Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in common.People hardly ever keep them! There are good reasons for this.Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult to keep.Sometimes people just forget about them. For this reason, some people say the best resolution is to have no resolutions! How about you﹣will you make any next year?

Poverty (贫困)is a big problem around the world. But China has done a good job of dealing with it and it has found its own way to fight poverty.Instead of just giving money to poor people,it has tried to educate people and give them the tools they need to lift themselves out of poverty.Ordinary (平凡的)people play a big role in the fight. Here are two of them.

After graduating from Beijing Normal University in 2016,Huang Wenxiu gave up the chances to work in big cities and returned to her hometown of Baise in Guangxi and served as the village's Party chief.A total of 418 villagers were lifted out of poverty thanks to her efforts.Unluckily, she died in a flash flood at the age of 30 while driving back to her village in Baise. She was given the title "role model of the times" by the central government.

When Mao Xianglin started to work as the Party secretary of his village, there was only one pathway out of the village for many years. He led more than 100 villagers to build a road with their hands. It took them seven years to build an eight kilometer road. Mao then encouraged the villagers to grow oranges.Last year, their orange yield (产量)was nearly 40 tons.Young people have returned to the village to sell oranges online.By the end of 2019,269 villagers had been lifted out of poverty. The per capita income (人均收入)reached 12,670 yuan,40 times more than in the 1990s.

(1)How does China help poor people to fight poverty?

(2)What prize was given to Huang Wenxiu?

(3)How do young people sell oranges in Mao Xianglin s village?

These days,Chinese children are sometimes busier on weekends than weekdays because they have to take so many after﹣school classes. Many of them are learning exam skills so that they can get into a good high school and later a good university.Others are practicing sports so that they can compete and win. However, this doesn't only happen in China.

The Taylors are a typical American family.Life for Cathy Taylor's three children is very busy. "On most days after school," Cathy says, "I take one of my two boys to basketball practice and my daughter to football training. Then I have to take my other son to piano lessons.Maybe I could cut out a few of their activities, but I believe these activities are important for my children's future.I really want them to be successful. However, the tired children don't get home until after 7:00 p.m.They have a quick dinner, and then it's time for homework.

Linda Miller,a mother of three, knows all about such stress. "In some families, competition starts very young and continues until the kids get older," she says. "Mothers send their small kids to all kinds of classes. And they are always comparing them with other children. It's crazy.I don't think that's fair. Why don't they just let their kids be kids?People shouldn't push their kids so hard."

Doctors say too much pressure is not good for a child's development.Dr.Alice Green says all these activities can cause a lot of stress for children. "Kids should have time to relax and think for themselves, too.Although it's normal to want successful children,it's even more important to have happy children."

(1)What's the common problem for Chinese and American families?

(2)What's Cathy Taylor's idea about so many after﹣school activities?

(3)What does Linda Miller think about after﹣school activities?

(4)What's Dr.Alice Green's opinion about afterschool activities?

Self﹣love is the most important if you want to find out your full potentials(潜质)on earth.Accepting who you are makes you feel that you are good enough.

Huge Waves Destroying Arctic Ice Faster than Expected

Ice covers much of the Arctic Ocean. Some pieces of ice are huge, like moving islands. As temperatures have increased ,however, some of the ice has begun to disappear.Scientists have discovered huge waves in the arctic waters.

The waves were discovered by accident in May,2010.Scientist Aleksey Marchenko and his students set out on a trip. They wanted to study the icy waters.

The ship travelled east and stopped next to a large block of ice around 50 miles from the small island of Hopen.Marchenko prepared to lead his students out onto the ice.

"We were ready to go but when I went out,I discovered many cracks around," he remembers.

He decided to move the ship deeper into the ice to keep safe. The farther in they went,he thought, the harder the ice would become. As they pushed forward, however, the ship experienced small waves, and then bigger ones.Soon, the waves broke up the ice around the ship into thousands of smaller pieces.

Within an hour,Marchenko and his team saw a wave that was about 13 feet high. The ship's navigation system finally recorded the largest waves. They were more than 20 feet in height. The waves were so strong that they forced huge pieces of ice to jump up and down, breaking the ice into smaller pieces within just one hour.Scientists had never imagined that the process could happen so fast. The waves in these areas used to be small.

The speed and force of the huge waves there makes it impossible to know in advance when they are coming. That could be dangerous for navigators and local communities who are unprepared for huge waved or depend on sea ice to protect them.Wildlife like polar bears that depend on sea ice to live is also in danger.

Some scientists think people will soon see even bigger waves in icy waters. As waves break up ice ,seas will be more open, waves will be stronger. There are stormy times ahead.

根据短文内容,请用完整句子回答下列问题。

(1)When did Marchenko and his students discover huge waves in the arctic waters?

(2)What happened to the ice around the ship when the ship moved into the ice?

Shadow puppetry (皮影戏)started during the Western Han Dynasty and it has a long history of more than 2,000 years. It used to be popular in the countryside because it was simple and cheap.

The puppets are usually made from leather (皮革)or paper. It is hard to make them. The puppet﹣makers have to take 24 steps, which include washing the leather, carving (雕刻) and painting,to make a puppet.

Just like many things that are in danger, traditional arts also face the risk of disappearing. "Many young people still think that shadow puppetry is an old﹣fashioned folk art, " said Liu Chaokan, the sixth﹣generation inheritor (继承人)of shadow puppetry in Yunnan province.

Liu understands why old art forms couldn't interest young people,so he connects new stories with the traditional form of storytelling. In a recent show based on the ancient Chinese novel Journey to the West,Baigujing dances to a Korean pop song.Popular Chinese cartoon characters, together with the modern factors (元素),are Liu's secret in getting the attention of children. "Since they couldn't understand those old stories, why don't we show them the cartoon characters they love in shadow puppetry shows?" said Liu.

To keep the old art forever young,Liu thinks they should respect (尊重)its traditions and protect the basic of the art.
