3D printing technology may not be a new thing in some foreign countries. But in May this year, at Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center. Many visitors were attracted by a 3D printer.
The machine looks similar to an ordinary printer and can print a “statue” in about 90 minutes after scanning anything, including a person.
The printer prints layer by layer. For example, if we want to print a 30-cm-tall statue, the computer will calculate* the layers and print 460 layers in total*. It can also print people and clothes. You can stand for scanning for just about three minutes, and a statue will be finished about two hours. The cost for a statue of a man is about 1000yuan. The printer, which costs about 500,000yuan, is from the USA.
“We want to introduce this technology to people, and find more chances here.” said an engineer, “There is a company in USA that offers 3D printing services to people. Height is just one of the thousands of features that your genes (基因) decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then maybe you will be tall, too, but if you have questions about how tall you’re going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.
But genes don’t decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential (潜力). Getting enough sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the right height.
Maybe you’re wondering how fast you should grow. There’s no right answer. Kids grow about 2 inches (5 centimeters) a year between age 3 and the time they start puberty(青春期) .
Your doctor will know how your growth (生长) has been going over the years. Two centimeters here and 2 inches there are not nearly as important as the height you’re at now, how you’ve been growing up to this point, and what other changes your body may be going through.
Don’t be worried if you have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a very quick growth during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later —between 7 and 13 for girls, 9 and 15 for boys.
You’ll usually begin to find that you’re growing faster about a year after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty.
If you want to know how fast and how tall you should grow, _______.

A.you should have enough exercise
B.you can ask doctors for help
C.you should protect the environment
D.you can record your growth during puberty

This passage is mainly about _______.

A.how the genes work in your body
B.when the time you grow fast is
C.why you look like your parents
D.how you grow to a certain (某一) height

After reading this passage, we can explain (解释) _______.

A.how good it is to be a doctor
B.how much sleep we need
C.why genes can’t decide everything
D.what an unhealthy diet is

Cormorant fishing(鸬鹚捕鱼) is a traditional Chinese skill, probably more than a thousand years old. Cormorants are large, black birds, which are good at catching fish. They can dive down 25 meters, and stay under water for up to two minutes.
A fisherman usually goes on a fishing trip on a bamboo boat with his birds. When he reaches the right place, he stops. A piece of grass is tied around the neck of each bird, so that the fish won’t go down into its stomach. He pushes the birds into the water, and then bangs the water heavily with his bamboo pole(竹竿). The fish are frightened by this. The cormorants swim very quickly to catch the fish. Finally, the birds come up one after another to the fisherman. The fisherman takes the fish out of the birds’ mouths and then throws them into a big basket. Later some of the fish are sold, and the rest are divided between his family and the cormorants. If you are one of those who want to know how to increase your vocabulary, there are some ways you may find useful. In fact, it is not that difficult to learn new words, but to remember them for a lifetime seems not to be so easy.
To make it easier, you can try word associations(联想). Try to find a connection between a new word and things or people you know. For example, if your neighbour is an unselfish person who cares about the needs of other people, think about this person every time you see the word, and very soon you'll start actively using it.
Try to use the words you learn as often as possible. Perhaps you are not sure which situations they should be used in, or whether you pronounce(发音) them correctly, but practice is the best way to understand that. It is not enough to find out the meaning of a word. You should hammer (敲打) it into your mind by using it in actual conversations in everyday life.
Also, it may be helpful to know the meaning of the word roots, prefixes (前缀) and suffixes (后缀), especially if they have a Greek or Latin origin(起源). Even if you meet a long unfamiliar word, it will be easy to know its meaning if you know the general meaning of its parts.  For example, if you see the word "philanthropy", it won't be difficult to surmise what it means if you know that "anthropo" means "human" and "philo" means "loving". Not only can ancient Greek and Latin be helpful, but a number of modern languages as well. So, if you speak French,  Italian, Spanish or Portuguese, guess the meaning of an unfamiliar English word if it sounds like  a word from another language you know.
Which of the following old sayings can show the main idea of Paragraph 3?

A.Every dog has his day.
B.Practice makes perfect.
C.Every coin has two sides.
D.Where there is a will there is a way.

According to the last paragraph, what does the writer think is important?

A.Learning to use several different modern languages.
B.Learning some very difficult words in the English language.
C.Knowing the meaning of the word roots, prefixes and suffixes.
D.paying more attention to words that have a Greek or Latin origin.

The underlined word "surmise" in the last paragraph means_______.

A.guess B.suggest
C.prove D.remember

what's the writer's purpose in writing the passage?

A.To tell us how he or she learnt English well.
B.To explain why it is not hard to learn new words.
C.To prove that learning new words can be really fun.
D.To tell us some good ways of remembering new words.
