A lot of people play sports, but very few people become sports professionals(专业人员). If sports aren't going to be your future, then why should you play them? Why should you train every day? Why should you work hard and feel sore(酸痛) the next day? Wouldn't it be better to forget sports and only pay attention to your lessons?
There are actually a lot of good reasons to play sports. First of all, sports are a great way to exercise. Exercising keeps you healthy and strong. It also helps you stay in a good state. When you exercise, your body produces endorphins(内啡肽). Endorphins give you more energy and make you feel happier.
Sports are important for everyone, but they are especially important for young people. They teach young people about winning and losing. Also, they teach young people how to communicate and work as a team. For example, when you play football, you must learn how to communicate with your teammates and work together. Sports teach young people to respect their coaches, teammates, and people they fight against as well.
Many reports say that sports help young people stay out of trouble. If a young person plays sports, he or she is less likely to have problems. This is because sports teach people about rules. They also teach people that if they work hard, they might succeed.
Another good way of sports is that they make people leave their houses. These days, a lot of people spend too much time watching television and playing video games. When you play sports, you go outside and exercise in the sun. You take in fresh air. All of these things are important.
You're probably not going to become a sports professional, but that doesn't matter. Sports will help you become a better and happier person. Sports will help you make friends and stay healthy. Here is another good reason to play sports: Sports are fun.

Air pollution is a big problem for cities in most countries. Many people are dying from it. But how can we tell the air quality is good or bad?
On a tree next to a river in Amsterdam, a tiny birdhouse glows (发光) bright green when the air is clean. If you're standing nearby, the birdhouse will also give you a free Wi﹣Fi connection﹣but only if pollution level is low enough. The designer is Joris Lam. His birdhouse tells you about the air quality.
Joris' birdhouse is called TreeWifi. It can be put on a tree around your house to test the air quality. People can see a screen with information about the local air quality and how to improve it. TreeWifi is a simple way for people to know about the air pollution around them. If the birdhouse does not glow, people should care more about the environment. It reminds them to change their lifestyles. For example, to protect the air, they can ride bikes or just walk instead of driving cars.
"Imagine if trees gave free Wi﹣Fi, people would plant more trees like crazy. It's a pity that they only give us the oxygen(氧气) we breathe," Joris said.
The birdhouse doesn't work as a home for birds now. Joris and his team are trying to make some changes to it. In the future, they hope birds will live in the birdhouse and the heat of its green light will be used to keep birds warm in winter.

Eight years ago, 1﹣week﹣old Diandian was left behind. When people found her in the reeds (芦苇) of a lake, she looked too weak to survive. Now she is the mother of three milu, thanks to the workers' attention and care at the East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve.
Li is the president of a milu conservation association in Yueyang and head of a local milu and bird rescue center, where 11 deer, including Diandian, have their families. Li and his workmates need to work extra hours to take care of the animals from March until mid﹣May. He remembers March 18 this year. He fed Diandian some fresh shoots and leaves for breakfast as usual, and moments later when he returned,a newborn milu was right beside her. Since it is her third baby and born in the third month of the year, people named it Sansan, referring to "three﹣three". Li has developed a deep affection for milu and made up his mind to protect them. "As our country is paying more attention to environmental and wildlife protection, people are increasingly aware that milu are state﹣protected animalsm," Li said.
Milu habitats (栖息地) are usually centered around water, and fishing equipment that used to be a threat to the animals is no longer seen in nature reserves. On May 27, a team of experts went to watch milu near Dongting Lake. It takes time and luck to meet one and count them especially when they live in the thick reeds that are 4 to 5 meters tall. The team leader Song, saw a milu for the first time when he was studying for his doctorate in zoology early in 2009. Since then, he has helped protect the habitats at Dongting Lake. As the flood season is coming, Song and his workmates will go around the lake area day and night to save deer in trouble, and provide feed for the animals when needed.
As the environment improves in and around Dongting Lake, China's second﹣largest freshwater lake, the wetland has become cover once again for wildlife. "We will continue to protect these rare animals and their living environment," Song said.

