Zebras have their own bug repellent(驱虫剂)?
Eww bugs! They are so annoying! We humans are lucky that we can apply repellents to avoid nasty bites. But what’s an animal to do? They have no choice but to spend their days shooing them off with their tails, unless, of course, they are zebras, who apparently have their own automatic repellent--- their striped skin!
Scientists had originally thought that the reason why the animal had developed the black and white lines was to help protect itself from predators (食肉动物)in the African savannah(大草原), because the stripes make it difficult to single out one zebra that is traveling with a herd. While that may be true, the theory has never been tested or proven. Now the experts have another---that the stripes have evolved to repel the annoying horse flies that not only feed off their blood, but also, transmit dangerous germs into the bodies of these innocent animals.
The study was performed by a team of Swedish scientists. One of the clues that got them thinking along these lines was the fact that darker horses got bitten more often than light-colored or white ones.
The fact that zebras are born black and only develop stripes as they grow older made the scientists theorize that the stripes may be something the animals have developed to make themselves less attractive to flies.
To test if this may be the case, they painted some boards at a horse-infested(寄生的) horse farm in Budapest with patterns of black and white stripes of varying widths and applied a layer of glue on them. What they noticed was that the places where the black and white stripes were at their narrowest (similar to what zebras have) attracted the fewest flies. They achieved similar results when they painted horses with black and white zebra-like stripes.
While the research are not sure why this may be the case, they believe it may be something to do with the way insects operate---horseflies are attracted to horizontally polarized light(偏振光); since white does not reflect it, white horses are luckier than black ones. But zebras seem to be the luckiest of all. When the researchers measured the polarized light reflected from real zebra skins, they found that it matched light patterns that were the least attractive to horseflies.
While this theory does make logical sense, nobody is 100 percent sure that it is really true, given that it has never been tested on a real zebra. If it is true, it does raise the question of why a horse, a close relative of the zebra has failed to develop stripes. The researchers believe that this could be because there are more horseflies in Africa, where zebras reside, then anywhere else in the world.

Title
Zebras have their own bug repellent?
Reasons why zebras develop their strips
Original belief
With the black and white lines, one zebra is difficult to single out while traveling with a herd, thus _____ it from its enemies.
New theory
Zebras, residing in Africa where there are most horseflies in the world have developed strips to ______ being attacked.

A study
Researchers
A team of scientists from ______

____
To test if strips are developed to make zebras less attractive to flies.

Clues
*White or light-colored horses are less ___ to get bitten than dark ones.
*Zebras develop strips as they grow older though born black.

Method
*Some boards at a horse farm are painted with patterns of black and white stripes variously _____ , a layer of glue applied on them.
*Measured the polarized light reflected from real zebra skins.

____
*The places where the black and white stripes at the narrowest were similar to the ____zebras have attracted the fewest flies.

Woodkopf is a crazy new sport invented in the Czech Republic(捷克共和国) and it has been gaining quite a lot of national media attention. This popular sport involves a pair of opponents wearing two-meter wooden boards on their heads and trying to knock the other’s board down without dropping their own. Strange as it sounds, a rousing match of Woodkopf can be quite exciting to watch.
This crazy sport can be traced back to July, 1992, when it was practiced during a cultural festival of art school graduates in Prague. Woodkopf, which literally translates as “wooden head”, is popular partly due to the fact that the game is simple, inexpensive and requires no complex equipment, but also because it never fails to supply a good dose of humor.
It is played by both men or women of all ages, and the rules are pretty simple. Both opponents must wear long and thin wooden boards of 200×16×2cm, weighing between 3 and 4kg. Once the boards are in position, the opponents try to knock each other’s boards off, using only plank-to-plank(木板) touches. No body-to-body or plank-to-body touches are allowed. The player who manages to knock down the opponent’s board twice in a row is declared the winner.
According to members of the Woodkopf Union, the best players are generally the taller ones. A bald head is also of great advantage, as pointed out by union chief Ivan Rezac.
Veteran Woodkopf players are now struggling for the sport to be included in the Olympic Games. They strongly believe that it has a great future. Vladimir Cech, who has been playing for the past seven years, said,“We want it to become our national sport, and a part of Czech culture along with beer, pork, dumplings and cabbage.”.

