Huge Waves Destroying Arctic Ice Faster than Expected

Ice covers much of the Arctic Ocean. Some pieces of ice are huge, like moving islands. As temperatures have increased ,however, some of the ice has begun to disappear.Scientists have discovered huge waves in the arctic waters.

The waves were discovered by accident in May,2010.Scientist Aleksey Marchenko and his students set out on a trip. They wanted to study the icy waters.

The ship travelled east and stopped next to a large block of ice around 50 miles from the small island of Hopen.Marchenko prepared to lead his students out onto the ice.

"We were ready to go but when I went out,I discovered many cracks around," he remembers.

He decided to move the ship deeper into the ice to keep safe. The farther in they went,he thought, the harder the ice would become. As they pushed forward, however, the ship experienced small waves, and then bigger ones.Soon, the waves broke up the ice around the ship into thousands of smaller pieces.

Within an hour,Marchenko and his team saw a wave that was about 13 feet high. The ship's navigation system finally recorded the largest waves. They were more than 20 feet in height. The waves were so strong that they forced huge pieces of ice to jump up and down, breaking the ice into smaller pieces within just one hour.Scientists had never imagined that the process could happen so fast. The waves in these areas used to be small.

The speed and force of the huge waves there makes it impossible to know in advance when they are coming. That could be dangerous for navigators and local communities who are unprepared for huge waved or depend on sea ice to protect them.Wildlife like polar bears that depend on sea ice to live is also in danger.

Some scientists think people will soon see even bigger waves in icy waters. As waves break up ice ,seas will be more open, waves will be stronger. There are stormy times ahead.

A 10-year-old boy decided to learn judo though he had lost his left arm in a car accident. The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.
“Master,” the boy finally asked, “shouldn’t I be learning more moves?” “ This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the teacher answered.
Several months later, the teacher took the boy to his first competition. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent (对手) became impatient and charged; the boy skillfully used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the final.
This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. Soon after the match started, the boy seemed to lose. Thinking that the boy might get hurt, the judge called a time-out. He was going to stop the match when the teacher appeared. “ No,” the teacher said, “Let him continue.” A short time after the match carried on, his opponent made a careless mistake. At once, the boy used his move to pin (压住) him. The boy won the match and the competition.
On the way home, the boy asked the teacher what was really in his mind. “Why could I win the competition with only one move?” The teacher answered. “First, you’ve mastered one of the most difficult throws in judo. Second, your opponent can only attack your left arm to win you.”

We all dream about things that we would like to do we hope to achieve in the future. But are everybody’s dreams the same? Here are some of the findings of a survey about hopes and dreams, in which thousands of students across China took part in it.
What are the hopes of teenagers? We received several different answers to the question: what would you like to do after finishing your education? It seems some students would like to start work as soon as they can, so that they can help offer better lives to their parents. Other students hope to continue studying after they finish school and to go to university. Although money is important, many teenagers said they want to do jobs they enjoy. According to the survey, the most popular choice of job is computer programming.
What are the dreams of teenagers? Teenagers have all kinds of dreams. Some are more realistic than others. For example, many students said they would like to be volunteers if Beijing could hold the World Cup, maybe working as translators or tour guides. And quite a few said they dream of going to the moon one day.
According to the survey, less realistic dreams are also common, but many students reported that they were willing to work hard to achieve their dreams. Quite a few dream of becoming famous, perhaps famous sports people or singers. Some said they’d like to have exciting trips; one student said she’d love to sail across the Pacific Ocean. And then there are dreams that are impossible; three students said they’d like to be able to fly!
Conclusion It was clear from the survey that teenagers have similar hopes. It seems that most students hope to have a good education and find a good job. On the other hand, students dream of very different things: good things, and even crazy things. It is very important to dream, so hold on your dreams; one day they may just come true.

