Have you ever counted the number of digits (数字)in your mobile phone number? Your number has 11 digits. You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. That's because China has the longest mobile phone numbers in the world. Why is that?

The 11 digits can be divided into three parts. Each part has a different meaning. The first three numbers tell you which mobile phone service provider(提供者) you are using. For example, 135 is for China Mobile Communications Corporation and 188 is for China Unicom. The fourth to the seventh digits tell you where the number is registered (注册). And the last four digits are random(随机的).

The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world. We once had 10numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits starting from 1999. Eleven digits can be used to make tens of billions of mobile phone numbers. That's enough for each person to have seven or eight phone numbers to use in China.

And mobile phone numbers can be recycled. Usually, the service provider will reuse a canceled number after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven't contacted (联系)for a long time, you may find that its owner has changed.

Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11﹣digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. So they cannot create as many numbers as we can. Countries like the United States, Australia and India use phone numbers with 10digits. Canada's mobile phone numbers are perhaps the shortest in the world: they use seven digits.

(1)Is China the only country that uses 11﹣digit mobile phone numbers in the world?

(2)What can we know from the fourth to the seventh digits of a mobile phone number in China?

(3)Why does China use 1l digits for mobile phone numbers?

(4)When can a mobile phone number be recycled in China?

(5)Which country perhaps has the shortest mobile phone numbers in the world?

This 12﹣year﹣old Girl Built a Robot to Find Plastics in the Ocean

Anna Du was walking along the beach when she noticed plastics there. She reached down to pick them up, and quickly realized there were many more tiny pieces than she could deal with. It seemed impossible to clean them all up.

Du, 12 years old at the time, tried to solve the problem like any good scientist﹣first. by doing a little research. That's how she learned that 8 million tons of plastics end up in the oceans every year.

Then she got to work building something that could help solve the problem;a remote﹣operated vehicle(遥控潜水器), or ROV. Her ROV can move through water and find plastics on the ocean floor.

The actually cool part of Du's ROV is the detection(探测) system. She uses a camera along with three different kinds of light to find the plastics. She also uses visible(可见的) light to find unnatural colors that might make the plastics stand out.

"She has a very good engineering sense to break down a problem like this and then go after it," says engineer Casey Machado. "It sounds simple, but it's a level of thinking that's really amazing."

Du started attending public events and workshops at a university when she was five years old, and so she picked up the engineering skills necessary to build her ROV. She says actually getting her ROV to move through water well was not easy. She failed many times, but she never gave up trying and testing.

When asked about future plans, she mentions wanting to address the effects of climate(气候)change."I think there are a lot of problems that could be solved with new inventions," says Du.

Du thanks her parents, who for years have taken her to student outreach activities, for supporting her interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). She says she has been able to meet students and scientists there.

"I know I want to be an engineer because I like building things to help solve world problems," says Du."But I'm not sure what kind of engineer I want to be yet."

(1)What did Anna Du notice while walking along the beach?

(2)How old was Du when she did a little research to solve the problem?

(3)What can Du's ROV do?

(4)Why does Du want to be an engineer in the future?

To the Editor,

I am writing as a member of One﹣on﹣One,the sixth﹣grade mentoring (指导) group. Our group is two years old and made up of 14 students. Our task is to help students reach their goals through mentoring. We hope the readers of this school newspaper will join our group. This is my first year as a mentor, but I have already learned that everyone taking part in mentoring gets something out of it.

I was assigned (分配) to a mentor last year. Mentoring was one of the best things that happened to me. I was able to turn the corner at an important point in my studies, going from nearly failing math to passing it. It still amazes me that I completely changed from almost hating math to loving it! Would you believe I'm even thinking of studying math in college? Even if I don't, I have skills that I will use for the rest of my life. My own experience made me feel certain of becoming a mentor this year and helping other students like myself. Now that I am a mentor, I realize what a good feeling you get from helping someone else and knowing that you' re making a difference in his or her life.In many situations, lasting friendships are made as well. My mentor and I hit it off right away. And we're still good friends today.

Becoming a mentor is a serious commitment(承诺).Mentors spend one hour every week with the student they are mentoring.Considering your responsibilities,it may be difficult to add another commitment to your schedule. But I hope you will at least consider the possibility.

Thank you for considering our invitation. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Mark Lopez
