Depending on yourself

Growing up is not always easy. When we face difficulties, a spirit of depending on yourself is more useful than crying for help. That's what Hong Zhanhui's story of growing from boy to man with family hardship tells us.

Hong was born in 1982in a poor family in Xihua County (县), Henan Province. When he was only 11, his father became badly ill and one day he came back with an unwanted baby girl. A year later, Hong's mother left home. She no longer wanted to live such a poor life and face her sick husband. So everything hard fell onto the young boy's shoulders: to take care of his father and the sister Chenchen, and to go on to study.

Although his life was hard, Hong didn't go away from his father and sister. He worked in part﹣time jobs to feed his family. He climbed tall trees to get birds' eggs for his sister. He walked two hours at weekends to the market to buy different things to sell around his school. A few years later, he studied at a college. To take care of Chenchen, he worked hard to rent (租) a room near his college for her, and sent her to school.

After Hong's story went public, he became a hero in people's eyes. But Hong refused offers from others. He said he felt encouraged by kind offers, but he could depend on his own work.

Through his hard life, he has grown up from boy to man.

Sometimes it may seem that what you are learning at school will be of no use in the future. It may seem that you're wasting your life away. But you will be surprised to find how much of what you learnt at school is helpful to you one day. Three people were asked what they found useful at school, and their thoughts are shared below.

When I used to ask my teacher how to spell something, she often said, I don't know. Then she would take out the dictionary and look it up. She was not ashamed to say that she didn't know the answer. I learnt two things. You don't have to know _______; and if you don't know how to spell something, just get the dictionary out. Both are very useful lessons!

                                                                                                                      John Ring

                                                                                                          Bicester, United Kingdom

In school, you also learn to deal with life in general. Little mistakes can seem to be very serious. Wear the wrong clothes and it seems that everyone is laughing at you. Get too close to a boy too fast and everyone talks about you. You want to go into a hole and die! But the truth is that life goes on. You might feel that what you did "wrong" will never ever be forgotten. However, if you can be brave and keep on, you will find that whatever happened will pass and you will start to enjoy life again.

                                                                                                                         Lindsey Smith

                                                                                                                    Boston, United states

We had a class called Guidance and in it we learnt about making good decisions in life. I found it pretty boring and didn't pay much attention. One day the teacher made us guess which appliance(家电)

we should buy first once we had our own homes. The answer was a fridge. I learnt that it was true once I had my own place. The first day I bought some chicken meat. By dinner time it smelled and I couldn't

even eat it! My housemate and I started saving to buy a fridge right away.

                                                                                                                    Robert Knight

                                                                                                            Cape Town, South Africa

(1)Please translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.(请将文中划线句子翻译成汉语)

(2)Fill in the blank with one proper word to complete the sentence in John's thought. (请在John

的文段空白处填入一个恰当的词,使句意完整)

(3)Find out the two little "serious" mistakes mentioned by Lindsey.(no more than 15 words)(请找出 Lindsey提到的两个"严重"的小错误,15词以内)

(4)Why is a fridge considered the first choice of appliance by Robert and his teacher?(请根据短文内容回答问题)

Getting English Language Learners to Put Down the Books and Have Some Fun

Even if there's so much about English that can be learned from a book or even in a traditional classroom setting,a lot of the language can still be learned best in more relaxing situations where students are having fun. Here are some suggestions.

★Communicate with strangers. If you live in an area filled with English speakers, get students out of the classroom.(1) .Students may not speak to strangers, but they'll hear conversations taking place and may begin to understand how the words learnt in the classroom are actually used in everyday speech.

★(4) .Casual (随意的)conversations give learners the chance to hear or use English in situations. They can talk all they want about expressions to use while dining out or informal words to use with friends, but it takes a trip to McDonald's or a picnic in the park for many of those expressions to truly set in.

A.

You can let students go to a movie in English.

B.

Put them among other English speakers.

C.

They may hate to speak English.

D.

Hear or use English in situations.

E.

They will speak more freely.

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don't give friendship back. That is why some friendships don't last very long.(1) You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous(慷慨的); be understanding.

Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don't tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven't been honest, you may lose your friend's trust.(2)

By sharing them you help your friend know you better.

Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve.(4) So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend's place so you can understand the problem better.

(5) But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.

A. To have a friend, you must learn to be one.
