. She coughed and choked and could hardly 21her first few weeks. Hearing her coughing bitterly one night, I decided to 22 her from it all. But Cathy woke me up early next morning, wearing her swimsuit 23to go! I told her she shouldn't swim after a whole night's coughing, but she refused to 24 and insisted she go .
From that day on, Cathy kept swimming and didn't 25 a single practice. She had a 26intention within herself to be the best she could be. My ten-year-old was growing and changing right before my eyes, into this 27 human being with a passion and a mission. There were moments of 28 of course: often she would be the last swimmer in the race. It was difficult for Cathy to accept that she wasn't a 29 ---ever. But that didn't stop her from trying.
Then came the final awards ceremony at the end of the year. Cathy didn't expect any award but was still there to 30 her friends and praise their accomplishments. As the ceremony was nearing the end, I suddenly heard the head coach 31 , "The highest honor goes to Cathy!" Looking around, he continued, "Cathy has inspired us with her 32 and enthusiasm. 33skills and talents bring great success, the most valuable asset(财富)one can hold is the heart."
It was the greatest 34 of my daughter's life. With all she had been 35 in her ten years, this was the hour of true triumph(成功).

Well,I had to give it in to her—she was.One day,I saw her sitting in the grass, head in her arms.I walked toward her and quietly asked what was “Oh,nothing,” came a soft reply.“I am just too short.” The coach told her that at her height she would probablyget to play for a top ranked team, offered a scholarship. So she stop dreaming about college.
