Before going outside in the morning, many of us check a window thermometer(温度计)for the temperature. This helps us decide what to wear.        We want our food to be a certain coldness in the refrigerator. We want it a certain hotness in the oven. If we don’t feel well, we use a thermometer to see if we have a fever. We keep our rooms a certain warmth in the winter and a certain coolness in the summer.
Not all the thermometers use the same system to measure temperature. We use a system called the Fahrenheit scale. But most other countries use the Centigrade scale.
Both systems use the freezing and boiling points of water as their guide.
The most common kind of thermometer is made with mercury(水银)inside a clear glass tube. As mercury (or any other liquid) becomes hot, it expands. As it gets colder, it contracts. That is why on hot days the mercury line is high in the glass tube.
First. Take a clear glass juice bottle that has a cap; fill the bottle with coloured water. Tap a hole in the center of the cap using a hammer and thick nail. Put the cap on the jar. Then stick a plastic straw(吸管) through the nail hole.

Finally. Place a white card on the outside of the bottle and behind the straw. Now you can see the water level easily.

As the temperature goes down, the water will contract, and the level in the straw will come down. Perhaps you will want to keep a record of the water level in the straw each morning for a week.

A.Thermometers measure temperature, by using materials that change in the same way when they are heated or cooled.
B.We use and depend on thermometers to measure the temperature of many other things in our daily lives.
C.Take wax (you may use an old candle if you have one) and melt some of it right where the straw is struck into the cap to seal (把……粘住) them together.
D.The water will rise in the straw. As the temperature of the air goes up, the water will expand and rise even higher.

E.They label these in different ways. On the Fahrenheit scale water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. On the Celsius scale water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees.
F.Now that you know this rule you can make a thermometer of your own that will work.
G.People use thermometers which are made by themselves when travelling around the world.

The next long vacation might be still months away, but it’s never too early to tailor a good travel plan.
Planning ahead with discount air tickets and hotel booking sites may bring you the prize of an overseas adventure. Here, 21st Century offers some tips on how to plan a cheap, creative travel route.
Book a budget flight
Discount airlines tend to increase their fare as the plane fills up and early reservations are usually rewarded with the lowest fares.
Most major domestic airlines offer discount tickets for off-peak travel. China Southern Airlines now provides favorable group purchase ticket deals to attract tourists to cities like Hong Kong and Guilin.
Another way is to search for a cheap ticket on the websites of low-cost airlines, which offer you very low fares though less comfort.
The budget airline has a long history in the West. It’s also called a no-frills carrier(经济型航班)for doing away with traditional free services, such as food and drinks. They charge you extra for catering on board, or securing a seat.
Popular airline routes
Air Asia: The Malaysian-based airline flies form seven cities in China including Tianjin, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Guilin and Shenzhen in the Chinese mainland, and provides trips to cities such as Paris and London.     Many tickets are priced under 1500 yuan.
Southwest Airlines: If you go traveling in the US you can take this low-cost airline based in Texas.
Find a cheap 5-star service hotel
It’s a great idea to look for YHA(Youth Hostels Associa-tion)backpackers, or Bed & Breakfast deals online.

A.It can transfer you to most South East Asian countries.
B.So you have to read more discount information before boarding.
C.The key to getting any good-priced plane ticket is to reserve the flight early.
D.So it’s wiser to take hand luggage because many budget airlines put a fee on checked in luggage.

E. Air China and Beijing Capital Airlines offer tickets with as much as 75 to 80 percent discounts.
F. Like airline tickets, the price for a budget hotel depends on when you book it: the earlier, the cheaper.
G. Get your holiday off to a flying start by booking a cheap flight to hundreds of destinations ebookers offers.

How Can I Fight Laziness?
Lazy people will never gain anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.
Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.
Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more positive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone.
Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(诱惑) that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness.      Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.
Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately.  Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people.
Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.

A.To fight family laziness, set an example.
B.Knowing how to fight laziness is important.
C.One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.
D.Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness.

E. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal.
F. Laziness appears when you no longer feel in charge of your own mind.
G. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child.

Home is a place where one feels safe and secure but unfortunately, it is also a place where you may have serious accidents. The biggest single cause of accidents is human error! So you must take care of yourself!
Causes of home accidents.
Balconies, fireplaces, staircases, ponds, glass doors or kitchens can all increase the risk of accidents. Hot water, household chemicals, fireplaces, matches, alcohol and sharp objects are also potential dangers. Loosing balance, clumsiness and being tired or careless can be the reasons for these accidents. What’s more, if you are under stress or when a routine is changed, you may also be under the risk of home accidents.
Most common types of accidents.
You can see many dangerous home accidents happening around you. The most common ones are slips, falls and collisions. They are not fatal but often result in broken bones. The second most common types of accidents are burns, swallowed objects or breathed in chemicals.
Some other possible dangers at home are poisioning, choking, drowning, electric shocks, and animal bites. Some of these accidents may even result in death.
The importance of education.
Sometimes the simplest precaution protects you from the greatest harm.       The Ministry of Health can train professionals to educate nursing staff, ordinary people, voluntary workers, teachers, nursery staff and parents in home accident prevention and control. When people know first aid, they can reduce the risk of serious injuries.

You must take measures to make your home a safer place. For instance, keep knives and other sharp objects in a safe drawer. Wipe up any liquids on the floor immediately in order not to slip or fall. Keep hot objects away from the reach of children. You also mustn’t leave children unattended near a bath that has water in it. If you keep furniture away from windows, you may prevent possible harm. Store all medicines, household chemicals, and so on, preferably in a locked box and do not forget to keep all dangerous substances in their orginal containers. In brief, if you want to protect yourself, be careful not to be sorry!