I have lived in France for nine years. but I cannot walk down the street without being recognized(认出) as an Englishman from 50 metres away, before I open my mouth. Why?
In France, the quickest way to recognize an Englishman is that he'll be the one with the belly(肚子) and the shirt hanging out. Englishmen often wear shapeless black T-shirts, either too big or too small. However. Frenchmen are more formal(正式的)in dressing. Their T-shirts have collars(领子). Shorts have buttons and zips rather than drawstrings(拉绳). Shoes look expensive.
Englishmen think of lunchtime as I pm. but for Frenchmen it is 12 o'clock, one hour earlier. This may explain the sad looks if an Englishman arrives at a local restaurant at 1:30 pm. At that time most restaurants don't have waiters. All the cooking and serving may be done by the boss and his wife. When you arc shown to your table, just sit there and wait. Don't wave your hands to the waiters. Englishmen think guests should do something to make the waiters pay attention to them. But in France some bread and water will come first, then the waiters will take your order according to the rhythm(节奏) of the restaurant. Have enough patience(耐心)!

Every place offers the possible dangers for getting hurt, even staying at work. We may face dangers like walking into desks or chairs, receiving unexpected cuts from a paper knife and so on. Industrial jobs have similar and more dangers like getting body parts hurt by machines or falling from a height.
No one wants to get hurt. Some accidents are avoidable(可避免的). Most accidents happen because of common things seen every day—an open desk drawer, a chair pulled out too far, water on the floor and so on. We slowly get used to these things we see every day and never think about what they could possibly become in the future.
Think about the following to prevent dangers to yourself and others:
1. If there is something you see and know may become a danger for yourself or others, do      something about it. Close a desk drawer, clean up or put a sign over the water, turn off the power before leaving, and so on.
2. Get extra persons’ help and support on a task that is too hard for a single person.
3. Study the situation and think what could possibly happen and change if necessary. Do it before something happens and you won’t have to say some day, “ I should have… How sorry I feel…”
To use an old phrase ‘Safety is everyone’s duty.’ Looking down on it could lead to being hurt. Keep the rule in mind every day “ Everyone wants to go home in the same condition they came to work in -– or better.”

Shadow puppetry (皮影戏)started during the Western Han Dynasty and it has a long history of more than 2,000 years. It used to be popular in the countryside because it was simple and cheap.

The puppets are usually made from leather (皮革)or paper. It is hard to make them. The puppet﹣makers have to take 24 steps, which include washing the leather, carving (雕刻) and painting,to make a puppet.

Just like many things that are in danger, traditional arts also face the risk of disappearing. "Many young people still think that shadow puppetry is an old﹣fashioned folk art, " said Liu Chaokan, the sixth﹣generation inheritor (继承人)of shadow puppetry in Yunnan province.

"Since they couldn't understand those old stories, why don't we show them the cartoon characters they love in shadow puppetry shows?" said Liu.

Kyra Komac, 28 years old, now has 25 furniture(家具) stores all over the country. The new store, in London’s Camden High Street, takes her back to where it all started. She tells us about how the business began.
When I was little, my mother began selling flowers in Camden Market. She couldn’t leave me at home on my own, so I had to go to the market with her.
To begin with, I didn’t have to do anything. I just sat there, and my mum told me jokes and stories so I didn’t get bored. When I got older, I gave my mum a hand and I really enjoyed it.
Then, one year, my grandma gave me a book for Christmas. It was all about making candles and I loved it. I was 14, and I didn’t have to go to the market any more because mum could leave me at home on my own. I made candles of all shapes and sizes in my free time. I made hundreds of them.
One day, my mother was ill so I had to go to the market on my own. I decided to take some candles with me and see if I could sell them. They were sold out in twenty minutes! The next week, my mum gave me some money to buy some wax(蜡) to make more candles. They sold out really quickly, too.
Nine months later, we decided to stop selling flowers. My mum and I couldn’t make enough candles during the week, so some of my school friends started to give us a hand. I paid them £1 for every candle, and we used to sell them for three or four times that. It was fun and my friends worked with me in the market.
At the age of 22, my uncle helped me to open my first shop in Portobello Road by lending me some money. Since then, I’venever looked back, even in difficulties. In the first store, we only sold candles, but now we sell everything from furniture to paintings. Oh, and candles, of course.
How many furniture stores does Kyra Komac have now?

What did Kyra do in her free time when she was fourteen?

Who helped when Kyra and her mum couldn’t make enough candles?(no more than 5 words)