(Reuters) - The search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 is likely to drag on for years, a senior U.S. defense  official told Reuters on Friday, as an underwater search for any trace of the plane off west Australia appeared to have failed.
The official, speaking under condition of anonymity(匿名)because he was not authorized to comment on the search effort, said two weeks of searching the Indian Ocean floor with a U.S. Navy had turned up no wreckage(残骸).
He said the search for the plane, which disappeared on March 8 with 239 people on board, would now enter a much harder phase of searching broader areas of the ocean near where the plane is believed to have crashed.
”We went all-in on this small area and didn't find anything.  Now you’re got to go back to the big area," the official said.  "And now you're talking years.”
On Friday, the undersea drone. Bluefin-21 is expected to finish what may be the last of its 16-hour trips to depths of  more than 4.5 km (2. 8 miles) searching a 10 square km (6.2 square mile) area of the seabed about 2,000 miles northwest of Perth.
Authorities had identified the area as their strongest lead in determining the plane's final resting place after detecting what they suspected was a signal from the plane's black box recorder on April 4.
But the U. S.  official said Malaysia would have to decide how to continue the search, including whether to bring in more underwater drones,  even with the understanding that the search could continue for years without a refined (精确的) search area.

There is no such thing as a hard rule when it comes to leadership. There are generally accepted principles that, when studied and applied, are believed to be helpful in improving one’s leadership skills.
People become more willing to work if they feel important. Effective leaders help their organization’s members develop their self-esteem. You can do this by paying more attention to them and expressing your interest in their opinions every time you converse. The key here is being sincere and expressing your appreciation through the smallest gestures.
Members of an organization are more able to adapt to changes if there is a specific plan of action laid out. Planning is crucial in effective leadership because it provides the organization with a concrete direction and identifiable (可识别的) means to achieve its goals. As a leader, you should initiate (开始) planning and make an effort in communicate those plans as clearly as possible to your members. This will strengthen your members’ decision-making skills and allow for effective delegation.
A highly motivating work environment is undoubtedly a productive one. The organization benefits the most when its members are continuously motivated to work for and with it. You can provide deserving members with public recognition even through a simple mention of their names and accomplishments. Offering challenges that allow your members to grow is a brilliant way to motivate them to be more competitive. You can hand out incentives such as bonuses or promotions to high-performing members so that your members will have something to look forward to in exchange for job well done.
These three principles are all important in improving your leadership skills. But they are not enough. The success of your leadership will ultimately depend on the way you recognize your organization’s needs and how you can adapt your leadership style to those needs.
Only you can tell what “good” leadership is for your organization. Likewise, it’s only you who can determine how you can become a “good” leader.
What is the main idea of the passage? ( no more than 8 words)
According to Paragraph 2, how can leaders develop employee’s self- esteem? ( no more than 13 words)
Why is planning so important in leadership? ( no more than 13 words)
List three methods to motivate employees as a leader. ( no more than 10 words)
What is the key to success in leadership? ( no more than 13 words)

My young cousin Jim seems to have endless question to ask every day. One day, he asked me what life on earth began after watching a film. To be honest, the question remains a puzzle to me. Besides, in order not to let him down, I found the answer in a book, said, “Long ago the earth was a cloud dust. The dust settled into a solid globe before billions of years. The earth became so violently that it was not clear that the shape would last or not. It exploded loudly with fire and rock. Then water began to appear. As the time went on, different life forms began.”

The expression, “everybody’s doing it,” is very much at the center of the concept of peer pressure. It is a strong influence of a group, especially of children, on members of that group to behave as everybody else does. It can be positive or negative. Most people experience it in some way during their lives.
People are social creatures by nature, and so it is hardly surprising that part of their self-respect comes from the approval of others. This instinct (天性) is why the approval of peers, or the fear of disapproval, is such a powerful force in many people’s lives. It is the same instinct that drives people to dress one way at home and another way at work, or to answer “fine” when a stranger asks “how are you?” even if it is not necessarily true. There is a practical aspect to this: it helps society to function efficiently, and encourages a general level of self-discipline that simplifies day-to-day interaction.
For certain individuals, seeking social acceptance is so important that it becomes like an addiction; in order to satisfy the desire, they may go so far as to abandon their sense of right and wrong. Teens and young adults may feel forced to use drugs, or join gangs that encourage criminal behavior. Mature adults may sometimes feel pressured to cover up illegal activity at the company where they work, or end up in debt because they are unable to hold back the desire to buy a house or car that they can’t afford in an effort to “keep up with the Joneses.”
However, peer pressure is not always negative. A student whose friends are good at academics may be urged to study harder and get good grades. Players on a sports team may feel driven to play harder in order to help the team win. This type of influence can also get a friend off drugs, or to help an adult take up a good habit or drop a bad one. Study groups and class projects are examples of positive peer groups that encourage people to better themselves.
Schools try to teach kids about the dangers of negative peer pressure. They teach kids to stand up and be themselves, and encourage them to politely decline to do things that they believe are wrong. Similarly, it can be helpful to encourage children to greet the beneficial influence of positive peer groups.

