Just recently I had been wondering if there was much point in doing little acts of kindness. So often they get 36 , and occasionally they come back to bite you!
Then, just last week, after a long travel, I found myself 37 at a bus station. The bus was four hours late! So, I guess I wasn’t in a good 38 .
That’s when a woman asked me if I had any spare 39 to help her get a bus ticket.
“Oh, sure,” I said sarcastically (挖苦地). “How much would you like?”
As I spoke, I mentally kicked myself for my 40 and reached into my bag for some money. As I handed her five dollars, I heard low sounds from her stomach because of real 41 .
I reached back into my bag and brought out a 42 I had bought earlier. I handed it to her with a(n) 43 that I hoped would make up for my earlier tone of voice. Getting a 44 look at her now, I realized she was extremely tired, like she had had several months of 45 days!
As she took the food, a look of 46 washed over her. In return, she tried to give me a Milwaukee bus ticket! I don’t live in Milwaukee and the ticket will probably 47 be used, but I took it.
A few minutes later she came back over, apologized, and told me she was still 48 of five dollars. I took some singles out of my bag and slipped a twenty in there as well. 49 , the voice in my head told me I was being a fool.
Five minutes later she came back again and tried to 50 my twenty. When I said it was for her so she could get something else to 51 , and that I was completely serious and I wasn’t taking it 52 , she started crying and hugged me.
From now on, when I wonder if it is 53 trying to help someone, I will remember that woman. Maybe I am really making a 54 for someone. So, sure, sometimes my efforts might not be noticed, and sometimes they might come back to bite me, but they might actually 55 another human being!

Jobs and work do much more than most of us realize to provide happiness and contentment. We're all used to thinking that work provides the material things of life—the goods and services that make our modern civilization possible. But we are much less conscious of the degree to which work provides the more important psychological wellbeing that can make the difference between a full and an empty life.
Historically, work has been associated with slavery and sin (罪恶)and punishment. And in our own day we are used to bearing traditional complaints.Against this background,it may well come as a surprise to learn that not only psychologists but other behavioral scientists have come to accept the positive contribution of work to the individual's happiness and sense of personal achievement.Work is more than a necessity for most human beings;it is the focus of their lives, the source of their identity and creativity.
Rather than a punishment of a burden, work is the opportunity to realize one's potential. And the opposite is true, too. For large numbers of people, the absence of work is harmful to their health.Retirement often brings many problems surrounding the “What do I do with myself?”question, even though there may be no financial cares.Large numbers of people regularly get headaches and other illnesses on weekends when they don't have their jobs to go to,and must take care of themselves. It has been observed that unemployment, quite apart from financial pressures, brings enormous psychological troubles and that many individuals'conditions become worse rapidly when jobless.
But why?Why should work be such a significant source of human satisfaction?A good share of the answer rests in the kind of pride that is stimulated by the job,by the activity of accomplishing.
Which of the following statements can NOT be learned from the passage?
A.People feel happier and more content than they realize when working. B.Work is likely to provide you with the chance of achieving your potential. C.Happiness can only be gained through working. D.A lot of people will suffer physically and psychologically without work.
A.work is related to negative aspects B.happiness has nothing to do with work C.identity and creativity depend on work D.work is not only a necessity for humans but the focus of their lives
A.What the proper way to balance work and life is. B.How work brings people pride in accomplishment. C.Which is more important:the material things of life or psychological wellbeing. D.How people overcome the problems arising from retirement.
A.Doubtful. B.Concerned. C.Approving. D.Neutral.
Are you a man or a mouse? When people ask this question they want to know whether you think you are a 36 person or a coward (懦夫). But you will never really know the answer to this question 37 you are tested in real life. Some people 38 they are brave but when they come face to face with real 39 , they act like cowards. Others think of themselves as cowards, but when they meet danger, they act like 40 .
Lenny had always thought of himself as a 41 person. He got worried before examinations. He worried about his job and health. All he wanted in life was to be safe and healthy. 42 , on January 15th, 2002, a plane crashed into the Potomac River in Washington. Lenny went to the river to see what was happening. He saw a woman in the 43 water. Lenny did not feel afraid. He kept very 44 and did a very dangerous thing. He jumped into the Potomac, 45 to the woman, and kept her head 46 the water. Seventy-eight people died that day. Thanks to Lenny, it was not 47 .
When you are in a very dangerous situation and feel afraid, the body automatically produces a chemical in the blood. The chemical is called adrenalin. With adrenalin in the blood system, you actually feel stronger and stronger and are 48 to fight or run away. However, when you are absolutely terrified, the body can produce too much adrenalin. When this happens , the muscles become very hard and you find you can’t at all. You are then paralyzed (使无能为力) with fear. This is 49 when we are very frightened, we sometimes say we’re “petrified”. This word comes from the Greek word “petros”, which means “stone”. We are 50 frightened that we become stonelike.