A.Is home really safe?
B.Nursing home injuries.
C.Ways of preventing accidents.
D.The design of houses can cause accidents.

The Invisible Door
If you’re still not getting hired, you might be running into an invisible (无形的) door. Invisible doors are things companies want from new employees but don’t list as job requirements. Many companies have special company cultures. Others are looking for people with very specific skills.

Tiffany, a 16-year-old girl, was very shy. Last September, her best friend, Sophie, moved abroad with her family because she had to continue her studies in America. She even said she would not come back for at least a few years.     “I was really sad the moment I heard the bad news and I didn’t know what to do”, Tiffany recalled (回忆). “I shut myself in my room for a whole week. It was then that my aunt took me to a sports club one Saturday and I saw so many young people playing various sports there. I signed up for a beginner’s course in volleyball and since then I have been playing this sport. Now I practice twice a week there. Now Tiffany is quite popular with her friends and she has also gained more confidence.
The mind needs exercise as well as the body.

A Carefully edit it
B. Keep thank-you letters short
C. Just do it ------ and do it quickly
D. Be genuine in your appreciation
E. Stress some of your key selling points
F. Add points not addressed in interviews

Tips for writing a job-search interview
thank-you letter
_________________
You should try to send out your thank-you letters within 24 hours of your interview---- no longer than about two or three days afterward. If you have a hard time writing letters and don't want to write any, fight that urge and force yourself to write something. Studies continue to show that the vast majority of job-seekers do not send thank-you letters. As a result, by doing so, you will stand out from other applicants. The speed is of great importance, so you can either email your thank-you letters or drop them off the next day.
________________
Write your thank-you note from the heart. Everyone values authentic communications, so rather than using a boring thank-you letter from the Internet, use your own words and feelings to write your letter. Find a way to express your genuine feelings of appreciation and connection with the interviewer. One word of caution: Don’t give fake praise and appreciation; keep it honest and simple.
________________
One of the main goals of an employment interview is to determine if there is a good fit between the interviewee (you, the job-seeker) and the employer. Thus, one of your key goals in your thank-you letter should be to clearly express your strong fit with the organization. At the same time, it’s also good to mention a few of your key selling points ------ points that exactly match the requirements of the position you are seeking. Even a thank-you letter is a chance to market yourself.
_________________
Job interviews are stressful situations and even with excellent preparation, we can sometimes forget to mention something that may be a key selling point. If that happened to you, no worries as you can add the point in your thank-you letter. As you are summarizing your fit with the position and employer, you simply add the additional point you forgot to make in the interview.
__________________
One of the worst things you can do is to write an amazing thank-you letter, but realize after you sent it that it had a misspelling, or poor construction. Especially check and double-check the spelling of the name of the employer. Write a draft of your letter and come back to it later to edit it. Read it aloud to check how it flows. Have someone else read it for errors. Review your final version carefully before sending it.

下面文章中有4处, 需要添加小标题。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E)中选出符合各段意思的小标题。
A. Exercise
B. Early to Bed, Early to Rise
C. Read Challenging Books
D. Take Time to Think Deeply
E. Reducing Television Watching
Your brain needs exercise just like a muscle. If you use it often and in the right ways, you will become a more skilled thinker and increase your ability to focus. Here are 5 simple ways anyone can have a try.
__________—— This is a hard sell(强迫推销). People love vegetating(="doing" nothing like plants) in front of the television, myself included more often than I’d like. The problem is watching television doesn’t use your mental capacity or allow it to recharge. It’s like having the energy taken out of a muscle without the health benefits of exercise. When you feel like relaxing, try reading a book instead. If you’re too tired, listen to some music. When you’re with your friends or family, leave the tube off and have some communication. All of these things use your mind more than television and allow you to relax.
__________—— Many people like to read popular suspense fiction, but generally these books aren't mentally beneficial. If you want to improve your thinking and writing ability you should read books that make you focus. Reading a classic novel can change your view of the world and will make you think in more precise, elegant English. Don’t be afraid to look up a word if you don’t know it, and don’t be afraid of dense passages. Take your time, re-read when necessary and you’ll soon grow used to the author’s style.
__________—— Nothing makes it harder to concentrate than the lack of sleep. You'll be most energetic if you go to bed early and don’t sleep more than 8 hours. If you stay up late, you’ll wake up tiredly and have trouble focusing. In my experience the early morning hours are the most productive. Waking up early gives you more productive hours and maximizes your mental acuity(敏锐)all day.
__________—— Often our lives get so busy that we become defeated without even realizing it. It becomes difficult to concentrate because disturbing thoughts keep interrupting. Spending some time alone having second thoughts gives you a chance to organize your thoughts and have a better understanding of what's important and what isn’t. The unimportant stuff won’t bother you anymore and your mind will feel less tired.

Kids' health: Four steps for fighting stress
Everybody gets stressed time to time. Some ways of dealing with stress---like screaming or hitting someone---don't solve much. But other ways, like talking to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.
Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:
(1) Get support. When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk to trusted adult, such as “parent or other relatives.”     . They might have had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.
(2) Don't take it out on yourself. Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they take it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that's not a good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. Don't take it out on yourself.      .
(3) Try to solve the problem. After you're calm and you have support from adults and friends, it's time to get down to business.   .  Even if you can't solve it all, you can solve a piece of it.
(4) Be positive. Most stress is temporary. Remember stress does go away, especially when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it. These steps aren't magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make your way through a tough time, you'll help yourself feel better even faster.      .

A.Notice your friends' feelings and find a way to help them.
B.Different people feel stress in different ways
C.You need to figure out what the problem is.
D.Then, find a way to calm down.

E. Ask for a helping hand to get you through the tough situation.
F. Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.
G. And don't forget about your friends.