Young children learn by imagining and doing. Have you ever watched a child pick up a stone and pretend it is a racing car? He is using an object to represent something else. But this pretend(假想的)play is not as simple as it may seem. The process of pretending builds skills in many areas.
As children play pretend games, they explore relationships between people and learn more about how people communicate. Playing doctor, they imagine how physicians care for their patients. Playing house, they learn more about how parents feel about their children. If children can imagine how it feels to be left out of a game or to lose a pet, they are better able to help those in need. They become more willing to play fair and share.
Listen in as children play with toys or friends and you will probably hear some words and phrases you never thought they knew! In fact, we often hear our words reflected in the play of children. Pretend play helps children understand the power of language. In addition, playing pretend games with others helps children to make the connection between spoken and written language---a skill that will later help them to read.
Pretend play provides children with a variety of problems to handle. Whether it’s two children waiting to play the same role or searching for the just right material to make a roof for the playhouse, they call upon thinking skills that will be used in every aspect of their life, now and forever.
Encourage your children to use their imagination---it’s not just fun, but builds skills too.!

Earth Hour is a global WWF ( formerly known as World Wildlife Fund ) climate change initiative(倡议). This event calls for everyone to stand up and take responsibility towards a sustainable future. Earth Hour is not to be confused with Earth Day.
Millions of people turned off their lights for Earth Hour at 8:30 pm (20: 30) in their local times on the last Saturday of March. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Europe to Asia to the Americas have stood in darkness during previous Earth Hours. Some people enjoy Earth Hour with a candle-lit dinner or a candle-lit bath, while others host large events or parties, either in darkness or with candles, to celebrate Earth Hour. Businesses and government organizations, as well as community and political leaders also take part in Earth Hour. It’s about giving people a voice on the planet’s future and working together to create a sustainable low carbon future for planet earth.
Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. This event saw 2.2 million homes and businesses turn their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change that year. Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating in 2008. Global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the CN Tower in Toronto, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, all stood in darkness for Earth Hour. In March 2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour.
WWF, which organizes the annual Earth Hour event, aims to stop the damage of the earth’s natural environment. It also focuses on building a future where people live in harmony with nature. The organization functions through a network of more than 90 offices in more than 40 countries worldwide. Its first office was found in Morges, Switzerland, on September 11, 1961.

Of the hundreds of self-change techniques that have been suggested over the centuries, perhaps only a dozen are totally different. Researchers have tried to see which ones work best.
Three techniques deserve special mention: they’re powerful, simple and easy to learn. what’s more, individuals who have made successful changes in their lives—changes in eating habits, career paths, coping strategies, and so on—often rely on one or more of the three techniques.
To get yourself started in a new direction, try the Three M’s:
Modify(改变)your environment
The power of modifying one’s space has been well displayed in studies since it was reported in the 1960s for the first time. Psychologist Richard Stuart showed in the 1960s that overweight women could lose pounds by modifying both their eating behavior and “stimulus environment” — for example, eating from smaller plates and confining all food to the kitchen.
People who have never tried this are astonished by the enormous effect it often has. I’ve known several people who have overcome nail-biting simply by buying 50 nail files and distributing them everywhere: in their pockets, their desks and their bedrooms. With a nail file always within reach, they tended to groom rather than bite. To change yourself, change your world.
Monitor your behavior
I’ve been reading research studies on self-monitoring for 20 years, and I’ve conducted some myself. The fact is, if you monitor what you do, you’ll probably do better.
Weigh yourself regularly and you may well start to lose weight. Keep a record of what you eat and you’ll probably start eating more wisely.
A study by Canadian researchers showed that teenagers arrived more promptly at a swim practice when they were given an attendance sheet to record their arrival times. Sonya Carr and Rebecca Punzo reported that self-monitoring improves academic performance of emotionally disturbed children in reading, mathematics and spelling. Dozens of studies have similar results, all inspired by heightening our awareness of our behavior.
Make commitments
When you commit yourself to another person, you establish a possibility of reinforcement
(后效强化);you’ve automatically arranged for a reward if you stick to it and a punishment if you don’t. It puts some pressure on you, and that’s often just what you need.
For instance, if you want to exercise more, arrange to do it with a friend. If you don’t show up, your friend will get angry, and that may be just the ticket to keeping you punctual
(准时的). In 1994 Dana Putnam and other researchers showed that patients who made written commitments were far more likely to take prescribed medicine than patients who hadn’t
There’s good news here for all of us. We can meet many of the demands and overcome many of the challenges of life with simple skills that anyone can master and that don’t require willpower-in other words, with skill, not will.
Change your bad habits to good