What do you do with your rubbish?Throw it out?You don't know what you're missing!Look closely at the two figures on your left. They were made from things most people throw away. The figures were made from used bottle caps. Those two bottle﹣cap figures were exhibited (展示) in a museum.
Folk art is art made by common people who have not been trained as artists.Their work is often based on traditions in their culture.Fine art,on the other hand,is usually made by people who have had training in art.Works of fine art are valued for their artistic beauty. They are supposed to be looked at but not used.Works of folk art, however, are often made for everyday use.
There were more than 800 pieces of folk art from nearly 50 countries in the exhibition. All of the pieces were made from used metal, wood, cloth, and plastic. The artists come from many different cultures.Still, they all share one thing. They take objects that are normally thrown away and change them into objects that are beautiful, useful, and fun.The artists may not think of what they do as recycling, but that's exactly what it is.Fine artists might work with expensive materials. They might use expensive tools to shape these materials into works of art.On the other hand,in poor countries rubbish might be the only material folk artists and toy makers can afford. The exhibition shows that a rich imagination is very important when there are only poor materials.Recycled art began long before people began to think about recycling. Some of the objects in the exhibition date from the 1930s.
Even if you don't create art out of rubbish,it's good to save our natural resources.Remember the three rules:reduce, reuse, recycle. If you reduce waste, true things instead of throwing them out,and recycle materials such as paper, plastic, and glass, you will protect the environment.

Every day there is less and less space on Earth for rubbish. Yet every day we make more and more rubbish. What can we do? We can recycle some of our rubbish. Recycling means that the rubbish will be made into something that can be used again.
Recycling helps Earth. And it saves space in rubbish dumps. Half of everything that we put into landfills could be recycled instead. In fact, most things made of paper, metal, glass and plastic can be recycled.
Paper can be broken into small pieces and made into new paper. Steel and aluminum cans(金属雄)can be melted down(熔化)and made into new cans. The same is true of glass bottles. This can be done aver and over again. Recycling doesn't take as much energy as making these things the first time. So we can use less of Earth's fuel resources.
Plastic can be melted down, too. Then it can be formed into park benches, playgrounds and so on. Some people call plastic the "wood" of the future. Things made of plastic will last about 400 years﹣even if they stay outside in the weather. No wood can do that!

The Garbage (垃圾) Project started at the University of Arizona in 1973. Since then, the students and teachers in it have studied the modern garbage in different cities.
To study the garbage, the students had to travel to landfills (填埋场) , the places where cities bury (填埋) their garbage. While the students were studying the garbage they wore special clothes. Students were very careful when they opened bags of garbage.
One important thing the students have learned from studying the garbage is that the garbage in landfills disappears very slowly. That was surprising to both the students and many scientists who had thought that about 70% of the garbage in landfills would disappear quickly. Even in cities where it rains a lot, the students found newspapers from 1948, 40﹣year﹣old hot dogs, and vegetables from 1970. And the students also found many more empty bottles of cola than they expected.
How to dispose of our garbage well depends on what kind of garbage it is: regular(普通的) garbage, dangerous materials, or recyclable materials, such as newspapers and glass bottles. Regular garbage goes to regular landfills. Dangerous materials are harmful to people's health and the environment. They shouldn't go into regular landfills.
Homes are full of dangerous waste. One kind of the dangerous waste in homes is batteries. When batteries are buried directly(直接地)in a landfill, they often break open. The poison inside them moves through rain water to the bottom of the landfill. Then it can pollute the natural water in the ground.
Another dangerous waste from homes is motor oil. When people pour old motor oil on the ground or throw it in the garbage, it pollutes the environment.
Our garbage problem is not new, but as the world's population continues to grow, it will become a bigger and bigger problem.