Introduction to anger
Anger is a natural reaction which comes out when we feel that we have not been given a fair treatment. The positive side of this negative emotion is that it has helped us to evolve(发展) as humans and cope in a better manner with our surroundings. However, it tends to become a problem when we fail to control it. Many a time it happens that your anger has hurt others or has spoiled one of your relationships for which you regret later. It has some bad effects on the health, too.
We should control anger so that it does not cause harm to us or to those around us whom we love. One of the best ways to control anger is to get help from others. If you feel that you are unable to manage your anger, it can make you more upset. So tell someone that is close to you, a friend or a family member, about your problem. When you discuss a matter with others, there is a better chance of finding a solution to your problem. Besides, there are no better stress relievers than humor. When you feel that it is because of stress that your anger is becoming unmanageable, you can use humor. It can help you look at difficult things in a lighter way and you will feel better about the things around you.
Anger tends to make us have a lot of negative thoughts. Therefore, we have to change the negative thoughts into positive ones. For this you have to first refuse all the negative thoughts that are in your mind one by one. This can be done with a lot of practice. Once you are successful in that, you have to maintain your focus only on the positive things of life.
Meditation (冥想) is an excellent anger management technique. In addition, what we do is disconnect ourselves from the outer world and focus all our attention into the inner world. This helps us develop a sense of controlling our thoughts that tend to cause anger.

“HEARTLESS”— a word you wouldn’t want to use to describe a person. But having his heart removed was what saved Craig Lewis’ life—and what made him the first living “heartless” man.
The 55-year-old,dying of heart disease, was told he only had 12 hours to live, when Billy Cohn and Bud Frazier, doctors from the Texas Heart Institute, decided to try something new. They removed Lewis heart and replaced it with an artificial (人造的) one. Less than a week after the operation, Lewis was able to sit and speak.
Lewis kept on living like a normal person, with only one difference—he didn’t have a heartbeat. The human heart usually pumps blood through our bodies by beating regularly. By contrast, this artificial heart pushes the blood forward with two moving blades(桨叶). If you were to touch Lewis or listen to his chest, you would not feel a heartbeat. If you hooked him up to an EKG(心电图) machine, the line would be flat.
Scientists have been trying to create a working artificial heart for years. Until now, all artificial hearts either broke down or caused blocks and infections.
But after five years of hard work, Dr Cohn and Dr Frazier developed this artificial heart. It is smaller and quieter than other artificial hearts and can last much longer. They tested it on 38 calves (牛犊) and all of them turned out energetic and healthy. Lewis is the first human proof that the machine is a success.
The doctors will have to work more on the device and decide on a final design before it can be widely used. The US Food and Drug Administration will also need to say that the machine is safe. But this artificial heart looks likely to bring a ray of hope to thousands of patients.

Chang'e 3 is a lunar(月球的) exploration mission operated by the China National Space Administration (CNSA), incorporating a robotic lander and China's first lunar rover.
The spacecraft was named after Chang'e, the goddess of the Moon, and is a follow-up to the Chang'e 1 and Chang'e 2 lunar orbiters. The rover was named Yutu following an online poll, after the mythological rabbit that lives on the Moon as a pet of the Moon goddess.
Chang'e 3 achieved lunar orbit on 6 December 2013 and landed on 14 December 2013, becoming the first probe to soft-land on the Moon since Luna 24 in 1976.
In January 2004, the People's Republic of China's lunar orbiter project was formally established. The first Chinese lunar orbiter, Chang'e 1, was launched from Xichang Satellite Launch Center on 24 October 2007 and entered lunar orbit on 5 November. The spacecraft operated until 1 March 2009, when it was intentionally impacted into the surface of the Moon. Data gathered by Chang'e 1 were used to create an accurate 3-D map of the entire lunar surface, assisting site selection for the Chang'e 3 lander.
Chang'e 1's successor, Chang'e 2, was approved on October 2008 and was launched on 1 October 2010 to conduct research from a 100-km-high lunar orbit, in preparation for Chang'e 3's 2013 soft landing. Chang'e 2, though similar in design to Chang'e 1, was equipped with improved instruments and provided higher-resolution imagery of the lunar surface to assist in the planning of the Chang'e 3 mission.
In March 2012, China began manufacturing the body and payload of the Chang'e 3 lander, which will attempt to perform lunar surface and space studies independently of the mission's mobile rover.
Like its orbiting predecessors, the Chang'e 3 mission is planned as a precursor(先驱)to further robotic lunar exploration missions, including Chang'e 5, a sample return mission planned for 2017. Following these automated missions, a manned landing may be conducted around 2025.
Chang'e 3 will attempt to perform the first direct measurement of the structure and depth of the lunar soil down to a depth of 30 m (98 ft), and investigate the lunar crust(壳) structure down to several hundred meters deep.
The development of the six-wheeled rover began in 2002 and was completed in May 2010. It has a total mass of approximately 120 kg, with a payload capacity of approximately 20 kg. It can perform simple analysis of soil samples and may transmit video in real time. It can navigate inclines(斜坡) and has automatic sensors to prevent it from colliding(碰撞) with other objects.
The rover was successfully deployed from the lander, and it made contact with the lunar surface on 14 December. After taking pictures of each other the lander and rover will start their respective science missions. The rover is designed to explore an area of 3 square kilometres during its 3-month mission, with a maximum travelling distance of 10 km.

[1] Have you ever had the wish to live another 100 years or more? Experts say that scientific advances will some day enable us to live tens of years longer than what is now seen as the natural limit of the human life span.
[2] “I guess we are knocking at the door of living longer,” said Michael Zey, a Montclair State University business professor and author of two books on the future. "I think by 2075 we will            _________________ and that’s a conservative estimate (保守的估计)."
[3]At the conference in San Francisco, Donald Louris, a professor at New Jersey Medical School in Newark said advances in using genes as well as nanotechnology (纳米技术) make it likely that humans will live in the future beyond what has been possible in the past. "There is a great push so that people can live from 120 to 180 years," he said.
[4]However, many scientists who specialize in ageing are doubtful about it and say the human body is just not designed to live past about 120 years. Even with healthier lifestyles and less disease, they say failure of the brain and organs will finally lead all humans to death.
[5]Scientists also differ on what kind of life the super aged might live. "It remains to be seen if you pass 120, you know; could you be healthy enough to have a good quality of life?" said Leonard Poon, director of the University of Georgia Gerontology Centre. "At present people who could get to that point are not in good health at all."

It’s often said that high self-confidence is key to success. In fact, low self-confidence is more likely to make you successful. Sure, extremely low confidence is not helpful, but just-low-enough confidence can help you readjust your goals so they are more realistic and attainable and have a better chance of succeeding. There are three main reasons for this:
★Lower self-confidence makes you pay attention to negative feedback and be self-critical: Most people get trapped in their optimistic biases, so they tend to ignore negative feedback. Although this may give them confidence, achievement is 10% performance and 90% preparation. Thus, the more aware you are of your soft spots, the better prepared you will be.
★Lower self-confidence can motivate you to work harder and prepare more: In fact, low confidence is only negative when you are not serious about your goals. If you really want what you say you want, your low confidence will only make you work harder to achieve it — because it will indicate a gap between your desired goal and your current state.
★Lower self-confidence reduces the chances of looking arrogant(自大的): Indeed, people with low self-confidence are more likely to admit their mistakes - instead of blaming others. This is the most important benefit of low self-confidence because it points to the fact that low self-confidence can bring success, not just to individuals but also to organizations and society.
In brief, if you are serious about your goals, low self-confidence can be your biggest help to accomplish them.
